First thing is that the term 'disease resistant' is overused. It really depends on your climate and even the weather of the moment.

But if you want to have the roses disease free, you can spray them every 3 weeks or so with Bayer Advanced Disease control. Since you only have 3 you can just mix it up in a spray bottle and spray the bushes. It will stop the black spot that hasn't gone too far yet and if used regularly will prevent it.

I'm not sure about scales, I'll have to do some research. But I'm sure someone here will know all about it.

Disease resistance doesn't necessarily mean that a rose won't get black spot. Some areas (I'm not sure where you are) have very high black spot pressure. I'd start spraying with a fungicide. I use Bayer Disease Control and spray every week when I have a rose with black spot. The roses may lose most of their leaves but they'll grow back once you get the black spot under control.

Canes do sometimes fall off in high wind or when they get stepped on. It's okay, they grow back.

I don't have scales here so I can't help with that.

If you decide you don't want to spray or that the roses are too much trouble, there are more disease resistant roses that you can plant. Where you are will determine what type of roses will do well there.

When I first noticed the black spot I started spraying with a fungicide but it was organic, I'm guessing sometimes that does not help. I looked at my roses again today and realized that the main stem on both bushes has become extremely thorny and the leaves are outlined in red. Does this mean it has spread to far?

Thank you both so much for your advice. I am going to give it another go with these two. If I brought them back once, I can do it again. Hopefully, (fingers crossed) they will bounce back next year with all the care I'll be giving them the rest of this year.

"Rose Diseases"

There is a lot of information on organic sprays, but once you have blackspot, it probably will not do any good. If you want to stop it now, you'll have to go with the Bayer.

Thorniness is relative to each rose. Some have almost no thorns, some have many. Also, most new foliage is reddish in color. It's good that you are getting new growth, that means your roses are healthy and growing.

It would be better if you could post pictures. That's the best way to id diseases.

I suspect your canes had canker, possibly encouraged by the warm, humid conditions inside a rose cone. I'm in a much different zone, but I would make the following suggestions: 1) Don't use rose cones. 2) When the leaf buds first start to expand in early spring, prune each cane down just far enough to remove all signs of canker and winter-damaged wood, the cut surface on the canes should be white with no brown centers. Doing this prevents lots of problems later when the winter-damaged wood fails because it cannot support new growth or the canker infection starts to spread. 3)From the looks of your plants, the bud union is several inches below the surface and your plants may very well be on their own roots with no need to worry about suckers from a rootstock. If suckers do become a problem, it's often because the damaged or infected wood wasn't pruned away properly in early spring.

We will need to know where you live (approximate, like "central NJ") so that people in your area can give the best advice.

Next, "disease resistant" is a term that does not mean a thing where hybrid teas are concerned if you area has any amount of humidity. You have blackspot. The problem with blackspot is that once you have an active infection, it is harder to clean up. Left untreated, the disease interferes with photosynthesis, the leaves turn yellow and fall off. You need healthy leaves to have a healthy plant.

You can start with a fungicide like Bayer Advanced Disease Control for Roses, Flowers and Shrubs. You will need to spray it once every 7 days through October (at least in my borderline zone 7 that's when folks usually stop spraying). Next year, you will start treatment in late winter (early April) when you do your main pruning (when the forsythia is in bloom) and continue treatment as per the product label throughout the growing season.

Once the blackspots appear they will not disappear. You are trying to control the outbreak from spreading to the new leaves.

You do not need rose cones in your area for the winter. You are asking for another fungal disease called "canker", which causes the canes to die off. And yes, canes can "just fall off" but there had to be a reason, canker or insect damage or some mechanical reason or wilt of some kind.

Yes, horticultural oil for scale. Make sure that it is scale.

Another thing to know is that many roses "shut down" production when it gets really hot. They will continue to grow roots when given plenty of water, but almost no top growth. In my area, the best "flushes" of blooms are in late spring and late summer/early fall. Roses with beautiful, full, blooms in early June will have teeny little blooms, if any, in early July. So, just because your plant didn't look like it was growing does not mean that it wasn't.

I live in College Park, MD. I know I said "rose cone" but I thought that is what they call it even if it is made from chicken wire. That is what I had around my roses, it was enough to let air through but not too much cold. It's a shame I did that because a book said so, but because of my lack of knowledge in this area I went on what the AHS wrote about taking care of hybrid teas in my zone. Anyway, my husband told me that he noticed things with the roses years before I decided to tend to them. I had no idea that they shut down in heat, that is probably one of the thousands of details books cannot tell you.

Now that I went to the link you posted, I don't think it was scale. I am going to do what you wrote because you are in my zone and you really know what you are talking about. Thank you so much!

I just realized that last year for the littlest one there was a cane that looked exactly like the one from the link below and covered the whole cane (was a about 1ft and 1/2 tall) all the way down to just before the root base. I read in the book about Roses that I got from the library that I should prune it immediately. I'm guessing that was a mistake.
