newbie first time post. albas on multiflora

Hi this is my first year growing roses. I live in zone 5 so ive been buying own root roses. But all the albas i wanted were sold out. So i ordered albas from palatine on multiflora to arrive in spring. What ive read is if i plant deep they can go own root is this true. And if so how deep? Thank you for any help

Palatine's roses grafted on multiflora are excellent. In the colder regions like you inhabit, always plant the graft (no matter what kind of graft) about 4-6 inches deep. That should protect the graft from freezing.

Do deep planted grafted roses go own root? Maybe or maybe not. If they do, it will probably take a long time. There is no guarantee on this practice.

But deep planted grafted roses are terrific in the northern regions, so I wouldn't worry about it one way or another. You have a good, healthy, and beautiful rose. That's cause for celebration, don't you think?

Thnx kate i just wanted to make sure they lived along time. I heard grafted roses didnt have a long life span. And did not get as full

Thanks for the replies everyone! I didn't sow into individual cups -- I just loaded the whole shebang up with dirt and sowed into the dirt. Some stuff I sowed HOS-style, some stuff (like sunflowers, larkspur, etc) I sowed in tiny rows that I made with a fingertip. Of course, as soon as I finished all my containers it started to rain here in Pittsburgh. I moved all of my containers onto a covered porch for the night because I didn't want to flood them so soon! I'm going to move them back out into the yard and the sun today. I had lots of condensation inside my containers so I know I did it right! I labeled my containers by duct taping a snack sized ziploc bag with the names written on a slice of paper. I don't know if that will hold up over the next few months so I will have to check frequently! I've read about the paint pens you guys use. BTW, making the soil was SO EASY! I'm so glad I didn't plunk down all that money for seed starting soil bags. Here they are about 4 dollars for 8 quarts, and with the amount of soil I used it would have been a small fortune. Just a big bale of peat, some compost, and the perlite and it looked almost the same as the MG stuff. I mixed it in a big bag and used the dishwashing liquid tip! Next time I think I would try the mushroom compost over the cow manure compost. Mine had a LOT of large chunks of wood and rocks and stuff. I wound up using only a very small amount. I guess I can use the leftovers out in the beds! Happy growing! Kara

Welcome, John. This is a great place to find out how specific daylilies perform. I have learned so much by being here. It is tough to be limited on space. This year will be a bummer for me because I don't have much room to put more daylilies unless I remove something else. What a dilemma! Hope you can post some pictures of your garden. My only concern on this is that button eye.. from my experience Great Maidens blush isnt as tight of a rose as this and the stamens show through... To my eye the bloom looks alot more like FÃ©licitÃ© Parmentier Than Great maidens blush... Does anyone else pick this up? Silverkelt

In many cases grafted roses are more vigorous than their own-root counterparts. I've found if you plant the bud union about 2 inches below soil line in many cases they will go own-root over time, depending on how easily a variety roots of course. Gallicas and other OGRs that have a propensity to sucker can be controlled by planting the bud union above the soil line because they will go own root the quickest. But in colder regions you would be safer to bury the bud union for all varieties so if the canes die-back in a harsh winter are more likely to recover.
