Celeste, what lovely blooms. The autumn blooms are so great to see.

I like the fall foliage, the lakes and mountains are wonderful in autumn.

Nice pictures! Also, a nice method of presentation. It has gotten chilly here, and I think we got a bit of a freeze. Some things looked nipped. Most of my roses are about done for the year although a few are still going.

There was snow north of us in Nebraska already. Winter is probably not that far off, but, sorry to say, I am not ready yet.

I consider myself just a novice at this OGR growing - and esp. when I come to this forum. There is so much knowledge here, so much to read and learn. (And thank you Jeri for a few more book titles to add to my "library.") I have had some OGR's for years, but more recently have been "converting" more and more of my focus (and gardens) to roses of the past. And yet, there are very, very few people I have run into here in my corner of the world who share my enthusiasm. My 'local' rose society (the only one in the whole northern tip of the mitt and I travel 70 miles one way for meetings) is made up of a group of very nice folks whose focus is on growing (not showing) roses...but all the same theirs are modern roses. They have hornswaggled me into giving a talk about OGR's for one of this year's meeting topics since they consider me to be an "expert" - silly people! I haven't begun to construct my plan for the meeting yet, but it is my mission to convey the intrigue of the history, the beauty and the scent, and the ease of growing of these wonderful albas, gallicas, rugosas, centifolias, bourbons and more....much of which I have learned from you all, bless your hearts! So, just like Diane said, if there is no one else around, you share your own knowledge. But frankly, I don't think I will ever feel my antique rose education is complete and that's one of the things I love about these roses - there is always so much more to learn! Anne

I have a poor nose. A rose has to have an overwhelming scent to get noticed by me. The list of OGRÂs that are fragrant is nearly endless. Just to mention a few that I have, The Apothecary, Hippolyte and Jacques Cartier. An old rose that is also fragrant but not I think classified as an OGR despite being old is Baltimore Belle. ItsÂ flowers indivdually are not that fragrant but enmasse become overpowering. It has literally hundreds of flowers each cluster with 10 or more buds. As IÂm in Zone 5 I no longer grow HTÂs of which many are bred for fragrance so that gang is not on my list. I notice that an alleged legendarly fragrant HT, Crimson Glory is not mentioned. Probably too old. I once tried to grow it but it tanked early.

Good luck summers !! I hope it goes in your favor . If you are keeping your current home as a rental then that’s wonderful as you can slowly move your roses while having tenants ! :) i left behind 200 roses. I never thought we’d leave . If we were to leave I certainly never thought it would be to California the only state with restrictions on bringing in plants . I had to cut my garden back very painfully to show the home in the fall . My realtor was constantly harping on me about it . Thanks fully it sold in the early early spring so things were fresh and new by then . When we originally put it on the market in the fall , we were going to make a nice profit from the booming market in our town and move to a nicer school district a few towns over , so I planned on moving my roses. Then my husband got this promotion to California, so I had to say bye to all my beloved plants . I absolutely loathe the thought that the new owners probably removed my roses but that’s what happens . If you don’t like roses , you certainly won’t like 200 of them ;) when we bought this house in Ca there were 35 trumpeter landscape roses on the back pool wall bed . The lady loved that I loved roses and assumed I’d be caring for her very jarring red roses with the slightest hint of orange that really drove me nuts . Couldn’t wait to be rid of them !! Lol

Thank you Celeste-very lovely pics! The last of summer blooms are so beautiful probably because the cold helps them to stay brighter and longer...very fridgid here, freezing temps past few nights. (sigh)...

Celeste - this is just gorgeous. We rarely get good foliage color this far south in Texas - the landscape there is breathtaking.

And your roses are beautiful. My favorite is Fairy Tale. I have a thing for apricot. But I love the shape of Heritage. Thanks for posting.

Hi Celeste. So good to see another post from you. I love Brothers Grimm and the unknown pink climber. Our leaves are just starting to turn here. I like the composition of the first picture with the leaves.

Beautiful photos Celeste! I love WHITE GOLD!! Your autumn scenes are so lovely. I always enjoy seeing other people's pics from back east. We get a tiny bit of the fall colors here in the Sierras, like maybe for a week at most; but nothing as spectacular as what you get to see. This yr it's late. My neighbor's pistachio tree usually is a gorgeous golden color by now. It's still green! They say we're expected to have an "El Nino" winter, so I guess we'll be a little warmer than usual, but we could get tons of rain, which CA really needs! It's pretty cold now, nonetheless. I am not looking forward to winter at all. By body aches, and there's fewer and fewer blooms!!! Altho, I do have several roses that typically bloom up til New Yr's!

Wow! What beautiful roses and scenery!! I love New Hampshire. I went to camp there a zillion years ago in the Lisbon/Littleton area; not far from Mt. Washington. Where are you located?

Gorgeous, Celeste. I love your roses and the autumn colors are to die for! I am so jealous of the New England and Canadian areas in terms of the intense beauty of leaves! Here in Kansas everything is muddy browns and yellows, never the candy reds and brilliant tangerine oranges. Absolutely stunning!

Celeste, those are great photos - I didn't note any damage from frosts. You posed your subjects well. Here, I have some roses still blooming as well. Quietness is indeed one of them - that is such a good rose! Sydonie is still blooming her beautifully cupped and fragrant blooms, too. I should follow your lead and get out the camera if we have a bit of dry weather. It snow flurried here all weekend and tonight we could have some accumulating snow, although they're saying less than an inch. Our leaves on the trees have been so beautiful but that snow will knock a lot of them down, especially those lovely reds that I enjoy the most.

Thanks for all your comments! I haven't posted all summer because I was so busy but its good to be back with all my friends here. Winter's coming and rose season is ending, so its time for posting!

It was a beautiful and crisp day here today and the foliage
is outstanding this year, no doubt to an extra-rainy summer. Tonight they mentioned the 'S' word is a good
possibility with the temps getting cold enough for it.
That would make a good photo....snow on roses!!
This was the shortest summer I remember. It rained almost
every day of June and this summer it never got hot. The roses
did just fine, though.

Beth, White Gold is new for me this year and I am SO
pleased with it. It grew quickly and put out loads of blooms, which as you can see are very full and lovely.
Even better, the foliage is so incredibly glossy and healthy that the entire plant was picture-perfect all summer. You can even see from the photo above that the
leaves are shiny and disease-free...(I never sprayed it).
I highly recommend this rose.

Carol, Littleton is a bit north of me, but we do go up
to the White Mountains often on our motorcycle for scenic
rides or to go hiking. Its not too far. Mount Washington
and the presidential range appear even larger and more grand when viewed from a motorcycle! I feel very small indeed! I do love my state, which is why I endure the long, cold winters. It really is beautiful here. I just wish the rose-growing season was longer.

Anne, I was selective in my picture-taking, that is why you don't see any balled-up, frozen and crumpled blooms.
But most of the buds and blooms are junk right now...these
somehow escaped damage. Yes, Quietness is amazing in every
way. She stands over 4 feet tall and wide and is one of the last roses to give up blooming in the fall...right now she must have 2 dozen blooms on her with many buds still.
I love how winter-hardy and healthy she is, and so lovely.
If she was fragrant she would be perfect. Even so, she is
one of my favorites.

Celeste, I do believe you grow some of the most beautiful roses on the forum, and the fall pictures are lovely. I can only hope that some day my Bishop's Castle will be as beautiful as yours. The unknown climber is really gorgeous, and I hope it will be identified some day.

Beautiful! I love the unknown pink climber, it must be special as it repeats. We had our first frost here Sun. night. DH bought a motorcycle this summer (I have not gotten on it yet, have to work myself up to it) and he went with a group from work on the Kancamangus on Sun. He said it was beautiful.

I like how you all especially like the unknown pink climber! This rose is a bit of a mystery, since it repeats all summer long, has a fragrance like an expensive perfume (not heavy but refined), has the most disease-free, glossy foliage I have seen on a climber, and has gorgeous large blooms with many petals. I got it years ago at a 'cheapo' store around here, labeled as "Pink Queen" but I have searched high and low on HMF and dozens of rose books and have never seen it listed. Awhile back on this forum, someone told me they thought it might be 'Coral Dawn'....another thought it might be 'Viking Queen'. One thing I know for sure is that it is a wonderful addition to my garden! It always has blooms well into the very cold days of Fall each year. It does have significant dieback each winter but even though I have to cut it back to about 1-2 feet each spring, it gets up and over my arch by the end of summer. I really love it!

Celeste, I could almost swear that yours is Viking Queen! I hear that it is incredibly BS resistant, huge blooms and here are key photos that look identical to yours.
