Grandma's Yellow Rose - Your Opinions, Please

I purchased a Grandma's Yellow Rose (formerly known as Nacogdoches) this last weekend and I don't want to plant it until I hear from others who have grown this rose. Is it truly a superstar? How tall and wide will it grow?

Any information regarding your experience with this rose is appreciated.

Well, I alternately love and hate this rose! When it blooms, it has very nice HT type blooms (no fragrance), but I don't care for the shrub shape.......and it BS's pretty badly (like most everything else here). It is also extremely thorny! Mine was planted in the yard and I was going to get rid of it so I dug it up - very rudely - and stuck it in a pot, mostly because I felt badly about digging it up. It then proceeded to put out beautiful new growth and a flush of blooms and it has been in the pot ever since.

Thanks for the information and the photo, Lynn. I had one other person tell me pretty much what you did about this rose. She told me she likes the fact that it is a heavy bloomer, but is not particularly happy with the plant itself. She thinks it may be best to avoid a prominent location since it is not a particularly attractive bush.

The black poop things look like caterpillar poop. Caterpillars are best controlled by hand picking (wear gloves) or by spraying BT, which won't harm anything except caterpillars. BT can be sprayed on food, so it's quite safe, and will not harm bees or beneficial insects. They look a little sunburnt to me, but relatively okay otherwise. Best to stick your fingers around in the soil and see if it is moist enough. If the soil feels cool to your fingers, then there is some moisture in the soil (not necessarily enough, but some). At the same time, don't drown them (soil is pure mud). Some of those seem planted a little close to the home. A rose can get 5 or 6 feet wide--my Belinda's Dreams are wider than that. If a plant gets 6 feet wide, then it needs to be planted at least 3 feet from the house--more being better, so a person can get between it and the house if necessary for maintenance to the home (or plant). I would hold off on fertilizer until the plants are a little more established, since they are a bit toasted. Your weather is already warm, which can be stressful for a small young plant trying to establish itself. If the temperatures really shoot up in the next few weeks, some temporary shade will reduce stress.

Hey, last weekend I went to Heirloom and saw Star of the Nile. Because they are a no-spray garden, one can see how the roses truly perform at least here in the moist Willamette Valley of Oregon. To me the Star of the Nile looked best in a grouping. In one area of the garden, they had at least six (maybe more) and they looked beautiful. There was some BS, but not too badly and the blooms were striking to me. It is one of the most attractive Clements roses (the Impressionist is to die for, however). Cannot speak of its hardiness for your area, but the folks at Heirloom are wonderfully helpful about questions such as this. I have Sharifa Asma, its first year for me on original root stock from David Austin. It is still pretty small. I do think that it is a beautiful rose with a wonderful fragrance. But the blooms do not last for me. Maybe that will change as it gets older. I also got Tamora this year and must say that it is wonderful--more of an apricot color, beautiful blooms, great fragrance and repeats quickly which is an issue for me and the Austins. You might consider it if you don't have it. William Shakespeare 2000 was also at Heirloom and its blooms were beautiful, but the plant had lost most of its leaves. You might consider Braveheart, which is another Clements rose, is a beautiful red and its blooms last a long time even cut and in a vase (another issue for me and the Austins). It is the sport of an Austin, The Dark Lady and another rose, Tamango. Not sure on the hardiness, however. Just a thought. Good luck in finding out about the others. CJ

Tamora is definitely shorter, mine hasn't gotten over 3'. Molineux and Pat Austin will be shorter than Abe and GC. All have great fragrance, you will really love Abe, he is gorgeous. (Randy, maybe that should be your next Austin!) I just planted GC this spring and so far so good but I don't have enough experience to comment on that one. I call Molineux my "color show" rose because it is not just yellow but many shades of apricot, even a little pink thrown in there as the flower fades/depending on the season. Pat Austin is lovely too.

Lou, I have had one Republic of Texas for about a year now.......got it from ARE last year. It is a pretty compact plant so far. I might have snipped a couple of errant branches off recently but didn't do any pruning to speak of. Mine did bloom last year and I am, naturally, expecting a bigger show this year. I didn't find that the flowers were as bright a yellow as the picture in the ARE catalog but we'll see what happens this time around. I don't recall any problems with disease; it may have gotten a spot or two of BS but that was about it. It seems to be a good little plant to interplant with - nothing spectacular about it but a really nice supporting player. Mine is planted in front of, believe or not, a Vielchenblau rambler and they seem quite happy together!

I prefer the original name Nacogdoches as that is where it was found [I live 30 minutes from Nacogdoches]. It is a vibrant, nonfading yellow that looks good with other colors and blooms alot, remaining healthy. I dont notice the shape of the bush because it seems to be always in bloom. Just bought Shockwave which seems to be the same color and it will be interesting to compare the two.

This rose never fails to attract attention in my garden. The yellow is vibrant, and it contrasts nicely with the foliage. Because of this, it will make whatever location it's in a 'prominent' location.

The bush is kinda round-ish and squatty ... but I can forgive this because of all the flowers.
