what's your best rose?
Comments (36)I love the flowers and fragrance of Young Lycidas, and it IS one of my favorite roses --- but I do struggle with its growth habit. It sends up long (very) long skinny canes that cannot support the weight of the flowers. So I have to pick the flowers up off the ground (very nearly) to see them or to take in their wonderful fragrance. I was going to give it away last year and we were in my yard to dig it out for my friend when a nearby redwood tree root made the digging too much of a struggle. So I kept it after all, and I'm glad I did. But I wish I could figure out a way to get the canes to fatten up so they would support the flowers. Other than Young Lycidas I have two other very favorite roses: Matangi and Lady Emma Hamilton. Matangi is one of the so-called Painted Roses and it has so many virtues -- disease free in my garden, deep green glossy leaves, never out of bloom, super light-up-the-landscape last forever blooms, big fat generous hips, neat bushy habit. If it has a fault, I suppose I will have to admit it lacks fragrance. Lady Emma is one of David Austin's and aside from its beautiful flower and wonderful fragrance, I am quite taken with its foliage color which is hard to describe but the leaves are flushed with a sort of brownish burgundy which is a perfect color blend for the flowers. The very attractive foliage persists all winter for me until the new leaves in spring force the old ones to drop. I welcome its shorter size, and it is very full and bushy. And healthy....See MoreYour best striped or bi-color rose
Comments (41)Nessdizzle, you will love Granada. I bought three body bags, also at Lowes, 3 years ago, and they have gone bonkers. Never boring! Here's one -- I have to put in a word for "Daring Spirit", a 2015 J&P which was my mother's day present last year. Here it is along with some Oklahomas:Actually the top reds are Okalahoma, the other is Don Juan. Daring Spirit is healthy, vigorous, and disease free so far (in zone 10a/20), The blooms are huge and very, very fragrant -- old-rose cold-cream sort of fragrance. Daring Spirit's blooms last for days indoors. A keeper! Then there's Chihuly:Just starting its third year, this rose was stingy with blooms the first two years, but this year I had a nice first flush and a second one looksdue in a couple of weeks. Hope it's about to "leap." I just love stripes. I'm a slavish devotee of bethfromnorcal's amazing collection. Next year -- "Red Intuition" or bust!...See MoreWhat are your best growing "weird color" roses?
Comments (73)If you grow Blue for You, allow it to set self seeds and raise seedlings. Lavender Crush looks very much like what many Blue for You self seedlings mature into. I've raised many just to see "what if" and most have matured into mauve shades, varying from almost white to very dark. Most are semi double to double and all are very vigorous and very well scented. If you check out some of Blue for You's offspring on HMF, they are very likely self seedlings as they very much resemble what self set seed produce. And, Blue for You (and the seedlings I have tried) all root very easily, grow well own root and seedlings should be free from RMV and have made useful root stocks for me, including 3' - 4' long whips for standards. Just a suggestion for anyone interested in playing......See Morebest striped rose
Comments (47)bump this thread up. I'm looking for info. on Brocelliande as to the scent, and how long it will survive zone 5 winter as own-root. Thank you. Neil Diamond is VERY WIMPY as own-root in zone 5, gave a few blooms per tiny bush, then died after a few zone 5 winters. In contrast, my neighbor had a very vigorous Rock & roll (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) that gave prettier blooms plus nicer scent than Neil Diamond. How's Rock & roll vigor as own-root? Thank you. Rock & Roll scent is way better than Neil Diamond (fleeting scent that's gone fast in vase) & very tiny as own-root, see below in my zone 5 garden:...See Moreleezen4u
