Photo's Of Roses That Captivate---Part I

There are some great photo's, of roses, that have totally

captivated me on this site. I would like to discuss with

you all, why they thrill me. I love so many roses that are

shown on this forum, but obviously, I'm not going to be

getting them all, but I love looking at their extraordinary

beauty when you all post photo's. So for now, these eight

will be featured. I hope you enjoy them with me.

(And please excuse my corny poetry here. Just having fun).

This photo of Eden is from Cupshaped_roses.

This rose looks sensuous, it looks sexy, it's very much

a woman. Look at the green buds.

"Eden is a rose that one can't forget,

She belongs at court, with Marie Antoinette".

This photo of Lillian Austin is from Niecey.

The beauty of Llllian, captured in a photograph.

Look at how warm pink can be and ruffley.

"Lillian, Lillian, a rose most fair,

Lillian, Lillian, your beauty I share".

This photo of Amber Queen is from Moodyblue.

I love how this looks like Butterscotch candy to

me. And how I just want to grab this rose.

"She is a beauty, this Amber Queen,

Making it possible to live a sweet dream".

This photo of Disneyland is from Hoovb.

Look at this wild ride. I want to jump on!

Can you believe the shock of color?

"The colors are wild, now my heart's asunder,

Disneyland, fills my mind with wonder".

This photo of Mary Rose is from Aprille.

This is one of the best Mary Rose photo's

out there. It belongs in the David Austin

catalog.

"Mary, Mary, your not that contrary,

I love all your lilac passion, Mary".

This photo of Abraham Darby is from Moodyblue.

Just look at all those ruffles and the coloring

here. Very nice to capture it's real beauty.

Glad he's an Abraham and not a Harvey".

This photo of Brass Band is from Peachiekean.

What a stunning rose this must be to have. I think

it is dramatic in it's sunny beauty.

This photo of Julie Link is from Lesdvs9.

This rose has charm and great coral coloring. I

have never seen it, 'till Leslie posted it. I

hope all is well with her. She lost her golden

lab due to bad pet food that was talked about in

the news. Heartbreaking. She has not posted lately,

so I wish her the best. She has some of the best

rose pics out there.

What a wonderful thread/post, Devon! I have never really seen Amber Queen in a photo like this, and Brass Band is fantastic...think your reposting of Moodyblue and Peachiekeen's photos is making me reconsider them! All the photos are terrific...I almost thought Abe Darby was Polka, it is so ruffled! :0) Phyl

I'm sure some of our found roses are self seedlings which volunteered somewhere. Rose seeds have long been available commercially, and particularly Chinas and "Fairy Roses" were distributed as seeds. R. Xanthina was brought to the US by Meyer (of Meyer Lemon fame) as seeds and raised once here. He found both single and double forms from those seeds. Slater's Crimson China, among others, was sent out as seed. It is very successful as a self seeder, too. Any wonder why there are so many variations, all identified as Slater's Crimson China? If "grandma" planted some seeds, or some came up in her garden, of course only the most vigorous, healthiest would have been selected to maintain. Those would likely have been the ones relatives passed around and even planted in the family plots. Often, selfs resemble the parents quite closely. Not exactly, but close enough for someone to look at them and proclaim they are this, or that variety. Grow them side by side and you'll see differences. Micro sports also occur all the time, altering basic traits just enough to change the rose so it's no longer the original. You might find a less, or more, double mutation. Take a look at Awakening and New Dawn. They COULD be mistaken for the same rose if you didn't know one or the other well enough, but they aren't the SAME rose. Kim

Hi Linsul I agree, the first rose looks like transplant shock (messed up rooot system) or it could be too much fertilizer of some sort (burned roots). Either way, it is all about keeping the soil wet, and protect the plant during the hours of the day when the sun is at it's harshest. Some kind of semitransparent fiber cloth is often used to protect, it's easily available. Roses (plants in general really) grown in green houses get this too when they are suddenly planted outside in full sun. They need time to adjust, or leaves will burn. It looks like you have amended soil generously, and if you have hard clay soil adding compost yearly can be a must to improve it. Cotton burr is new to me, and sounds very interesting. I like seaweed meal too, it's great for improving clay soil. I like to alternate with amendments and use different stuff. Where I live composted cow manure, seaweed meal, and regular garden compost are the easiest to find. You probably don't need to fertilize with anything until the plant has bloomed. Liquid organic fertilizer, the kind that you can use for all potted plants, are pretty safe to use on everything. If you have hard clay soil it will improve with time, but yearly additions of compost, ground seaweed can be a must. Regards and best of luck with your roses :-)

The two winged critters aren't flies. Instead, they're winged aphids, a normal occurrence when the colony becomes crowded. Long-legged flies have a metallic body and hold their wings out to the side, also horizontal. Further, their antennae are very short. Aphids aren't metallic, and their wings are held tent-like over the abdomen. Aphid antennae, although admittedly difficult to see in the above photo, are typically -- but not always -- quite long.

Thank you everyone, and especially those of you who have posted photos. I have been on a little hiatus because I had some minor surgery, and to be honest I forgot that I posted this! I truly understand what most of you mean when you say that you should not prune until the roses are about 3-4 years old, I know they need their energy stores, I know that they have awkward teenage stages (hey, who doesn't?). The thing is that most of the ones I am having troubles with are Austins, and just judging by how much growth they put on last year, if I went this whole year without pruning them I think by fall they might be gathering up mailmen and loose dogs that wonder on to my porch. I suppose I am of the same mindset as Lori_elf, to help inspire new growth I want to get rid of some of this awkward growth that will not support strong, large canes, even if they seem a little young for it. I always get a little confused when talking about the ages of some of my roses anyway, Munstead wood for example is going into it's second year in my garden, but I purchased it as a large (4' at time of purchase), grafted, 3 gallon plant from my local nursery, so it obviously spent at least a year with them, if not more, so would you consider him to be 3 years old at this point? or still just going on 2 because that is how long he has been with me? Not that it really matters all that much because when I judge them, I don't really consider their age as much as I consider their overall size and the vigor that I have witnessed under my own care. For example, I have two Jude the Obscure plants which I got last spring, both have been living in pots that are 12" across since their initial transplant. One plant was a band from from Heirloom and it was purchased earlier in the year, the other was a gallon sized plant purchased from Chamblees purchased a little later in the year. The band from Heirloom really took off and put on a lot of growth last year & is now about 3' tall, he is the one with the odd candelabra situation. Even though the Chamblees specimen was supposed to be a "gallon sized plant", he has grown much slower, but has retained more of a pleasantly round & even shape, it is a little over 1' tall. I feel comfortable pruning the Heirloom specimen because the largest cane is very thick & long, the plant is tall and seems very healthy. I would however not prune the Chamblees plant, it is still very small and looks very young at this point. I think this is due to the unusually small root ball it had upon arrival, both plants I bought from Chamblees did (the other being Molineux) which is why I probably won't be ordering from them again, they were puny as gallon sized plants and have been surpassed by every single band I purchased from Heirloom at this point. I did prune both the roses that I mentioned in the original post, but I did it gently, not removing the entire candelabra, just a few of the smaller branches here and there, or the most awkward growth on the cane in question, so that the new growth that they put on this spring will help them evolve into more balanced, rounded shrubs. I don't have many roses large enough to prune, so these two being some of my only decent sized shrubs (3-5ft tall) I really wanted them to be presentable, even if it sets them back a tiny bit, I need something pretty to look at while I'm waiting on my herd of 1 year old gallon sized babies to mature. I really don't think it will cause them much of a problem, because as I said, almost all of my Austins have grown very quickly and vigorously so far, and I already see Jude swelling into large buds in all the places I was hoping he would, so I think he will do great this year, still waiting on MW, but I think he will do great as well. Wow Devon you always have an enlightening escapade going on don't you? Its amazing! You're like a little garden fairy with your magic wand sprinkling happiness on everyone, truly incredible. And you certainly did pick out the most gorgeous photos for this post, they are very lovely especially Julie Link....I just adore it! The first pic of Eden is simply marvelous!

These are all gorgeous. I hope my Eden will start looking like that. My plant had its first flush ever this spring and thrips ruined the entire thing.

I'm glad you're having fun with poetry. Life's too short not to have fun. I think in olden days when there was no electronic entertainment people waxed poetic more often and I bet there was much more live music.

Hoovb's pic of Disneyland is what convinced me I had to have that rose. It didn't disappoint me either.

It's all about inspiration - isn't that why we all hang out here? I do believe each rose I have today I got because someone posted a pic or said something positive to convince me it needed to be in my garden.
Devon, you ARE a breath of fresh air on this forum. Have fun growing all those roses in the beauty of PV. Yeah, I spent a good amount of time in the 50s beachcombing with my dear ol' Dad. A beautiful place.

Devon, that's very flattering of you to include my roses in with these other gorgeous roses you've selected in your thread. Thank you for this complement and your kind words about my dog.

You are very creative and having fun and 'stopping to smell the roses' is something I always forgot to do when I was younger. I was too busy working and being 'super mom' type A personality.

Your poetry and threads are always very enjoyable, your humor and good will is very refreshing.

Wonderful tribute to your special favorites! I especially like the green buds you pointed out in the Eden photo. That truly is captivating. I need to take a second look at that rose.

The Disneyland photo is just one of the best rose photos of all time. What an incredible rose, and an incredible gardener and photographer! My daughter has been absolutely dying for that rose all summer because of that gorgeous photo.

Devon - I'm honored that you've included one of my pictures among all the gorgeous pictures posted here all the time. Mary Rose sure did surprise me this year with how stunning her blooms are - she was a rose I've not been very fond of and was contemplating getting rid of - till she bloomed this spring.

I've been pretty busy and just barely have time to browse through here so I missed out about Leslie's dog passing away. I'm so sorry Leslie, that's just awful! We got our puppy during the beginning of the food recalls and it scared me so much I started researching alternative feeding - we came across the BARF diet (Bones and Raw meat or Biologically appropriate raw food) and decided to go that route - Bella is thriving on that.

Devon, what a nice surpise this post was with the pictures and your poetry. I too am extremely honoured that you used a couple of my pictures for this thread. Thank you so very much. The other pictures are amazing. Cupshape's Eden is incredible. Mine has to improve mega more. Maybe it is our climate too damp, it balls and browns. But then it was a really wet summer, so maybe next year. All the other rose pictures are fabulous and a great one of Mary Rose, Aprille. I really like her. Maybe she gets better with time, S L O W L Y better with time. I am waiting patiently. Actually, I can see the improvement, each of her three seasons.

just go for the pastel roses, big time. Thsnk's for the
encouragement about having fun with things.
