once a leaf is damaged.. secondary things can develop ...

water PROPERLY [ask if you dont know] ... full fall clean up.. and see if it happens next year ...

Good call on watering properly. It seems that 'watering properly' is highly dependent on the type of tree. Hopefully someone can help me identify what kind of tree I'm working with so I can figure something out.

Try changing the subject line by a word or two if you post twice in a row. Sometimes it won't even let you post two posts in a row, let alone accepting a picture.

not really.. a good DEEP watering.. and a good mulch.. and near drying in between is requisite for all trees and shrubs .. especially prior to becoming fully established .. [dig hole sand find out if there is any moisture a few inches down ]

and i adrian MI.. its been one horribly hot and drought stricken year ...

superficially spraying the leaves and the surface.. is problematic ...

since you are shooting down into the plant.. i am thinking it is a shrub ... so we all look forward to further pix.. for a full ID ... and while you are at it.. explain how you apply water ...

The picture I took is too dark..probably won't help much. I will take another one later today and post it.

The 'tree' is actually about 8 feet. I took a picture 'down' at it because I wanted to snap a picture of an affected area which would show the spots well.

Good point checking on the moisture. I will do that.

I apply water with a hose. It has a "shower" setting which sprays water but it's not forceful... I'd say it mimics a watering can, basically.

I will make sure to take a picture of the bottom of the tree. It has mulch, but maybe it needs more?

Amelanchier is my guess, showing heat related stress. A pic showing overall habit, decent leaf detail, and buds woul be nice. Any thing intetesting on bark or is it rather smooth and grayish (anticipated, anything else would be of intetest)

Bottom line, Yo...'something' has done this to the leaves. By this time of summer, especially a summer like this, some degree of insect feeding damage, fungal blight, or environmentally-caused damage is exceedingly common. It's cool that you care enough and are observant enough to report this, but the overall appearance of the tree is good, maybe even excellent. I'd not worry.

Tree might be planted a little deep. That's got nothing to do with the leaves looking like that but may be a long-term problem. Can you tap away some mulch at the base and expose the root flare?
