Moving Rose from Garden to Container

Hi:

Any advice would be helpful.

I currently have an Abraham Darby English rose that O absolutely love. I planted it last summer (08) and was thinking of training it as a climber. Unfortunately, it appears that I will be moving, and would prefer not to leave the plant behind.

The problem is this: I could be moving in a month, or I could be moving in the dead of winter. Obviously I cant transplant the rose in the dead of winter, and would need to do it right about now.

What do I need to do to move the bush from the ground to a container, and what should I do to keep it "alive" throughout the winter?

Worse cast scenario, I have to leave it behind and buy a new one when I get settled. However, I would prefer not to.

If you are in a part of zone 6 where the ground doesn't stay frozen for long, you certainly can transplant it in the dead of winter. Just bare-root it and protect the roots against temperatures below 20 (I'm ballparking) while it is out of the ground. If you didn't have a chance to prepare the soil, dig the rose up around April 1 and redo.

Surely your soil is not going to freeze much for the next month, so there is no hurry if you want to pot it up. I would wait for dormancy (in a month or so). Cut it back to manageable size, dump it in a pot with more garden soil, water heavily to settle. When temperatures fall below 20, bury the pot in a pile of leaves. Transplant to the new garden whenever the soil is workable.

The rose would have a good chance of surviving either way.

I couldn't handle seeing someone else growing any of my roses If it where me in your shoes Id do just about everything I could think of to bring em with me

It's a fine David Austin rose I'd grab several cuttings even though off season and give that a shot as well I'd get a big pot and semi grow / store it in my garage or basment in both locations of befor and after move. Then site prep and ready for planting in early to mid spring of the hopefully potted one with cuttings as a back up. As a YIKES it's middle Januray move time. I'd go with the bare root idea if I negleted to do the other mentioned ideas perhaps as last resort and wait that out too ( like the big pot idea)

I do tend to be an extremest with that in mind no one is going to give you bad advice.

If your selling your home it might be a good idea to know the new parties regarding the rose(s) they may want it to be there even if this person is left unkown to you cut a piece off from a blind and mark it with it's name in sharpie and let that hang somewhere on the cane(S)where it can be found by the new parties place at least 4 of them where they can be found and on back include the webb addie to here ( any sissor will do for blind cutting tags and bread twist ties )

Thank you all for your advice. I moved them this past weekend into the largest pots I could find. I don't think they are 50 gallons, maybe closer to 30. They still have plenty of room to grow. I drilled my own drainage holes and set the pots up on bricks so they can drain easily. I put them under my pecan tree until they recover so they can get some shade and have been keeping the watered. So far so good!

The reason you can't trust the volume of nursery pots, Jim, is that those black nursery containers are all "nominal" sizes. That means the volume of the pots is vaguely related to the stated gallon size. A "5 galllon" nursery can is 10.5 in. diameter and 12 in. tall. My online calculator says that is only 3.75 gallons if you pot 2 inches from the top of the pot. That isn't large enough for any rose past the first year or so if it puts on vigorous growth. The foot stomping is an old landscaper practice. It's just a cheap way of determining settlement without taking the time to water a plant in. I wouldn't do it. Water your plant in to settle the soil. I've seen people planting roses into dry potting soil. I wouldn't do it. Many potting soils have peat moss which sheds water once dry. Those of you in climates with steady rain year round may not have this problem, but in the desert West, once peat dries out, it takes a concerted effort to dampen it. I open the bag of soil, stick the hose in, fill it up and mix. Then I pot with dripping wet potting soil and also water it in. It's mud pies for grownups. It assures that the soil comes to the optimal height in the pot (about 2 inches down) and fills major air pockets. I unpot roses all the time and have never found an air pocket. I don't drop pots on purpose. Our summers are too hot to grow a lot of roses in pots well. We can't keep the roots cool enough through June and July. I overpot extensively. A 3 x 3 rose goes in an ornamental pot that is 22-24 inches high. I use various decorative pots from the big box store and always buy the biggest size. Why? They bring to rose up to height and look more in scale with a landscape. It's funny how a pot looks big in a store and miniature in the garden. Also, with those big pots I'm approaching the 15 gallon actual size I find any healthy rose needs. I do a seat of the pants volume-of-cone calculation to guesstimate the volume of the pot, taking into consideration the potting soil is probably 3 inches from the top of the container. Honestly, I'd try anything here (I live about 20 min's north of Richmond, VA). Our biggest rose problems are powdery mildew on things like dorothy perkins/7 sisters, black spot, and japanese beetles. I've grown New Dawn, Zepherine Doughin, lady banks, Red Fairy, Veilchenblu, Rose-Marie Viaud, 7 sisters, Dorothy Perkins, rosa rugosa, baby faurex, moss rose, tea roses, and austins... I've had decent luck with most. The worst were the DP/7 sis with the PM and the fact that they grew to kingdom come with all those prickles. If nothing else, just take a bunch of cuttings to bring with you wrapped in damp paper & root them here. Good luck!

This is great, noseometer, I’m excited for you! Personally, I think it depends on the variety - the vigor and mature size. If these AD are very well rooted, the roots filling the gallon cans, I would plant them right in the 22 in pots. By the end of the season, it should be a decent size. Even with a smaller variety like Sister Elizabeth, she was a small but well rooted 1 gallon plant and was a rounded 2 1/2 foot shrub by the end of the season and didn‘t look so odd. In the end, either option will likely be just fine. You’ll have to post pics of AD as he grows up!

Absolutely dig it up, cut it back, bareroot it and transplant it to a large pot and take it with you. We just did that with close to 1000 rose plants and haven't lost one yet.
