The Pickering Scare maybe over for me by 2008

"It's all in the fine print ..." for awhile I thought they were slowly shrinking and OGR's gone but it appears expansion is in the plans across the board (or getting back to the old days)... lifted from there site, 200 "hundred" more into inventory in fall 2008 including portlands ... Pergolese is on my list ... good news in my books.

In our climate kordes roses are for the most part disease free. Some of their HT's need spray. With the number of rose nurseries shrinking this is great news.

I've been trying to think of a gentle way to tell you that you are way over-thinking seed starting. Seeds have been growing on their own forever so toss some seeds on some soil and relax. This is suppose to be fun! I usually just pat my Snap seeds down on top of the medium and put them outside. They direct sow nicely too. I've started many plants in window sills but you need to turn the seedlings everyday. However, they will probably get a little leggy no matter what you do. Take them out of the trays of water! You want them to moist but not soaking. I'm concerned that the radiator is too hot. Very few seeds require a heating pad nor all that much heat to germinate. Seedlings grow better in cool temps. My growing room is in the basement that holds around 50 degrees. I have one heat mat but as often as not I just put my flat on the dining room table until I see sprouts, them move it down under lights. There is no one "right" way to grow from seed. Have you tried the "baggie method" or "Winter Sowing"? Everyone needs to figure out what works for them. Have fun and EXPERIMENT!

Wow this is an old thread! Well, I do believe it was a fisher cat. We have them here now and several of them too! I had seen one squashed in the road a few weeks back. They are quite mean critters. Since I started this thread years ago there was a woman who was running/ walking her dog in Ct. At black pond. Which is maybe 10 to 15 minutes from my house, anyway she and her dog were attacked my a juvenile mountain lion. I hear she and her dog survived but I do not know the full story. Also since then I had been doing some reading up on mountain lions. And also since then I have had two rescued wimpy but wonderful greyhounds. One night while I was taking them out for their final nightly "run" up in the woods to do their business, they both stopped dead in their tracks. I had an enclosure put together up in the woods with several metal fence in a roll type deal and a gate with latest h that we installed. The dogs stopped dead and was staring up towards the back of the enclosure. I tool my spotlight and started looking around. About 50 feet on the other side of the fence in the back were red and green shining eyes. A tan head and chest. It moved sideways , turning it's body and it was without a doubt a mountain lion! Needless to say I yelled for the dogs to go to the house and we ran and went inside. It didn't seem to follow us. Thankfully. But my town is filled with wildlife , I've seen everything but moose in town. We all have to learn to coexhist. Ciao all! Is there a way to delete this thread?

Forboystoo, We have a brick backsplash behind our stove: From 2010-0204 We're still under construction (though the range is functional and we do use it) so we don't have any long-term experience with brick as a backsplash. We live with a fair amount of this particular brick (Williamsburg hand molded) through the house, though, and it's well-sealed and indestructible, so I can't imagine it will perform any differently in this application-- I'm willing to bet we'll be very happy with it. Design-wise, brick's a pretty strong statement. I think it works best when it has some type of architectural context, either because the house itself is brick, or it already has brick elements in it. We have an old farmhouse, and we have the exact same brick on the floor of our back entryway, laundry room and powder room, and as surrounds around the fireplaces in our kitchen, family room and dining room. So the brick backsplash makes sense, and ties in with other brick in the kitchen and throughout the house. If there weren't a ton of other brick in the house, though, I would have chosen a different material-- it would have looked odd on its own.

Horses sleep laying down for the deep sleep. If you have 2 or more, one stays on their feet while the others lay down. One is usually on duty. It's a wild horse thing but even the domesticated horses do it. I see both of mine laying down in the sun sometimes. And they're smart enough to lay against a hill or high spot if their legs are giving them trouble. It's easier to get up. I don't know if the pony is so nosy that she has to always know what's going on or if she just doesn't need as much sleep as other horses. The sleeping beauty in this picture is my heart horse. She's been dead 4 long years. Sometimes I can still smell her. About a year after she died, I dreamed I was riding her bareback. I could feel her body and I could smell her and it woke me up. And she wasn't really there. Yes, the cat thing. I called it the "hussy pose".

And I hope they add more Brownell varieties! I've long been thinking of sending them some clean, non-virused budwood from my collection. Maybe I'll take the plunge...

Hey Riku and NERM,

I'm fortunate enough to live three hours away from Pickering Nursery and drive through Pickering on business every couple of months.

I was also a little worried when they moved from Pickering to Port Hope, that their collection might shrink, but no worries anymore. In fact, this summer, they once again introduced potted roses, and a selection of pernials and vines for retail sale at their new country location. Well worth the trip for anyone within driving distance. Litterally hundreds and hundreds of potted roses of all varieties waiting to be loaded and driven away with. Lots of OGRS, far too many must haves for my paltry large in town lot.

I must admit, I did sucumb to tempation on more than one occasion and came home with 6 or 7 roses this summer that must now find garden space.

On the other side of the coin, I had been talking to staff for a couple of years about my Buck roses. Pickering currently carries 8 Buck varieties, including Distant Drums which they added last year. This summer, they agreed to bud some other varieties that I have trialed for a few years. My stock was obtained from a reliable source and is disease free.

I agreed to provide wood from three varieties that I have found to perform extremely well here in Eastern Ontario. Accordingly, in August, I sent them some bud wood for Prairie Harvest, Pearlie Mae and Prairie Sunrise which they have budded for trial. I expect they will only have a few plants of each next year, but hope that once they evaluate them, they will decide to put them into commerce in 2009. Keep your fingers crossed Buck lovers. Now if only I could find a source that would ship Quietness and Chorale to Canada so I could trial them as well.

NERM, I know Pickering carry a few Brownell varieties, Break O' Day, White Cap and Golden Arctic come to mind. In fact, I looked for a source of some other Brownells here in Canada and found two mail order seed nurserys that carry some. But I could not find out where they get their stock and a knowleagable person told me that they had recieved virused Brownells from both these sources in the past.

So, I personally would encourage you to call Pickering and talk to them about virus free Brownell wood. Coming from the US, it would require phytosanitary certification, but once they have it, it could make some of Dr. Brownell's good roses much more widely available in both Canada and the US.
