Anyone growing La Belle Sultane

The photos of this one look lovely and I would like to hear from someone who has this. I'm searching for a good Gallica and a plus would be a smaller bush.

I just got some suckers of this rose...I'm excited. I've seen it, and it gets rather large.

Which gallicas do you already have? I've got about 35 different varieties so far. Maybe I can root you some?

len511: it would be great just to get both, but space is very limited. :-( Olga: i've never seen these roses in person only in pics. Never a bush shot just the bloom. I did notice the spots on Alain and too my eye la belle seems to be a velvety purple very interesting . Both seem more of a single rather than a semi double. To be honest i was hoping you would set me straight on the matter. :-). All your comments on my considered choices over the last few years have saved me much time and money. Thnx so much for all your kindness........mark Here's the pic i was talking about. Does yours look similar?

Lynn, Our bush had a lot of basal canes and wanted to be quite wide before its "haircut" but it also was throwing some snakey canes that could be tied to a framework like a climber. Since we took a lot of canes away it is not nearly so wide and I think you could train it to be a bush or a climber. It is thorny but not the worst by a long shot. The laterals have smaller prickles but the basals have quite a few large attractive bronze thorns. Still nothing so bad as say a Joseph's Coat. Crepuscule was totally smooth with attractive foliage and did well for us in an all day sun spot but ultimately succumbed to sunburned canes after about five years. It is apricot though and we never saw many blooms beyond a great spring flush but that may have been due to its exposed position. Also I could never detect much by way of fragrance and Belle absolutely wafts. I don't know how either rose would do up against a wall in a southwest position. I know here on the east side I would never try it but I think you are in a cooler part of LV so maybe it would work if you didn't have much reflected heat off your house. Of course Lady banks would be fine there and thornless if you didn't mind a big two week show and then green the rest of the year:( We got both belle and crepuscule from roses unlimited so they may be a little different than what vintage has. Complicata - anyone growing this rose?

'Complicata' is mounding for me in our warm, dry summer climate where it doesn't get extra water during drought. Possible adversity helps contain it. Be aware that, as others have said, the pink with white eye is quite bright and striking, and clashes with other vivid roses. I have one next to 'Zephirine Drouhin', and it may be a good thing that ZD is so puny, because the two together could put your eye out. A few roses in my garden have gotten rust when conditions for it were particularly favorable, but 'Complicata' never has. 'La Belle Sultane'/'Violacea' is good. In decent conditions it gets taller than most Gallicas: my best plant is about 6'; others, more starved, are shorter. It suckers, but not madly; has few thorns, good flowers, and is a fine healthy handsome rose.

I'm trying to get rid of Chas. de Mills, which I think I'll be doing for the rest of my life. His offspring were coming up under other roses and strangling them out. I might even have to dig those up and untangle their roots from his, then replant. I read that La Belle Sultane was well behaved and didn't sucker. I learned my lesson with CdM. Future gallicas will be planted where they can sucker to their heart's content. Catspat, It was suggested on one of these threads to use a stump and vine killer on what's left of him. That might be a solution for your mossy gallica. I'm still trying to see if I can do it without chemicals.

Carla, I grow this one and love it. However I wouldn't call it small. I actually grow it like a climber. Beautiful blooms, I have it on the same arch with Complicata and they compliment each other very well.
For samll gallica I would recommend Belle de Crecy, if you don't have it. It is smaller then 30+ other gallicas that I grow.

Hardly "small", that one. One of mine is now a patch over 20 feet long! Gorgeous rose, though.

I've got two Belle de Crecys...and neither is taking off as quickly/vigorously as most of my other gallicas...is this normal for Belle de Crecy? (one is ownroot from Sherando, the other is from a big box store...before I stopped shopping there.)

I have found that 'Belle de Crecy' is not one of the most vigorous of the Gallicas, and mine has never reached the size that many of the others have. Still, in time it will make a good shrub.

Robert, my BdC is grafted plant from Pickering, so it was quite big from start. It reached approx 4x4 feet in one year and now after 6+ years it is still probably around 5x5. I do prune it in winter to approx 3x3 or even smaller.

From what I've seen of Belle de Crecy, both at shows and in other people's gardens, it has not been a rose I've been at all tempted to get.

I've heard a good story about La Belle Sultan. Leonie Bell found it, and having grown it for a while, couldn't put up with the suckering. So she sent cuttings to Pickering, and when they put it in commerce as a budded plant, she bought one.

I really, really need to learn how to graft.

I actually one of the people who LOVE Belle de Crecy. It is very unique and fragrant in my opinion.

My Belle de Crecy is suckering rather prolifically. It is coming up all over its bed. Beware of some of these OGRs because they can sucker. My La Belle Sultane is not all that small either. Mine does not have a consistent color. It tends toward deep pink/fuchsia before it darkens to the magenta/purple phase with the bright yellow stamens. I like this rose, but I wish its flowers lasted longer.
