Japanese Maple brown tips and leaf curl

I bought a couple Japanese maples from Lowes. The leaves were curled when I bought tree with some brown tips.

I planted in the ground and notice two weeks later the brown tips has increased. Any clues as to what is causing the curl and brown tips. I planted on east side of house. It gets sun until about 1 pm.

Fungus? Sun scorch? Gotten plenty of water. Any clues?

Thanks in advance to anyone who shares their knowledge.

1. Transplant shock.
2. They may be in more sun now. I swear the four I own only tolerate sun up north in St Louis.

FWIW I think it looka pretty decent for an August transplant. It is not close enough to the house that reflected heat from the siding is cooking it or anything I assume?

All of mine in the ground are crispier than that at the end of August!

I guess you're talking about K. blossfeldiana?? Perhaps you can Google that name and see if it's the same plant? It's amazing you got your Kal to bloom a second time so soon after the first. Normally, after they flower, then in order for this type of Kal to rebloom is by either giving it shorter days for six weeks or a few weeks of cold, and withholding water. I've never cut mine back, it'd be a great experiment. The only thing about the type that confuses me is you said its leaves are large. What do you consider large? If a leaf breaks just set it on soil and it'll root. Same with a stem. Well, if it's a stem, you're better off inserting the entire stem in soil. Are brown edges crispy or soft? Toni

You've got to kind of wonder about the training of a 'master gardener' who believes fungal problems are only directly related to rain and lack of summer heat.......There are many causes to fungal issues and heat and dryness can certainly be contributing factors, just as much as damp, rainy weather. Heat and dry conditions are primary contributors to the development of powdery mildew, for example. It is impossible to be certain without an accurate diagnosis, but the symptoms resemble those of verticillium wilt, which is a soil borne fungal pathogen (no water or mild temperatures required - it just exists). It typically will affect only selected portions of the tree, leaving the rest looking fine. Until it fails completely :-(( Take a sample of the affected branches in to your local Cooperative extension office for diagnosis and ID. If it is VW, there's not much you can do other than remove the tree.

The biggest mistake I have made with newly planted maples in the past is to over-water them. Maples like moist soil, not wet soil. I would never water a maple every day. I would put mulch near (but not touching) the base of the tree and water about twice a week, even for newly planted trees. The great thing about maples is that they will rebound with fresh new leaves next spring. Also, they get more and more heat/sun tolerant each year they are in the ground. I have found it takes around 3 full growing seasons before they reach their peak heat/sun tolerance. -Brett

That looks physiological to me, not pathogenic. There are a couple of possibilities, depending on what you do with your plants. Some nutrient deficiencies can look like that; magnesium, potassium, maybe molybdenum. If you haven't fed them recently, or if you have been feeding them a straight NPK food and your soil isn't the best, consider supplementing with a complete fertilizer or tonic, one which has trace minerals. (I'm fond of Superthrive for hard-to-pinpoint problems like this.) Low pH can also mimic nutrient deficiency. It could be fertilizer burn, though it's not perfectly typical. If you've been feeding them a lot, lay off for a bit and see whether it resolves. The last possibility I can think of is spray burn. Sulfur and some oils can burn foliage at high temperatures (over 85F) and even simple soap at high concentration can burn; it's common for the tips of the leaves to get higher concentrations of the spray as it runs off. You didn't mention any earlier sprays, but if you have done any, watch your temperatures and try to get an even spray without a lot of runoff. Don't mix different sprays together, either. I don't suspect a fungus because the yellowing pattern is so regular, and the dead patches are in the center of the yellow areas which speaks of it either being the center of the toxicity/deficiency, or being a victim of sunburn as the leaves get too pale to handle the sun. Japanese Maples are slow growing and very slow to establish themselves...it will take 2 seasons for the roots to fully extend into your soil.It is very important to keep your tree well watered throughout next summer or you will get leaf burn on the tips like you have now...

Thanks everyone. Not close to house. Thats a good point I never thought of though. Thanks.

I got these from Lowes on the cearance rack. They have already dropped their leaves once this year and leafed out again. Just in the last day the leaves pictured above are brown, crispy and I pulld them today. Should I be concern with the plant dying? These trees are about 36" high with two main trunks about 1/2" in diameter. It gets sun until about 3pm.

Anything I can do to help the poor fellas?

"gotten plenty of water".....what exactly does that mean? What kind of soil conditions? Did you amend? If so, with what? What did the rootball look like? Have you fertilized at all?

Really all these little trees need now is adequate water. (*Note: adequate does not mean excessive water). And what that is will depend heavily on soil conditions and weather. Answering the above questions can help narrow down the problems but I think this is 95% transplant shock.
