*** Quite by accident, we were there on that weekend, some years back.
We spent most of the previous day by ourselves in the place tho, and that was the best part. Of course, it rained off and on most of the day, but I can appreciate an old cemetery in the rain.
I still have nightmares about going down that hill in the motorhome . . .

Love your photos. The photo of Chestnut Rose is terrifically clear! I like taking pictures of roses on headstones, too. Many of my favorites are little broken buds, symbols of babies and children.

That's where I got hooked on OGRs. I only live about 20 miles from the Cemetery. I will definately be there next spring at the next Antique Rose Festival. Maybe we can all wear a rose in our lapel or something so we can recognize each other.

We'll do better than that. When the date is posted, we'll make plans to actually meet up -- instead of trying to rely on finding the other GWers.

I left with hips from Old Blush in one pocket and Blossomtime in the other. The seeds from both are safely tucked into the crisper in the 'fridge. This is the first year I will have tried to grow rose seedlings -- we'll see what happens.

It was the low winter sun that made the chestnut rose hip so dramatic. and the shallow depth of field blurred the background away to accentuate the subject.

I forgot to show you the structures they use at the cemetery to keep some of the larger roses upright. Rebar semi-circles with legs attached keep the roses tight against the wall (or fence). I'm storing this info away in case I need it later.

That's interesting Connie. They did not have those structures when we were there. They remind me of gigantic tomato cages.

And did you check out the stout anti-deer structures around some of the roses planted on graves? Like wire mazes, some of them. I love visiting the cemetery, and appreciate the great job they've done to make it an interesting historical site.

When we were there, the younger plants were enclosed in chickenwire. Rabbit protection, I thought.
Clearly, they've done a great deal, since we were there.

One thing that really impressed me there was -- it was clear the Cemetery Assn. had really taken the roses to heart.
Included in the various "self-guided tours of" brochures (ie., tours of famous residents resting places) was one that
guided the visitor around the roses and discussed them.

Your photos are amazing. There is something so romantic to me about late fall roses, I love the deeper colour of the petals, the browning around the edges, the bend in the leaves, the sunlight. Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us. I enjoyed every bit of it.
