I can sympathize, I discovered a bunch of this growth on many of my roses out of 100+ I grow. Unfortunately at this stage in my life (two toddlers) I just don't have the time to do much. I've resigned myself to losing my roses and just to wait for that time. I barely have time to spray and prune.

That does look pretty wierd, Carla, especially the part at the lower part of the picture. Maybe pruning out the cane will work.

eaj09, maybe you could do a minimal thing and prune out affected canes and see what happens. I sympathize.

Carla I feel for you, this RRD is a bad bad thing. It seems more and more people are getting this. Over the past few years on GW I see more people saying they have it in their garden.

I hope it will not affect too many of your roses.

Carla, I lost 3 roses to RRD here in NC in the last four years - less than one per year. Each time I have been terrified that others near them would have it too. So far, that has not been the case. I have never gone for cutting off the cane and hoping for the best. I always dig and burn as soon as I recognize RRD. So far this has worked. Good luck in your garden.

It kills me because I have been waiting for Mons. Tillier to mature and now that it has, sick! I dug up another rose today and am watching in freakish anticipation. I'm so paranoid others are going to get it.

I have lost several roses in the past to RRD. However, in the last 2 growing seasons I haven't had any with RRD. I wonder if it's because I started using Avid? Has anyone else experienced a decrease or "no" RRD with using Avid?

A friend in west Knoxville has been using Avid and it hasn't stopped her roses getting RRD. She's got multiflora in a wild area upwind of her garden; her husband has tried to remove all the multiflora they see and can get to. That (and maybe the Avid) have reduced the number of plants they loose each year, but they still are loosing roses.
Kentucky Rose, is there any chance that you've had fairly wet summers for the past two years? My own worst losses came a year that was both hot and dry and my roses well watered.

Surely someone somewhere knows of a chemical? I have used Wilt Pruf every time I spray. Apparently, RRD lurks nearby or those are some mighty mites. Tomorrow I will go out and take the whole Mons. Tillier out I suppose.

I found one rose with RRD this spring. The first ever for me. I dug it up and burned it right away. Then I did two sprays for mites. So far so good - no other occurrences.

Fortunately the wooded lot next door which had tons of multiflora in it has been cleared. There is still a small patch of woods (not directly upwind) with multiflora in it. I am going to ask the neighbors for permission to clear the multiflora this winter. Some of the "bushes" are hugh - way up in the trees.

I have a question at this point. Since RRD is a virus, has anyone done any testing of any kind to see if Messenger's immune response system jump-start has any effect on this problem? I wonder if someone would be willing to try it and see. Could an affected plant be isolated or quarantined and sprayed to see if there is any effect? I'm just curious.

bustopher, with winter coming, I don't want to do any tests with Messenger. It is an interesting idea though.

I'm sorry about your rose. Scarry every time I read it. My sympathies to every one who has lost a rose to rrd. Found the same growth on pomponella yesterday. I check my roses daily [spend more time looking at foliage than flowers]and can't believe how fast it grows. One day it's not there and the next it is.

Re Messenger.
We don't know anything about how it could affect RRD.
What would be needed would be sick roses, a hort farm and a scientist affiliated with the farm and messenger.
There are some research funds that can be applied for through ARS.
If you know anyone with access to a hort farm, I'd be happy to work with them to write a proposal.

The work would have to be done on a hort farm or in a building with isolation chambers. Pretty much anything can be tested on a hort farm (I'm not sure I like this, but that's the way it is.)

As long as I used Wilt-Pruf every 2-3 weeks religiously without fail and I don't mean just a dab here and there, but a couple quarts to each spraying, I never had any RRD, even last fall. I slacked up my spraying this year since we have had virtually no blackspot as no rain and I wish I had not. Now I have RRD, but Messenger had no effect whatsoever and I used it for 4-5 years.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I've been working too many hours these past couple of weeks and have not had time to check the rose forum. Yes, my name is Denise and I live in Chapel Hill. I found RRD on a tea rose in the fall and didn't recognize it. In the spring, I realized what it was and took it out. The next year I found it in the fall on Rosette Delizy. I found it on another tea in the fall of the next year. So far, so good this year!

Hi Denise. I don't know how your name stuck in my head but it did. I'm also sorry for your RRD. I have a baby Rosette Delizy. I cut Mons. Tillier way back but will wait to see what happens in spring. I hope you're not working so much that you can't enjoy your roses!

Life after RDD....its pretty hard to pull yourself out of the dumps when it hits your garden. You think its all over but hey it cannot be any worst than, spider mites, thrips, canker, blackspot,powdery mildew, RMV, voles, moles, nematodes, japanese beetles,....did I leave anything out? But I am still plugging away regardless. Take one out.....replace it with another and so it goes. I just love roses too darn much to give up.

I can deal with or avoid the problems you list. I can't protect my roses from RRD. I can try some cultural avoidance mechanisms, and I still grow roses, but then I get mad, really mad at the scientists who spread this disease on purpose, and who convinced a lot of folks that RRD doesn't affect cultivated roses.
My cultural avoidance mechanisms are redesign of rose beds to facilitate air flow, plant for cultivation of beneficial insects, mites, etc., and removal of sick plants as soon as the problems emerge.
I can't have the massive rose arches that I have wanted forever. I can't even have a few large roses without losses.
RRD is worse. Maybe it makes us appreciate the better times.

Ramblin, We have voles here. In fact the monsters killed my first Pat Austin and Kronprincessin Viktoria. I started using Perma Till for that. Ann is right, there is no real precation for RRD and it does make your feelings change about roses.

RRD is a real BUMMER! I have been lucky so far and only lost one rose, a huge Mme Issac Pereire, which was promptly ripped out. I won some nice hardware with that rose.

The rose, a Minden rose, that I gave my Chigago based daughter came down with it. It had reached a 6'footprint. She is reluctant to part with it and is trying the cane removal method. Worth a try.

Ann, it does seem that RRD is partial to large rose plants.

Oh Iowa Jade what a shame to lose that rose! Mme Issac Pereire is beautiful, I was looking at it from the link you posted. I only had RRD on the one rose (a seedling) ..... but I have been going over my roses with a fine tooth comb everyday, checking every little growth that appears and so far all is ok. Here is the rose, I started this from a seed.

Mind you, I have had rose gall, I have had blackspot, cercepora, anthracnose, powdery mildew and even a few cases of downy mildew. I have had more thorns in me than I care to count. I have lost roses to voles, I have lost roses to a neighbor spraying herbicides (thankfully I got that stopped), I have lost roses to tornadoes and I have lost a couple to a drunken driver who tore up my front yard and my solid brick and steel mailbox, and I can deal with all that, but RRD is nothing I can do anything about. Hence, after finding approximately 50 roses about 2 years ago and this year, I have already found 15, I am shutting down the roses and will just enjoying seeing all of yours here. Maybe I will start planting maples, oaks, pine trees, but then there is that scarcity of water. Maybe I will just become a voyeur of your lovely gardens.

My small group of succulents are looking better and better. I'll be making more over winter and will share, for rose stories.

I have abandoned big roses due to RRD. It takes a few years to get a rose to grow big, then to have to remove it is heartbreaking, not to mention the huge hole in the garden. So, for now, I'm not planting any more big roses.
