New to brugs....should they be cut back now?

I recently received & planted some large brugs (4-6 feet tall) that I'm hoping will winter over in the ground even though they haven't been planted long. The frost we had a few nights ago started to kill my brug foliage, lantana, & other things. Should I go ahead and cut back my brugs and if so, how far?

I wait until I see new growth in the spring. They need to be mulched for the winter. I've heard that other people cut back now and mulch heavily but I seem to lose them when I do. Linda

I was told to cut them back now, mulch heavy, AND put a pot/bucket of shredded leaves over the "stump" of the brug - to inlcude the pot/bucket. Doing so will keep the water from rotting it out, etc.

FYI, The Brug I planted several years ago - i did not cut back, and did not cover with leaves - and i lost it - so i am going with the bucket of leaves!

I'm growing the variety called Schwellenberg that Blue Stone perennials offered in their catalog. It's really a nice plant and doesn't lean or spread. It's color is a buttery yellow, about 24 inches high counting the flowers and with gray-green foliage. I cut all the brown flowers back, taking off about 8 inches. All the bottom foliage is left, but looking a little yellow and bedraggled with all the high temps and drought conditions we've had. I just thought cutting it down further would fresh up the plants a little, but that may not be the case. My salvia responded to cutting back after flowering so well that I thought yarrow might do the same. I just noticed there are some newer stems sprouting from the old stems.

failed to cut back Jackmanii--what to do now?

This picture of my 6 year old Jackmanii was taken this morning / May 22/2011. I hard prun it each year around the middle of March here in middle TN. For the life of me I can not get it to bloom from the bottom up, never..All the blooms are always at the top.. There is probably 4 feet of green leaves that you cann't see in this picture and not one single bloom at the bottom .The plant is in a large pot and is probably 12 feet tall and has reached the top of its trellis and flopped back down some. The plant always puts out lots of vines from the crown, but my problems is with the blooms at the top only. I think next year i'll not hard prun it and just trim it up and see what I get. Sandy

With a few rare possible exceptions, pruning ferns just doesn't accomplish anything. This isn't the wrong time, but only because there isn't a right time... Patrick Alexander

nana- OMG YES -It's 12 days too late! LOL I bet they would do ok it trimmed now.... only one way to find out! WHy do you need to trim them? I first heard the 4th of July thing back in the days of tall chrysanthemums.... if you didn't pinch them a couple times you would have to stake them since they got four feet tall by the time they bloomed... the kinds that are sold today are self branching and stay much shorter. Do you want to 'reset' the blooms? Maybe if you keep up with deadheading they'll last into the fall?
