Hardy Roses for NE Ohio

Anyone grow Joseph's Coat from Heirloom Roses? Can "landscape roses" be used for a trellis?

I planted 6 climbing roses (3 Social Climbers, 3 Scent from Above) as a newbie this year. They have done well this year, but I hear they are not very hardy for my zone.

What I would like is to "shovel prune" the 6 roses in the spring possibly, and replant some hardy roses. I dont' want to have to worry overly much about BS, PM. I know I can't get away from all JB's, but I can only dream lol!

I want to start over with them and plant roses right for my zone.

I love the color of the Joseph's Coat, but don't know if they would be a royal pain to take care of here. I don't want to have to winter protect my roses.

I thought about John Cabot, and am keeping that in my plan. But I really had my heart set on something gold colored, not a gold that gets bleached out by the sun like the Scent From Above's do.

Thinking about going with Cornhill Nursery next spring for hardy roses. Anyone ever purchase there?

Hello kenstar, I have 4 polestar ownroot roses. They really do well here in zone 4 and they are a great rose. They are covered with white flowers in the spring and are once blooming. I wanted a hardy fast growing rose and I got it. I noticed they do like a lot of water if you want to get the fast growth though. The bud will appear somewhat pink right before they bloom but once they open they are white. You can plant this rose in zone 5 and not worry about winter kill under normal circumstances. Good choice

I will definitely write about the experience of everywhere we visit this weekend, if the weather holds out. : ( I already visited the rose garden in Richmond, In last year so I'm looking forward to seeing something new. . We're starting out visiting OARDC's Garden of Roses of Legend and Romance in Wooster on Saturday, then heading up for Peter Schneider's Open House which is beyond exciting. On the way back Monday, we'll visit the OGR section of the Columbus Park Roses ie. The Heritage Garden which is the former site of The ARS. LINK I'll be sure to post about it all. I went to CPoR last year and was ranting how they had torn out the OGR roses, not realizing there's entire section devoted to them beyond the modern plantings. We just missed the entrance. I had to eat my words on that one!

Hydrangeasohio, does your detached garage go below freezing during winter? If the pots will not freeze inside, it should be OK. However, I just don't think that you will be happy with the end results if the hydrangeas stay in the pots for a number of years. They really are much happier in the ground. For this same reason, I gave up some of my hydrangeas and gave them to friends, simply because I didn't have the ground space and they were not happy in the pots over the years. They included some Kaleidoscope (oops, I can't even remember the name now!! Ouch...), Forever and Ever, Claudie etc. All I have left in the ground now are my Endless Summer, Annabelle, and a number of paniculatas! I love my Annabelle and the P's because they are so carefree and hardy. OK, they don't have the colors of the macrophylla's but then my philosophy of gardening is, if you need too much babying, you don't belong to my yard! LOL! So, to answer your question, I do NOT winter protect my hydrangeas....just too lazy to do so..... LOL

Karen Sorry to hear of your mother-in-law. Also sorry I dont have the name of my rose but it is a dandy, bought it at lowes last summer and it has performed well from day one. It is not a knockout rose but had multiple sizable yellow roses. At the same time I bought a red one which didnt do well at all and in fact has no leaves on it at all but the yellow one Im quite proud of and am trying to clone the yellow one now. I also had no insect problems with this rose. Im in central indy and have had our share of freezes but look at this plant. I hope this helps and good luck.

Corn Hill has provided us with some good plants over the years.
If you go to Canada and purchase plants, you will have difficulty bringing plants across border into usa; three things are expressly prohibited: fruit; plants; and firearms. Customs may let plants through if you have phytosanitary inspection papers, but you are still in for a lenghthy hassle.

You can have bareroots shipped from Canada, but not potted roses.

Oh,ok never thought about that. Good to know. I don't mind bareroots, as my first roses were bareroot.

I plant only bare roots grafted on multflora, except for a few own roots that I got from fellow GWers'. I buy only from Canadian suppliers principally Pickering and Hortico. I hear Palatine I hear is also great. Never tried Cornhill.

Mainly because very few US suppliers offer grafted and if they do it is on Dr. Huey which is not that hardy here. And the other reason I buy from the Canadians is they carry many European bred roses that are hard to fine here. I'm a big fan of Kordes roses. Kordes breeds hardier roses than most hybridizers, at least they are aware of that market.

Just a note that Joseph's Coat is not disease resistant, so I would stay way from it.

It is a shame about SC and SfA. They do wonderful here.

Josephs coat is a known BS problem. Many here have shovel pruned it for that reason. I would keep looking and look at what some others suggest.

Corn Hill's plants are almost all own-root, not grafted.

If you get a chance to visit the Roses of Legend and Romance garden in Wooster (an Ohio state facility), you will see many fabulous roses that are definitely hardy. Some are Canadian Explorer roses, and many others are old roses. Well worth a trip. They offered quite a few roses for sale last year at their first ever open garden event in early June, and I'm hopeful they'll do it again next year. I'm from California, but was in Ohio visiting family, so went to the event and drooled over the roses but knew I couldn't legally take them home. You would have no such restrictions!

Not gold colored, but disease free, fragrant, vigorous, and hardy to zone 5b climber is Laguna. It is available from Palatine and Wayside Gardens, Palatine sells much bigger bareroot roses.
