Rose Conference in San Rafael, CA!

For those of you who live in or near the SF Bay Area in CA, just wanted to share that there will be an ARS NCNH (no idea what that means) District Conference Oct 10-12 in San Rafael! I guess they didn't do much publicity, as I live in that town, and only heard about it because it was in our local newspaper today.

Good news - they do have "a la carte" pricing - by day, with or without the dinner, etc. I am interested because both Greg Lowery and Burling Leong will be speakers (along with a bunch of others) on Saturday. I am really looking forward to going to the talks on Sat (they are also, of course, having a cut flower competition, but that is not my cup of tea).

If you don't live near here, my personal advice is NOT to stay at the hotel where the conference is, and not to eat the food there. It is run down, to say the very least. Can't believe they are having the conference there. However, there are lots of great places to stay and to eat nearby.

Gregg is ALWAYS a great speaker.
Burling is, too. Is she speaking on budding? That's worthwhile.

Thanks, Jeri. Burlong is speaking on something like preserving historic gardens (a la Hearst Castle, I presume).

I am still an ARS member, because I like getting the magazine, but I am no longer a member of the local chapter in Marin (they have a lovely rose garden, but rip out a majority of the roses every year to put in "new varieties", sigh), but they don't seem to care - no discount for the conference, or lack thereof.

I will report back on the talks I go to.

Hi BaaBaaRaa! Thanks for posting the pic of A Shropshire Lad. Your comments and the pic are making me regret that I passed up this rose during Regan Nursery's Labor Day sale... For me, Mel's Heritage has its first flush in June and then immediately repeats. I get another set of scattered blooms in Sept. and then it's pretty much done. While it gets some very mild powdery mildew (where conditions highly favor this particular disease),I have never seen blackspot on it. It is prone to spotting though (cercospora leaf spot?) and anthracnose. It looks like this rose may prefer some warmer days than what we get here. I put Mel's Heritage in the ground earlier this year; I had it in big pot before that. It threw out a 12 foot whip-like cane and I have plans to train this rose along the fence. But, climbing roses that I see in my neighborhood don't seem to achieve the sizes that they do everywhere else in California. To get an accurate idea of its size it would be best if you made a trip to the San Jose Heritage rose garden to see the Mel's Heritage there. It is huge, and I will be in trouble if my rose gets even a third of the size of the plant in San Jose. Have a wonderful holiday season! Before this gets away, let me tell you that Benny Lopez belongs in every fragrant garden. It was wonderful, although I may have been the only person to sniff it. Many, many of the roses in the show were HTs and for some reason, not many people there expected roses to be fragrant. Yes, we did fly to California for the Convention- not to show but to hear the talks. We're different that way. Someday I'll tell you about the tough day we had on the way out, let's just say we got drained by unavoidable stuff. Then we got to see a bit of LA...chortle...traffic...and more traffic, and we mistimed our visit to the StageCoach Inn Rose garden, so we enjoyed it through the metal gate. About Stagecoach's roses- still in the shade approaching noon, really good bloom and bloom quality for that amount of shade, good bloom color too...but (easterners and southerners) you would not believe how dense the leaves, the totally healthy leaves, are on those plants. I have never seen such dense leaves on tea roses. Simply awesome. It was good to visit with the west coasters and to talk with some of the eastern folks we'd been out of touch with. In retrospect, next time we do something like this with good older rose talks, we need to have a hospitality room that night...for more good talking. And, yes, Larry got to ride along Rte 66. We even saw some wonderful restored autos driving alongside of us...but they were on the interstate a tenth of a mile away while we were bouncing along avoiding pot holes on 66. That might have squelched his urge to drive a to-be-restored Packard cross country on Rte 66 (you may snap you fingers appropriately).

I second the Muir Woods suggestion; it's relatively close to SF and there are finally some decent places to eat in Larkspur, Tiburon and San Rafael. If you must eat Chinese food in SF, you are better off eating in the Richmond or Sunset neighborhoods, where enormous #s of Asians live (we did, for 17 yrs before moving across to the East Bay). For dim sum, Koi Palace in Daly City or Hong Kong Flower Lounge in San Mateo are cheaper and almost as good as the iconic Yank Sing, which has two locations, both OUTSIDE Chinatown: 101 Spear St. (Embarcadero) and 49 Stevenson (alley in the Financial District). Whatever you do or wherever you stay, try NOT to drive downtown! Take public transit instead. Parking is impossibly difficult; meters are now graduated rates according to time of day and accessibility. San Francisco is the pilot program for the Dept. of Transportation's new program to discourage urban drivers. Meter rates can vary from 50 cents to as high as $10/hr for the same parking space, depending on computerized availability during day and evening. Frankly, the best food in SF can be found in the smaller new bistros, such as Rich Table, State Bird Provisions, Quince/Cotogna, Benu, etc. Although if I were dining with an out-of-town foodie, I would pick Aziza, whose fusion cuisine has wandered far from its original Moroccan roots without disdaining them. Mourad Lahlou and his pastry chef Melissa Chou are both utterly brilliant, creative, and inspired. No other restaurant in Northern CA does the kind of cuisine Lahlou does. It is literally one-of-a-kind" -- never less than very good, and much of it 5-star greatness. Monterey/Carmel is a great area but there are not a lot of big public gardens. Carmel-by-the-sea has lovely courtyard gardens of beautiful container plantings hidden between buildings - check out the back courtyard of Anton & Michel's restaurant (but don't eat there, it's awful) for one of the prettiest, complete with splashing pool. Starting May 1st (tourist season officially begins) is the small-scale Secret Gardens of Old Monterey, which I linked below. Do try to reserve a tour at Tor House in Carmel, too - the little English garden is quite pretty, the setting absolutely superb, looking out over the Pacific. Website is http://www.torhouse.org/. Most people do the 17 mile drive, but don't realize that there's a coastal trail you can walk (weekdays are much less crowded than weekends!) leading to and from Asilomar State Beach, in Pacific Grove. You can actually start at the Monterey Bay Aquarium but I always find it very crowded with both tourists and locals. Almost everybody drops away after Lover's Point, where it's a level stretch to Asilomar Beach, walking along the Pacific's edge - absolutely gorgeous on a nice day! I live 20 minutes from san rafael,
do you know the price of a ticket to just the conference? I can eat and sleep at home.
Must one be an A.R.S. member to attend?

I've heard Gregg speak a number of times and I would love to listen to whatever Burling Leong has to say about any rose.

Lux, it is being hosted by the Marin Rose Society. If you go to their web site "www.marinrose.org", you will find all of the details, prices, registration forms, etc.etc. I must say they did a good job presenting all of the info in a format that makes it easy to locate the information you are looking for.

Additional info - as I said, you can sign up for each day separately, each meal (or not), etc. On Sunday for $20 they offer "garden tours". I inquired which gardens will be on the tour, and just got a reply: 1) The Marin Rose Society Garden at the Art and Garden Center in Ross - this is a very small but pretty rose garden on the property of what used to be a large estate - there is a great antique shop on the property also!, 2) A private garden in Ross belonging to the Scales family, which is said to be amazing - the garden of a Master Gardener (if you have never been to a home or garden tour in Ross, most of the properties are amazing), and 3) the private garden of a garden writer and rosarian in Novato which I am also sure is lovely.

We'll be on our annual anniversary trip tp the Gold Country that weekend. With Gregg and Burling speaking it should be a good conference. Going to private gardens is always a highlight.

Yes, it is. I thought it was too hot to stand around in gardens, so I did not include the garden tours in my registration. However, I got feedback that I could make that decision on Sat morning when I register for the seminars, so I am hoping that the weather will be a bit more reasonable, in which case I will definitely do the garden tours.

Yesterday I went to the all day seminars at this conference. The talks were all great, as I expected. The Marin Rose Society had someone taping all of them, so if you are interested I'm sure you can see them on their web site soon.

Interestingly, there were no speakers on topics like "why and how you should spray your roses", or "how to prepare roses for exhibition", or "how to grow roses for exhibition". All of the speakers talked mainly about old roses, but were also interested in modern roses. Very refreshing for an ARS conference!

This afternoon I am off to the three gardens which are open as a part of this conference - really looking forward to it.
