I've already started my rose list for next year. . .

Oh, my. I can't stop myself. The season is ending and I've already started a list of roses I want for next season. Better call the local nurseries soon and reserve these. Opinions anyone???. . .

Secret - Saw this at Heirloom. What a beauty and so fragrant. Gotta have it.

Eureka - Covered in blooms at a local rose garden. I had purchased Julia Child this year. Seeing this made me wonder if I had made the right decision.

Pope John Paul II - I had seen Maria Shriver and started to do research about it, when I found comparisons on Garden Web threads and determined that the majority favor this rose over Maria Shriver.

Velvet Fragrance - Saw this at Heirloom, where it was planted in several locations and doing well in their no spray garden. Beautiful blooms, fragrant. I have Veterans Honor, which I love but it has disease issues (bs and rust this year).

Charlie's Rose also known as Acapella - another rose I saw at Heirloom. Beautiful red with white reverse on outer petals. Have never seen this anywhere so will have to do some research.

Climbing Polka at Heirloom was spectacular. As was the Clement's rose The Impressionist! Me love it. I need a larger garden.

Of the Austins, I'm considering Tradescant because of its deep color. This was my first year for Austins and the verdict is still out. Tamora is my favorite, but it developed rust. I also have Sophy's Rose, Sharifa Asma, and Mary's Rose.

Anyone else? I'd love to hear what you are considering and any input about these beauties. Thanks, CJ

What do you meany by you started your list for the next year? Just started? I ordered long ago and even received this week some roses for the next year :)
I ordered from Pickering and Hortico for November fall planting and also got some bands from Vintage. Vintage bands are mostly albas, gallicas and spinosissimas, so they safely can be planted in the fall. I love hardy roses.

CJ You are going to love Polka! The flowers are Hugh, and they are a beautiful peach color, plus it is very disease resistant. I don't spray and no problems. I ordered 10 bands during the Vintage unloved rose sale. I have others that I want, but I have lots of work to make my front garden area a place where any plant will grow, let alone thrive.

I built 2 raised beds and filled them up with dirt this spring. One was for veggies, and the other was an extension of my partly shaded flower bed. I was late starting my tomato seeds and then the near triple digit heat in May hit. I've picked one grape tomato so far this year. The rest were split or stolen. I had 2 large green tomatoes, and yesterday I noticed that the squirrels must have twisted them off the vine and carried them away. My squash produced a few blooms and then got scorched to death. I planted potatoes for the first time, and I did have a pretty good harvest. I also picked a few cucumbers. My cannas and elephant ears never did come up this year. I usually cut them off after the first freeze, but I didn't last year. My guess is water/snow/ice collected in the stalks and turned the roots into mush. It seems I remember it got colder last winter than it has in many years as well. I planted a bunch of lily, iris, and canna bulbs in the new raised bed. Maybe 4 lilies came up. I think the squirrels dug up the cannas. I'm too depressed to even try to see what happened to the irises. After languishing for a few years, it looks like the gophers finally killed off my rose bush. It has been a great year for them. They've been in my flower beds and another hosta literally disappears each night. They've been celebrating in my fescue lawn as well. I've been on vacation this week, cleaning up and assessing the damage in the early morning hours. By 8 a.m., my shirt is already sticking to me. I planted a couple of knock-out roses I got a good deal on. I wrapped poultry netting around the roots and flooded all the gopher tunnels I could find. I purchased about $35 of starter plants and seeds on eBay just now trying to replace some of what I lost. They'll have to be babied the rest of the year and maybe grown in containers and overwintered inside. It can't stay this hot forever, can it?

What an interesting idea! Years ago- maybe 30- I visited a cousin in Ohio who had an impressive medicinal herb garden that included, I think, the apothecary rose and a rugosa or two. I wish I knew more about cooking and medicinal roses but I don't have much to offer. What might help a little is that if you visit the Antique Rose Emporium's website, they tell you which of the roses they offer have hips and which of those may grow for you. You might be able to call or email someone there (or any other antique rose nursery, I suppose) and get more information and advice. You might also get some information from the HelpMeFind roses website. I don't know if there is a lot there on roses useful for cooking but they will be helpful in letting you know whether that rose fits your specific growing conditions. Please let us know what you finally decide and how well the roses you choose accomplish their purpose.

I have been, but primarily thinking about the vegetable and cutting gardens I want to put in at the new place. At this point it is nothing concrete, just in-my-head planning. I haven't really been thinking about perennial beds and shrubbery outside of where I will put the items I'll be taking with me (remember that gorgeous tree peony I posted about? Gotta get her in the ground somewhere over there...) and maybe starting some Disco Belle hibiscus seeds I have over the winter. There are narrow beds surrounding the house but they're full of lava rocks (UGH!) so all I'll do this fall is remove the rocks over the area I need to plant what I need to from the move and deal with the rest of it next year. But yea - definitely want a big veggie bed and an area for a cutting bed, will have to put some thought into the fencing, sq footage, etc. I'm a planner at heart, so I'll thoroughly enjoy the process over the winter when the snow is flying and I'm soaking in my nice hot bath poring over books and seed catalogs :0)

Gillian, I can't comment on Ascot specifically, but my other roses didn't thrive with 5 hrs sun Cincinnati. Is the shade complete or dappled? I had to take out multiple roses that actually received more than that and am replacing them with Hybrid Musks and two hydrangeas. Viking Queen does OK, but way fewer blooms and growth than her twin in a full sun spot. The ones I moved to a sunnier spot are Sugar Moom, Falstaff and Heathcliff, and Darcey Bussell. Their shade was due to a spruce. Kristine, that's how my house is with the "hot" colours in the front, actually just daylillies, gallardia and black-eyed susans. I would like to add some deep purple to it, and I'm considering planting some roses if I could ensure they'd be BS free. It's the best sun in my house now that the oak tree limbs are cut back. I have a Cl. Clotilde Soupert and two cuttings of Sally Holmes that I'm considering going up the brick face or even on the brick wall. Hmmm. I'm loving the flowers and vigor of ClCS; it's one of my favorites this year.

cjrosaphile--I think I have an on-going list to which I add and subtract all year long. Not that I order that many since I've run out of space, but it is amazing how you can rearrange plants a bit and find room for one or two more roses. And when it gets down to one or two, you have to be really picky so that you get the right one--right? That's why I spend all year considering, rejecting, searching for the perfect rose for that one open spot.

Let's face it--we are all hopeless when it comes to roses. LOL

Yes, Kate, and I blame all of you for enabling me!!! Convincing me to place a 2nd fall rose order! Endangering my planned trip to the camellia garden nursery! Infecting me w/ 'what's over the next hill' disease! Tantalizing, tempting and luring me into 'money poor, rose rich' land!
I ordered 2 roses in spring '06, 2 in spring '07, then 5 in the summer, now it's fall and I've gotten 6 and 3, and just ordered another 6, and I'm trying to add 1 add'l rose to my order!!! What do you call this? Exponential growth? maybe LUNACY would fit better!
While I have quite a bit of space, I don't envision it being swallowed up by roses! I like low care shrubs and perennials- anything that doesn't have to be mowed! Brandy

Kate/dublinbay said it succintly and perfectly for me too. Never be without a "wanted" list when it comes to roses. Mulling over choices and rooting out information on our prospective next "babies" is much more fun and less tiring than actually getting out and weeding, etc. : )
cjrosaphile, you're going to love Secret. It IS a great rose. I'm curious agout Velvet Fragrance. I considered it a couple years back but heard mixed reviews. I guess it depends on climate and growing conditions. Supposedly, Vet's Honor is supposed to be more resistant to blackspot. But what do I know. I've never grown VF, only VH. I think both probably need spraying in many climates to stay free of disease.
