I love Perle d'Or, and frankly, I think its bloom is prettier than that of Mlle. Cecile Brunner. I've never seen a Cl, version, but I wonder if it would be a once-bloomer, as are most climbing clones of the Mlle.

I've seen several Perle d'Ors growing in Santa Cruz, CA that are at least 10-15 feet against a wall. I think Pd'O grows so well in CA that it could be trained as a climber.

A 'Perle d'Or' at the Sacramento Cemetary reached 10 feet tall before it was pruned back, this is the original form, not the climbing form.

I espaliered a Perle d'Or for my neighbor against his house it's in full bloom this Thanksgiving week. I only like to espalier rosesbushes that have attractive foliage and lots of it othewise the canes are too visible.
Perle d'Or's re-bloom is quick even without deadheading whichh is an advantage over most climbing forms of rose cultivars.
I keep the espaliered plant to c. 3 and 1/2 feet from the wall of the house outwards, 5 and 1/2 feet wide, and I'm letting it grow up to be 6-7 feet tall.
We're in the San Francisco Bay area.

In the 1960's there was a climbing form of Mrs.B.R. Cant' oh how I wish that was in commerce!

Thank you all so much. My neighbor wants to grow one up against a wall, and it sounds as if they bush form will get tall enough, so that solves that question.

I know this is an old thread, but I was looking up something for 'Perle d'Or' and thought of something relating to this question. Have you considered getting 'Yellow Sweetheart, CL'? It would give a similar look to a climbing 'Perle d'Or.' I just thought of it because I happen to have it on order for myself.

I'm so glad you revived this tread with a link to "Yellow Sweetheart." I have been trying to find a good yellow climber for against my house ever since Jackie attached a photo of her Lady Banks against her house. Neither me nor my little house can manage a huge scrambler like LB, but the thought of a yellow rose really caught my fancy. This is such a nice coincidence and very helpful. Thank you!

Climbing Jackie is another very nice climbing rose - a Ralph Moore mini that can grow to ten feet tall, and repeats well. Another yellow rose that I love is Casino, despite its stiff canes and fierce big prickles. I took out my Casino because it didn't espalier well - canes wanted to grow stiff and straight - but I really miss its beautiful buttery yellow flowers.

Anita, I'm glad you mentioned Casino. I also took mine out because it was in too small a space but the flowers are truly beautiful. I think it's a very classy rose.

It's amazing what supposedly small roses will do when placed against a wall. Aunt Margy's Rose, a polyantha, is now trying to reach 8 feet against my house wall instead of the 3-4 feet it normally aspires to. It has abundant beautiful foliage and small cabbage-type lilac pink and fragrant roses. I'm surprised this rose isn't better-known.

Mine grows about 7 or more feet tall unless I prune it back, and that is free standing. I would imagine it could grow taller.

Well, thank goodness for this thread. Today I went to plant a gallon plant of what I thought was the bush form of Perle d'Or that I bought at the Strybing Arboretum plant shop last fall. Making sure I was pulling the correct plant out of the ghetto, I CAREFULLY read the label this time and saw "CL Perle d'Or" (I had thought it was "Ch Perle d'Or" -- definitely time for new glasses!).

It sounds as if the climber is tall but not outrageous, so maybe it won't be like dealing with some MAC-type monster (enough of those around here!). If it stays around 10' - 12', I can deal with that.

Added note on the Strybing "CL Perle d'Or": While searching for more info, I came across the delightful account written by James Delahanty and Kim Rupert in an HMF ezine article (link below). Look forward to seeing if this really is as labelled or (maybe greater odds) Climbing Yellow Sweetheart!

The only evidence from the plant itself right now is that it is totally thornless and the few old leaves still on it look as if they were somewhat glossy -- attributes of either variety, apparently. Time will tell...

Err ... I photographed all of the roses in Carol Aguilar's garden, and if I look hard enough, I can probably find those files.

The 'Climbing Yellow Sweetheart' from that garden does appear to be 'Climbing Yellow Sweetheart,' and is not by any stretch 'Perle d'Or.

Drat! I do not need any more climbing roses, but I looked on HMF, and Kim's pictures of Cl Yellow Sweetheart are gorgeous - and it is thornless, and hybridized by Ralph Moore, and it says it has a "strong fragrance"! I was sure it would not be available in commerce, but HMF says that you can buy it from RVR - I think I am doomed.

Consider Phyllis Bide.

Closer examination has me backtracking on "totally thornless" - there are actually a total of 5 small, curved thorns near the bottom of the plant. Rosefolly, just how thorny are your Perle d'Or plants? HMF says, "Short, thornless (or almost)." We know the "short" adjective isn't so applicable in our area; is "thornless (or almost)" also a bit of an understatement? HMF says "thornless (or almost)" about Climbing Yellow Sweetheart, too.

Jackie, will definitely post a photo when it blooms; hopefully it will settle the question. I'm with you on Climbing Yellow Sweetheart -- I wouldn't be devastated if it turned out to be that!

Phyllis Bide is more thorny than this plant, as I recollect, Rinaldo, but she has similar coloring and definitely is "around", so could be a possibility.

Update: The Strybing Arboretum plant I bought that was marked as "Cl. Perle d'Or" has bloomed and it does look like Perle d'Or (not Cl. Yellow Sweetheart or Phyllis Bide. This is a big deal because the climbing form is no longer in commerce in the U.S. Thanks to Kim's archive on HMF, I see that it was once sold by ROYAT).

Next benchmark: does it actually climb? As the plant is all of about 1' tall (note size of Bowles' black viola growing next to it, below), this may take a while to determine. Only 10 or 11 feet more to go! I will keep you posted.

Debbie - thanks so much for the update! I am really interested in finding out what your plant does - please keep us posted. As I said, in our neighborhood there are some old bushes of Perle d'Or that are 8 feet high, but look like bushes, not climbers - if yours gets taller than that (which I realize may take a few years), that would be amazing!
