Flame Maple-Help ASAP

Hi guys, I need your help! I have a Flame Maple (I believe its called Acer ginnea 'Flame'?)thats not looking so good. Its leaves are turning yellow and falling off. Its too early for it to be loosing its leaves. Its nearly 15ft. tall and close to twenty years old, so I really dont want to lose it. Do you know what disease it has and how I can treat it? Thanks so much!

It's been getting cold at night, I'm seeing trees with fall color. Especially the trees along roadsides, that haven't been receiving summer irrigation.

If it is drought stress, the tree is doing a fine job of taking care of it's self. It'll drop leaves to conserve it's own moisture. If you went out now, and turned a hose on it, the Maple could actually drown.

I'd just let it go, you'll get a second chance in April.

You may be right...im no expert. But I have six of these maples, all planted in two pairs around my yard. This is the only one that is having this problem, so im not sure that its just an early fall color. Weve had some rain here over the last few weeks and I normally wather deeply every week. I hope this isnt any serious disease.

We have the same exact tree, planted partly underneath a huge bur oak. It's been there since at least 1998. It's an aggressive grower & definitely tends to grow toward the light. We've had to prune it significantly over the years to get a more even balanced shape. Otherwise, it would definitely have much of its growth toward one side. It seems to take to the pruning very well. Based on that, I think I would prune the tree to be more balanced now. Best wishes, Randy W.

hi i am also building a new home and need to decide on a flooring color for the entire house. we are doing cherry cabinets but LOVE dark walnut floors. we are afraid with cherry it will be too dark in the kitchen. we also have 2 large dogs and have heard that dark stains are terrible with pets because they show the scratches big time. we are wondering if we should go for the dark color we love, go lighter with a medium stain like special walnut or provincial, or just leave them natural to avoid the scratching. i really don't like the natural color at all though.

Dianalo - Both door styles are available with an arch or square. My husband and I both prefer square. I've looked at sample doors at both Home Depot (American Woodmark) and Lowe's (Shenandoah). I don't remember thinking that the veneer looked obvious. However, on one of the really dark (Maple Espresso) solid wood doors, I saw a white line around the center panel from the contraction of the wood. That would definitely be a concern if we were to choose Wyoming/solid doors, especially with a dark stain like Cherry Bordeaux. I should also note that Wyoming has solid wood dovetail drawers. We would upgrade the Cumberland drawers to dovetail if we end up choosing that style. Dilly_ny - Interestingly enough, the builder said that these 2 door styles would cost the same in either maple or cherry. That's one of the reasons we're going with cherry. Any other thoughts?

One out of 6, hmmm. Anything new around the tree? Anything sprayed? Does the tree get the same water as the other 5? Could it be in a more exposed area?

I really appriciate all your help nwnatural. There isnt anything new around it...I did spray for aphids twice, but that was in the spring so its not that. I did 'top' all them a few weeks ago, but I doubt that would be a real problem. It gets as much water as the others, and its actually closer to my house, so I asume that it would have more protection. I went out yesterday to get a closer look at it. The leaves are not drooping, and there doesnt seem to be any sort of bug or anything on them or the stems. The leaves are turning yellow, but their veins are still green. The leaves then get brown around the edges, and fall off.

O.K., it's very hard to diagnose any problems without being able to physically see the tree!

And having said that, yellowing leaves with a green vein is very typical of over-watering. Still, I don't think your tree will die because of it. Spring is always around the corner, it's a second chance for us gardeners.
