The space I have it planned for gets quite windy. Secondly, I will definitely need to find a new place for Memorial Day if it gets 6-8 feet so I am glad you mentioned it. Also, I was under the impression that Cherry Parfait and Fire & Ice are the same rose (HMF has the names linked I believe). Are the two you mention very different? I currently have Fire & Ice ordered and I see Regan lists them seperately. Odd. Thank you for the tip of Dublin Bay! I might plant a low one in front of it to cover the bottom. Kate, Regarding my list, I am sure I will be on here complaining after spring planting but the catalogs kept on coming! Thankfully I started digging holes in the fall and got through some, now just need to watch the dogs out in the yard with the snow cover so they don't accidently fall in! Thank you for the thorn tip on Elina, will need to stick her in the back so I can prune things in front without getting stuck. Also glad you mentioned WS2000 - I definitely did not have it planned for a 6ft wide spot! Doodles, I tried to stagger all of my deliveries (I have ordered from Palatine, Regan, DA, Chamblees, RVR, Heirloom, and RU) and pretty much don't plan on sleeping, eating, or bathing until I am done (although if this goes like my 2013 resolution, I am in trouble..). You and I both have a lot of work to do! Michael, I was way off for Tess. I assumed the HMF listing of 3'-8' would mean it would be closer to 3' in my zone so it definitely gets moved! Thank you! I was spacing 36" on average so most of these plans should work Lsst, when you say C.Marlowe has a delicate look does that mean you would suggest moving it toward the front of a bed to enjoy it versus further back? I like climbing Aloha, technically not an heirloom yet. But she is lovely pink, fragrant, fully hardy in Zone 5, reaches over 6 feet tall in good years. Requires no special pampering. I started mine from a cutting andhave started several more from the mother plant for different locations. Has some repeat bloom after the June flush. Good luck ML

Wow wow wow! Thanks everybody for all the suggestions... and the gorgeous pictures! I'll research all the strains mentioned, although just a reminder that I'm in Maryland where BS seems to be extra bad (I havent heard of a few of these before, which makes me wonder whether they do well around here). Btw, in searching this site's archives I did find a list that "Olga" posted a couple of years ago, which included both New Dawn and Awakening as ones which do pretty well around here. I'd welcome further thoughts, though! As to that picket fence, Betty - I wish I could paint it or something but, alas, it's not mine - that's the neighbours house (we're on a hill that direction, thus their grade is about 5-7ft higher than ours). REally, all I can hope to do is grow over it :) Mandi, as for bushy: I realise it will take some time - I'm assuming (hoping?) that over the next 4-5 years the plants I put in now will do their thing and be covering up that fence a little more each year. If the canes want to grow up, what happens if you peg them over as they get long enough, so they spread out and mound a bit more? To add to my questions: what about Mermaid? Another weed-riddled and miserable corner (jungle!) along the back fence is being cleared as we speak (I gave up on that one and got some college lads with chainsaws and better heat tolerance than I have to come and do it for me). A huge mounding mass of something I LIKE and that would hopefully over time compete with the brush that seems to want to grow there would be awesome. I saw some pictures of Mermaid (also on Olga's list as doing quite well in these parts) and it got me to thinking about a way of making that ugly corner prettier but relatively easy to maintain..... :) Thank you everybody SO SO MUCH! So I'm answering this as if I know anything about climbers. Almost none of my attempts have worked well. But here's what I learned. In order to be a great climber I believe they need to have surviving cane. Something about that surviving cane that produces more blooming laterals in the following years. I'm not sure if I'm right or even how to explain it but my climbers were always regrowing instead of building a structure. Does that make since? Just seems as if they need to be hardier than zone5 for me if they were going to be any thing more than a giant shrub. Maybe even zone3. Just clobber me with a wet noodle if I'm way off base.
