Felicia - this one is quite a nice tight rose - it grows fast and evenly - tends not toflop or sprawl but makes a nice square 4foot bush.
Nur Mahal is a little bit more unruly - it throws out a few longer arching canes and itis generally wider than high. Bigger than Felicia. I think, like Moonlight, you could get this to grow on a fence or a obelisk rather than free standing if space is an issue as the canes are thick but flexible.
Ulrich BF - I only remember seeing this fleetingly and it didn't seem very upright or vase shaped to me - it looked like quite a short, chunky spreader, wider rather than tall (but I may be confusing this with another rose as it was ages ago since I last saw it. Dunno about FP

Nur Mahal (is he wide or upright?)

Upright and kinda wide. Mine is ON the northeast corner of the house, so he gets minimal morning sun. He's two years old, a good 10 feet tall, nearly naked and very rangy. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? :-( But I have hope. In the spring and early summer he's well foliated and blooms pretty well. I even fed him about a month and a half ago, but he didn't respond. He's not bothering anyone, and DH gets excited when he blooms outside his den windows so he's staying. I don't know if I should hack him back or what. Given our dissimilar locations my comments are probably irrelevant. :))

Sherry, it was relevant, although musks tend to stick to their foliage over here usually - also it is useful to know DH likes/dislikes, as NH looks like something my DH might like among his thistles. :)))

I grew Ferdinand Pichard in Cornwall up a pergola post.
It worked, sort of. It was in full sun.
He got to about eight foot high, but also bushed out about four foot.
He didn't seem to mind being trussed up to a post.
Bloomed well, and was one of my healthier roses there.

I got rid of Chapeau de Napoléon because of its lanky and floppy habit. I moved it once but a sunnier location didn't help improve its growth habit. It may work as a leggy pillar rose.

Mariannese's right about the habit of CdN, but I grew it next to the shorter and more upright 'Capitaine John Ingram' which it sprawled all over, and they were wonderful together. I notice that Vintage describes CJI as large and sprawling, but my plant had more of a Gallica habit. Anyway, 'Chapeau de Napoleon' is worth having even if it is lanky and floppy, for the great sepals and beautiful fragrant flowers. I don't know whether forceful pruning would help.
Is 'Cuisse de Nymphe Emue' different from 'Maiden's Blush'? I had an impression that they were names of the same rose, or perhaps CdNE and 'Great Maiden's Blush'. Or is CdNE a different rose from 'Cuisse de Nymphe'? In Italy CdN and 'Maiden's Blush' (or 'Great Maiden's Blush') are used as synonyms.
'Felicia' has always been shrubby for me. 'Ferdinand Pichard', which I grew once and didn't greatly care for, I recall as tall and leafy, not a flopper, taller than wide if I remember correctly.

Cuisse de Nymphe Emue is not the same as Cuisse de Nymphe. They are similar but Emue (also called Belle Thérèse) supposed to have more intense and more evenly pink flowers.

I do not mind sprawling, as my aim is to plant that bed so, that there is no ground visible, so some sprawlers are great for that. :)

My mother has had a somewhat neglected own-root Ulrich Brunner for about 50 years now and I've had a cutting from it for about 5. Definitely upright. In good conditions, throws out long canes that can be pegged, but also easily kept pruned as a tidy shrub. A real survivor.

Can't imagine Felicia as 4x4 bush. Here it is more like 6x6 even with good pruning or more if you allow it.

I had Cristata as a newbie rose gardener many years ago and I think I could handle it better now. I do miss the buds and flowers. I've started to hard prune many roses only recently, it takes some time to become bold enough to do that.

Thanks for the information about 'Cuisse de Nymphe Emue'; you answered a question I hadn't known I had. My mind is clearer now (and I'll have to look out for 'Belle Thérèse').
When I describe 'Chapeau de Napoleon' as lanky, I mean that, if allowed to grow moderately tall, it's an open plant, not dense, as I recall. I do think that it would do well mingling its foliage and blooms with a shorter, more upright growing rose with flowers that pair well with it; or you could try the pruning and see how it works.

Olga, I think you have about 1-2 month longer growing season than we do here, so there might be differences in sizes due to that. For reference, Cornelia here can get 5x5 (as there is an old bush of her in nearby public garden). Don't think she is going to get taller there, wider however is a different story. :D

melissa, if mine does well, you can have the cuttings. :) Have you seen those new albas bread by Sievers? Royal Blush gets me drooly as well as some others of their line. :D

I plan to pair Chapeau de Napoleon with Stanwell Perpetual, Nur Mahal and Dupontii (of which I have 5 I think, as all the cuttings you sent me rooted and are escaping from their pot already...). I don't know if that plan is going to work out, and I risk creating the impassable jungle, then again if it does work out, it may be nice wildish corner. :)

I love the idea of cuttings, although what you tell me about postage in the Netherlands gives me pause. Perhaps I ought to warn you that 'Dupontii' gets large, at least in this part of the world. But it's a favorite of mine, one of the loveliest roses I know. Now you'll be able to spread it around.
I grew those Sievers roses when I was in Olympia (Washington state), and although they were jammed in among mature Albas and had no room to grow, some of them were beautiful. I don't remember the details now. I've thought about them for here at the farm. Who carries them?

Yeah Melissa, but then again, cutting exchange is not only about getting cheaper plant. :) I saw Dupontii growing here in public park, it did not look too large, I just hope it can take quite a bit of shade.
Sievers roses I think are carried by a few, Karin in Germany has some, De Bierkreek over in NL carries some, but it is a bit sparse, in a sense that usually one nursery carries only one or two varieties and so on. They used to have their own site also, but it seems to be offline at the moment (I checked it good month ago and it still was working, so might be just some technical issues or redesign, etc)

Duponti is about 7x4 ft at Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
Cristata used to be kept to a 5ft tall by 4 wide at NYBG.
My Stanwell Perpetual spent 3 to 4 years growing wide before gaining any height at 5 years it's only 4 ft tall but very dense and about as wide

Ulrich is just a sport of Paul Neyron and grows the exact same way. It can be a vase shape. If let go, it will throw out long 6+ foot upright canes that will arch over much like Paul Neyron.

Aha, I think I have probably seen it (UBf) when it was actually pegged down - it was in one of those very grand gardens where that sort of thing was de rigeur. I do remember it took up a fair bit of floor space.
