Need help with tool suggestion please

i am going to have to wade into the rose bed one weekend very soon to rescue the poor things from their sprawling bedmates. The lantana, pelargonium, cat mint and heliotrope are the worst offenders and will need to be pruned back with some severity.

when i go in i would like to be armed with something a bit more efficient than trusty felcos. i have a string trimmer but it seems too rough for this work. Maybe a sharp pair of manual hedge clippers would be right? Or a light, battery-powered mini hedge trimmer?

What do you use?

that would be my first pick, but put your Felcos in your back pocket as back up.

You might try one of those heavy duty cutting attachments for your weed wacker. Some will cut through small saplings.
That might get closer to the ground without bending over than a mini hedge trimmer.

I think you mean grommets. buygrommets.com has machines, but they're expensive. greenhousemegastore.com has plastic clip on grommets that are inexpensive.

The problem you're having with moisture retention may be related to the size of the pots in which you are starting and/or the type of pots in which you are starting. I have found that tiny pots dry out very quickly with soil or seedling mix. As far as Jiffy peat pots go, these dry out relatively quickly, too, unless they are kept under a dome. The mix I use is Black Gold Seedling Mix because everything I've been germinating seems to do well in it from conifers to perennials.

I use a three-tool kit consisting of: A cheap japanese hand hoe for shallow-rooted things like creeping charlie and chickweed A Nisaku hori-hori for deep-rooted things like dandelion and thistle A Rogue wide scuffle-hoe for large patches of nonsense* (see wintercreeper). I add one of those Fiskars three-tined dandelion pullers for lawn duty, but frankly, I think I have given up with that task.
