Rose grafting question

I live in the southern tip of south fla.and everyone here recommends grafting roses on Fortuniana stock

1. Is Fortuniana an OGR?

2. How does one go about grafting another rose unto them? (step-by-step please, I have never grown a rose before).

3. Is it taboo to graft a modern bush rose unto an OGR?

'Fortuniana' is, indeed, an OGR. And yes, you can graft virtually any rose onto any other rose. I've never found a rose that could not be grafted to 'Fortuniana'.

As for methods, I could email you a Powerpoint presentation on the topic, but the real way to learn is to watch an expert, then have that person coach you.

I'm not clear on whether you are looking to try grafting roses or you just want to buy roses that are grafted on Fortuniana. You can purchase them already grafted. I believe Cool Roses is still around, as is K&M Nursery (Mr. Mills, phone number is (601) 648-2908, no web), Johnny Becnel Show Roses, 337-394-5662, Nelson's in Florida.

In your zone the purpose of planting the graft below the ground is winter protection. If you plant the graft 4 to 6 inches under the soil if the rose dies back in winter all the way to the soil you will not lose the graft and have the root stock take over. Otherwise you will need to protect the graft for winter or take the chance of losing your rose. If the rose is planted well, in a good spot with good soil and plenty of sun, and well cared for with water and fertilizer it should be fine. It's very hard to determine exactly when a rose will bloom or how long it will take a rose to bloom. It depends on each variety. For exhibition purposes sometimes we'll keep records of how long a particular variety takes to cycle and prune accordingly before a show. It's usually somewhere between 6 & 8 weeks before a show. Then we just hope that the roses will bloom at just the right time. Sometimes it works but not always. There are no guarantees.

Thank you Dax. This was about my third year in trying to propagate this J. virginiana. The first year I tried strong rooting hormone on cuttings, that failed. Second year I tried grafting with a knife (not razor sharp, just sharp) and doing the bag method except I did not let them breath, those all failed (quick), Spider mite infestation on the root stalks, and the knife not being razor sharp was likely the main causes for a quick death. Third year (this year) The scions seemed green for a long time in the humidity chamber after grafting, but I think that was just because the humidity preserved the chlorophyll even though the scions where getting little to no water uptake from the root stalk (guessing). The only ones to eventually grow a tiny bit and did not turn brown for the longest time, were the ones I had half in a jar of water (approach grafts), and they actually grew, but after I took the "graft" out of the humidity and removed the jar the tender new growth quickly shrived up and the last couple of scions I had died. I don't know if this guess is true or not, But I've been guessing (and hoping) the the only reason they failed is because I got the scions off the parent tree as the tree was coming out of dormancy in February (pollen cones on the tree where large and swollen, and just about to burst open). A very warm winter did not help either (breaking dormancy even earlier than typical.) So perhaps the scions did not have time to heal before the water started to transpire out of the foliage of the scions and juices flowing in the scions, thus a very poor graft union that was very susceptible to even tiny stresses in the aftercare (in other words: little to no water and nutrient uptake for the scions). Does this sound likely or not, (I don't mind if you disagree with what I said above, I want to learn as much as possible, so you can tell how you think about it). This time I want to get the scions in the dead of winter (in January). Do you think bagging the grafts could be better than the humidity chamber? Bagging them would be more work and I worry about spider mites, but I don't mind to do what ever it takes to get a successful cone of it, I'll do it. I would even spend hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars to graft/clone it successfully. lol You probably know how it is for me, ones favorite plant/tree of a plant enthusiast is kind of like a very close family pet.

Meredith has some good advice. It might be easier to use what they call the "layering" method to root a cane and then cut it off. You'll have a much better success rate because the mother plant will still be feeding the cane while the section that's under the soil will put out roots. I recommend what Meredith says. Jerri has some great advice too, but you'd have to dig up the rose or build a raised area around it in order to get it deeper into the ground once its planted. If the rose is newly planted and sill easy to move (has not yet set out delicate feeder roots, within a week) you can do that. If not, try rooting it using the layering method above.

Should be okay, a graft is a graft. One cultivar may take over eventually, but that could happen whether the bud union is above or below ground.

Diane, I bought a rose for the first time this year and I have read that it will slowly decline here in fla. So I wanted to prevent this by grafting branches unto fortuniana. Also I saw a rose that was really spectacular online but unfortunately was a modern bush rose which also decline in our climate. I still wanted to get If I could graft it onto fortuniana. I will check out the sites you suggested. what season would be the best time to order roses? should grafting happen in the spring or the fall. In florida there is only a 10 - 20 degree difference between spring, fall and winter on average. Obviously shorter days in the fall and winter.

Cool roses is till around and they do have both OGRs and moderns grafted on fortuniana. K&M had a few old roses on fort in the past but I think now they have only moderns.

I suggest you contact them and ask when they start shipping.

The places I mentioned sell roses that are grafted on Fortuniana rootstock. That's why I asked. Most people who need Fort. rootstock buy plants that are already grafted, they don't graft themselves. But, grafting is a fun hobby for many, worth a try if you cannot find the varieties that you want.

I endevearoed this grafting process on R. fortuniana, and it is not for the impatient or easily discouraged rosarian. I had some successes but patience and try, try, try... in other words, "practice makes perfect." It was much cheaper for me to buy them grafted. :)
