What about the rose G. Nabonnand?

Randy used to always rave about G. Nabonnand, a tea rose...and now when he mentions his favorites, that rose doesn't come up anymore...and I am curious. Pictures of it in the Tea Rose book from Australia left me amazed. What's the consensus on this rose? Randy, do you still grow it and like it?

Susan, we've grown Rosette Delizy for years and years. We had General Gallieni long ago, but it was a poor plant. Never any disease tho! And the blooms were so lovely ... so when Gean offered me cuttings from her vigorous plant, I was grateful. It's growing well here now, in a large pot, and should go into the ground next year. And G. Nabonnand, we've had for maybe 4-5 years, and it gets better all the time. I've never seen any disease on any of the three, and I love the blooms on all. =========== Now, if you want to talk about BALLING -- The Cochets do ball here for me. But they are also completely clean, and bloom generously. And even when they do ball, they open about halfway, and still look lovely. :-) Here they are. Jeri

Jeri, my G. Nabonnand was on a west-facing hillside (so no morning sun) and not the lushest spot in the yard. But, Niles Cochet, which took its place, is doing fine there. It looked like it was covered with frost nearly ALL THE TIME, which really looked weird in August. Maybe it wanted more water than it got here, or a nicer spot? Whatever it was, it was not a rose for this place P.S. I really should start signing my given name again to ease confusions! I'm "Debbie" -- but understandable because Diane from Pacifica was also talking to you at the Celebration of Roses when I was this year. However, anything but "no roses" or "late to dinner" is fine by me :-)

Ah, but the Cochets DO ball here - or at least fail to open fully. I've two, Maman Cochet and Maman Cochet White - or at least supposedly MCW, it's rather more yellow than white although I gather the Cochet clan are generally delightfully variable. They were the roses my neighbor who has a flat wanted most of all the tea roses Beales offer, so despite me warning her that I'd been warned about balling, they are growing in pots in my garden till she moves this winter. And they don't ball exactly, they look beautiful still, not soggy brown mush, they just never fully open unless it's over 20 deg c and dry. Isabella Nabonnand doesn't do that, heartened to hear G does not either.

Wow that G. Nabonnand is gorgeous, Jeri. This is so tough. I cannot find a formula to help me select Tea roses, or maybe I just need to understand more about this class of rose. Mme. Antoine Mari, and Baronne Henriette de Snoy were roses I was unsure about, but they are performing very well. Lady Hillingdon is going to be shovel pruned or re-homed if I can convince an in-law in Camarillo to accept her. The problem with LH is the color holding up in the heat. I expect blooms to be smaller; as they all are if they dare bloom during the heat of Summer, but LH blooms are pure white now, and it is next to Darlow's Enigma and Marie Pavie, so I do not need another white rose in that area. It is difficult for a novice relative to this class of rose to find consistencies that could be an indicator as to whether or not a rose will perform well or horribly, and the indicators I have used for closer to two decades for modern roses just doesn't seem to apply.

My G.Nabonnand is still here (6 years), despite his tendency to mildew, because the flowers are numerous, just beautiful in color and form, and the rose is in bloom almost all the time. It is among the first in the spring and the last to end. More than a few mildew magnets have met their ends here (I'm more or less no-spray), but G. Nabonnand abides. I just "don't notice" when the leaves are crummy, and he hangs onto enough of them to keep going and not look that bad, overall, at a proper distance ;-).

Possibly my favourite rose. It literally never stops. My big bush has just had a wonderful flush and well before the last bloom is gone the new growth is in bud. It's not the rose everyone stops to admire, the colours are beautiful but subtle, but I think it would always endear itself to the gardener. Here it has no disease problems at all.

Hi, Jerome. Yes, 'G. Nabonnand' is still among my favorite roses. As far as big roses that I really enjoy in my garden, I'd put it right up there behind 'Nur Mahal'. It's a subtle rose that will charm you once you get to know it and it continues to be very healthy & productive for me.

I've really been concentrating on smaller-growing roses lately, with my space restrictions, but I haven't forgotten G. Nabonnand by any means.

By the way, are you finding it difficult to respond in Gardenweb lately? An ad for "inrichmedia.com" keeps popping up, eluding my pop-up blocker. It is almost impossible to type a response.

I am having the same problem Randy....You are right...I only "fooled" it by right clicking after minimizing it....it's awful. Thanks for your response - all the more heroic because of the difficulty making it. I am glad you still like this rose, because everything I have seen of it is spectacular.
