Comments (16)I can attest to being "blown away" seeing Hamp's Perle d'Or in person last spring..absolutely stunning! I came home and had a serious talk with mine and I have to say, she took it to heart. I can see this one blooming outside the dining room window and she tickles me with the form of the bloom..so different....See MoreIs this Perle d'Or?
Comments (21)Jeri A front specimen tree (with label and all is little more than a dead trunk with a few green leaves on some dead branches here and there.) The back part of the property looks significantly different and better maintained than the historical front. It was supposed to be saved and preserved with quite a fight back in the 90's but it was left to crumble for decades prior. The trees noted had survived, the highway raised and built next to it was done in the 50's? Guessing any rose hedges were dozed then and are under the raised road bed. But a drive down to the back of the property might have something interesting. Same with a drive down the other side of the road, surely they would have had a nice view at the time I will try and do that tomorrow....See MoreReviews / photos of Perle d'Or?
Comments (15)Nik - yes, it is self supporting, as are all of the other ones around here I have seen (I have a baby which has been in the ground for 4 months, but it is only 2 feet tall so far). The one I posted a pic of is old - the main trunk looks to be at least 8 inches in diameter. The Perle d'Ors around here are all fairly upright, like this one, they do not sprawl out as a tea might. Oh, they hate to be hard pruned. An old one was growing happily along the fence line of a house near here when the house changed hands. The new owner pruned it severely, as if it was a HT, down to about 12 inches (from 6+ feet), and it almost died. It took 4 years before it fully recuperated and started blooming a lot again. Comments (10)You're Perle d'Or is absolutely lovely in every picture. I grew it once and it developed into a large shrub, and I never loved it. Being in a different climate and next to a hot pavement probably did not improve its appearance....See Moreozmelodye
