Which Ashdown rose?

I am planning to buy a rose or two from Ashdown and donate it to my local garden club for their auction. There are some members that like roses, and some others that might want to try one. They know I grow roses without spraying and I want to donate one or two that will do well without it in the humid southeast.

Which Ashdown rose would you recommend for a brand new rose gardener who wanted to try a no spray rose - something on the small side, I would think.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help, I need to get it ordered pretty soon.

I am no expert, but I did see on an earlier thread that the Delbard rose Madame Bovary has been doing quite well in a no spray garden. One good thing about the Delbard roses are they have a wonderful and usually strong scent. Or you may just want to call them and ask for recommendations.

Good luck and what a great way to help introduce others to roses.

Caroline, Ashdown is a fantastic rose place but have you been to Petals from the Past which is only a few miles from where you live? I think you will be pleasantly surprised to see PFTP. It is located halfway between Birmingham and Montgomery, off I-65 at exit 219. If you have not been there you have missed one of the wonders of the world (or at least in Alabama's world). Go ahead and buy your rose from Ashdown but make the trip. You will not regret it. The gardens are so pretty, so well designed, well kept, immaculate and impeccably groomed, well stocked and the customer service is fantastic. I am really surprised you have not been there. Every time I go in summer, there are always people from (not only Alabama), but Georgia, Tennessee and Florida there shopping for plants. Of course, you have to stop off at Peach Park exit 205 for the world's best Chilton County peaches and peach pies made by the little ladies who live nearby.

I've seen Himmelsauge on a pillar at Anne Belovich's garden and it's stunning. She wrote an article for the American Rose Society's OGR & Shrub Journal last year talking about differentiating between Himmelsauge and Russelliana. Did you know it means "Eye of Heaven?" American Pillar is also a beauty and I just gave a stunner of a 5-gallon Albertine from Rogue Valley Roses to a dear clematis friend. I'm not really familiar with Juranville, but I don't think you can go wrong with your choices. Sue

kentstar, Soil sickness is a problem in Europe but not so much here. If you amend the soil with an organic such as compost or horse manure, you should never experience any trouble planting in the soil where another rose was planted. Regarding holding over winter in an unheated shed, I hold potted roses overwinter in an unheated greenhouse where temperatures at night get almost as cold as outdoors. The soil in the pots freezes solid. Sun coming through the plastic during the day warms it up considerabily. My potted roses begin to bud out in mid to late February and I prune them in early March, 1 1/2 months before I prune outside. Unheated shed stored potted roses would react similar except they would thaw out slower because they won't get the heat from the sun. It would probably be better for them. The benefit of being in an unheated shed, garage, or greenhouse is they aren't exposed to the drying winds, ice, and animal damage. A shovelfull of snow on each pot occassionally supplies any moisture they need. This is important as preventing the soil from drying out is important.

The last thing I expected when I logged-on this afternoon was to learn of this unfortunate turn of events. Quite a number of roses in my garden, as well as roses I've bought as gifts for friends, came from Ashdown. I'm sure most of us here were pulling for the Ashdown folks to survive the virtual parade of stressors they've had to deal with in the last few years. Here's wishing only the best for the Ashdown crew and their terrific collection of roses. Have to admit, though, that I was a bit nonplussed as I read through the list of available sale roses and found several that had long since been added by email to my 'wish list' at Ashdown. These were roses that I'd gladly have paid full price for. Today, of course, all of those have already sold out. Come to think of it, I never once heard from Ashdown about any rose on my 'wish list'. It was a good concept; too bad it seems not to have worked.

Thanks for the suggestion to call them. I will, but wanted to get ya'll thoughts as well.

Madame Bovary was beautiful, but I'm thinking something smaller would be better. Does anyone have any other suggestions of what they've really liked in their garden? Definitely fragrant, though. thanks for any thoughts.

Something small, fragrant and no spray? It's not an antique but perhaps Floral Fairytale? But i am no real help to you-don't grow it myself.

Now that St. Ethelsberg looks wonderful but HMF doesn't even hint at disease resistance, hmmm...

Every time I see Trish she raves about J.C. Thornton. She tells me it is a bloom machine. I almost picked one up this past Saturday but then she started talking nice about Blumenschmidt so that one followed me home.

I'd ask her...she knows!

According to the folks in Europe St Ethelburga is very disease resistant.

I just read my email today and Ashdown has a few more that you might condsider as they both are not big. You might what to look at the Kordes rose Cubana as they said it is very hardy and quite stunning.

Just a thought as you are thinking of smaller roses.

I know I am adding Cubana to my list as well as one or two of the Delbard Mini-Floras.

I bought Lion's Rose above two springs ago along with Floral Fairy Tale aka Sangerhausen Jubilee. Both roses have remained clean this year in my no spray garden. Lion's rose is about 4.5 feet and Sangerhausen is about 2 feet. The rose midge in my garden don't prevent LR from blooming but I've seen very few on SJ because of the midge.

I bought both from Ashdown.

Arethusa. Healthy, fragrant, blooms all the time :-)

Oh yes, I have to agree with Carol. Until RRD claimed my Arethusa, it was always in bloom and a really clean rose.

Lion's Rose and SJ are both good moderns, but for a small antique, you cannot beat Arethusa.

Sorry for waiting so long to respond, ya'll. I've just had a hard time trying to decide! I finally ordered a Sweet Emely for the auction rose, one of the Kordes ADR's. Very small, pink floribunda. I finally decided on the Kordes rather than Arethusa because I thought they might be more willing to try a pink than an apricot.

I'm also trying some of them for myself, Golden Fairytale, Innocencia and Sweet Emely. It's so hard when you want at least one of everything and three of a lot of them.
