"I must admit that these images, at least in part, come from frequent visits to the lovely rose garden at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center on Hanley Road in Central Point.

So, the Master Gardeners who maintain that garden are the ones I consulted to get the best information on growing roses here in the Rogue Valley, because now is the best time to plant bare-root roses. Roses can be planted in the spring, too, but fall planting is very successful in this climate, as it gives them time to develop roots over the winter."

The problem for me in the SF Bay Area: where to get bare root roses in fall? It may be a good time to plant them, but you can't plant what you don't have.

Agree, I'd plant them if I could find them bare root. I do plant rooted cuttings in the fall and have great results in getting them over winter.

Well, there's a piece of breaking news. Nothing against the Master Gardeners program, but I've never known them to give out good rose advice, except for the two that are also members of our local rose society, and they ask one of the Consulting Rosarians what they should be telling people. They have so much to cover they don't have time to be rosarians too. We need to link up Consulting Rosarians with the Master Gardeners I guess, if we want to get our knowledge out to the general public.

I have several blooming. I cannot tell my best. Will probably know by Rememberence Day which are my best fall bloomers, because, they are the last ones I pick for the house and for a dinner I have that day. Then, unlike most people, I will prune all my roses, yes, the Real prune for next year. I have always been a nonconformist. Fall is the best time to prune, in my opinion for MY garden. It has worked out great up to now. I will NEVER say this is the RIGHT WAY, but it works best for me. From many years of experience. ....OK, so I will say why it is the right way for me. It is because we live on a hugely evergreen treed property. Absolutely no sun for months on end in the winter. Consequently, my roses stay more dormant than most. If I prune in the fall, then I do not have to prune off precious "very late" new growth in the Spring, hence, a much better start to the season. I know, I know, definitely not the norm, but "up-to-now" it has worked for me! Pauline.

I've hesitated to reply because I don't know! only want to sympathize with your dilemma. At our old house growing young roses up a bit in pots was basically a failure,because of lack of light, but here at the new house I can see that it's very different: plenty of morning sun and afternoon shade. So this fall I'm thinking to pot up all new roses,but just for one season. I, too, find growing roses in pots too much work and just can't keep up. Like Kes Z, I am much more concerned about losing roses to heat and drought (I'm in Italy, about a zone 8,but my garden has a south-western exposure, so it's protected from North winter winds, but subjected to terribly brutal summer sun). Still, I've always mounded/protected baby bare-root roses planted out in fall/winter, just in case. I guess in general I'd vote to plant them out in the ground,especially the larger ones,but I think I might protect them. One way that I've done this successfully is by using pieces of styrofoam-you know, those odd-shaped pieces that are used in packaging so many things? I break these up to smaller sizes, if necessary, andmake a sort of little corral around the canes of the rose,holding the pieces in place with stones,earth,whatever. Then I fill in the top a bit with other pieces,holding these in place with sticks,teepee-style,or use wine corks. I like this way of protecting because the materials are efficient insulators, but also sterile so bacteria and fungus aren't encouraged.You'd only mount these potective teepees once the temperature really drop.If some are still very, very tiny, you could keep those few in their pots.

I've planted in the spring and fall and I think spring works better. I think sometimes planting in the fall is too much of a shock. You take a plant grown in a warm nursery and then plunge it in the ground and then it quickly gets hit with cold temps and is forced to hibernate. The only advantage to fall planting is the roots grow some over the winter, so in the spring they're better established than the same plant planted in the spring. But the death rate seems higher if planted in the fall. At least that's my experience.

This makes me wonder: do "own root" roses come available "bare root"????

I've got 200+ roses, and all except a few before I knew better are "own root" and came in "bands", so I'm just curious....

Jackson and Perkins sells them that way (and ships them that way) and they likely also supply those ownroot bareroots to many other resellers, so I'd guess that local nurseries, at least some of them, are also carrying them that way. But you'd have to ask/read the labels to know for sure that they aren't grafts (if you don't want grafts).

If I were a rose, I'd prefer living continually in dirt to going bare. Shipping weight is a consideration, of course, and you might prefer to start out with larger plants. But Antique Rose Emporium's 2-gallon size plants can take off pretty quickly, if you are willing to pay a few dollars more for shipping that much weight.

It was mostly idle curiosity. Until this year all of my roses have come from Vintage Gardens, since they used to have their retail outlet just a few miles from my house, and after I retired I worked a few seasons there. This year I placed an order with them, one with Cliff at Euro Desert and one -- just now -- at Burlington.

I might have to go another route if my lust for an own root Hot Cocoa persists; currently I can only seem to source it in a gallon, and it grieves me to pay shipping on gallons when I know I can grow it up just as easily on my own....:-))))

I'm in northern Oregon and frequently plant bands in the fall. Our nice wet winters usually result in strong spring plants

When I send own root roses of any size, unless instructed otherwise, I remove the pot and some of the soil and ship partially bare root. It does save on shipping costs. Ashdown Roses had begun to ship that way before they went out of business.
