Is this a good size Koi pond
Comments (26)Bbrigs, I didn't take it as an attack, I just wanted to explain why I think it's the most important thing you can do when building a big pond. When we built our pond ten years ago we included a bottom drain, only because the salesman explained the premise behind it. We have a gravity fed system and had one filter tub the first year, the second year we added a second and third filter tub. Then I wanted a small pond adjoining our rose garden, so Cliff took this idea and made the small pond a biological pond for the big pond. It it eighteen feet away from the main pond and after the water leaves the three filter tubs that are daisy chained together it travels 18 feet underground and spills into the biological pond. The water then travels through the bio pond getting scrubbed by all the vegetation in there then exits the bio pond, travels back underground and spills into the main pond from under the small wood dock in back of the main pond. Then we added a skimmer under the wood dock to catch all the surface leaves etc. We only use the skimmer in spring and fall. We have been talking about daisy chaining another tub or two to the existing system, but so far we've been managing with what we have. You are absolutely right bbrigs when you say a good filtration system is essentially, my point is to start with the bottom drain, then you can add more filtration, bio and mechanical, you can make the pond bigger (we did that as well --two times) you can add a skimmer, more waterfalls, etc...all this can be done after. That's is what I mean when I say the BD the single most important thing you can do for your pond, start there and everything else can be made bigger and better and more efficient later on. Rose, We have a lot of fish, about 10 large koi, 3 large orfes, 2 goldfish and several medium koi that are off springs of our koi. Comments (8)Oh darlin', how stressful for you and the fish. I thought about lots of woo-woo that could be going on but do you suppose they are hiding in plain sight when they see what they think might be a threat? Or perhaps Shark just still needs a rest once in awhile in a spot he thinks is safe and Spectacles is commiserating? Prazi is pretty potent stuff. Do the math again to eliminate all the stuff in the pond. It may be closer to accurate than you think. If nothing else it will keep you busy and not obsessing. I needed to use it only once and remember being a nervous wreck about getting it right but it worked like a charm. Now after all the warnings they used to put out, they say it is gentle and you don't have to repeat it. Guess it has been a long time since I used it for the pond. I'm not sure why you used it though. Do you know for sure they had parasites or was it prophylactic? If that was it then a lower dosage might have been called for anyhow. Since I'm not a Vet I'm probably just blowing smoke. There are so many newbies here. Maybe it is time for a discussion about Praziquantel. I know I needed a refresher. I attached a link signed by Dr. Johnson. Here is a link that might be useful: tips on using Praziquantel....See MoreIowa Koi ponds?
Comments (4)Yes, there are some exceptional sources for mentoring, regarding water gardening and koi keeping. Americanponders is definitely not one of them. Alas you are more likely to run into some very unreliable folk who are neither competent or indulge in bait and switch, condoned by the moderators. A good example is the thread 'where is Greg Bickal.' A very interesting water gardener and koi keeper. You will notice a moderator say 'everyone is welcome' then along the thread downright slander. Fairly typical for folk with a track record of 'bait and switch' fraud, to bait disputes with false, malicious misleading statements, then using the response as an excuse to slander and offend them. Other forums have far more competent and civil moderation and would not tolerate such disreputable behaviour...See MoreKoi Pond from Sherwin Williams photos??
Comments (6)Lolita, Thank you so much for the encouragement to step out of my comfort zone. I really like this color and think it will look perfect. I have a sample of both full strength and 75% and for the poster board size I tried I prefer the slightly lighter but as my SW friend and employee said it didn't lighten it as much as she thought so still has a richness to it. What other colors did you use in the rooms adjoining your entry? I have to tell you a story - when I was newly married (21 years ago) my sister-in-law worked on a dude ranch in the French Riviera and gave me and DH a 9 hour horse pack trip as a wedding gift. I rode a beautiful grey horse named Lolita and we had a wonderful day riding through the hills and canyons to a private lake in the mountains. :) Not comparing you to a horse but thought I'd share my memories of your name Lolita. Thanks again, Sunny...See MoreTerry Crawford
