Gregory - so nice of you to do this! When we sold my deceased mother-in-law's house, the new owners bulldozed the entire 1/2 acre garden - they saved only 2 huge heritage trees, a live oak and a Giant Sequoia, and one ancient apple tree and one fig. The new garden has not been put in yet - they are very green - they are talking about olive trees, lavender, and lots of permeable hardscape & South African bulbs.

I am sure it will look fine - they have good taste and are sparing no expense, but it will not be as beautiful or floriferous.

One day I was walking by the house just before the garden was eliminated, and they were there, and kindly said that our family was welcome to dig up any of the plants (about 50 roses, dozens of rhododendrons & azaleas, thousands of iris, Japanese quinze, etc. etc).

Unfortunately, it turned out that the bulldozers were showing up the next day, so we did not have time to do anything. Great that you have the time & opportunity to gift your plants!

Thanks for your kind response, Jackie. Yes, half of these roses will most likely be bulldozed by the end of October unless a new home is found for them. It would be really sad to see that happen. Am hoping to find new homes for them all, one way or another.

Oh I wish I could come get some of those lovelies! How sad that you have to leave them behind.
