An oh, duh moment

I bought this tiny little mini tree rose at Whole Foods this spring. It was very unhealthy looking early with roseslug all over etc and I almost ditched it. But something told me to keep it and it returned the favor with weeks of cute little blooms. Not a million blooms, but enough.

It stopped growing at all about the first of August. I thought it was taking a rest but no new growth came whatsoever. I waited about four weeks thinking what is the deal? Then I went oh, duh and unpotted it. The thing had roots wrapped around and around the pot. It was planted in a tiny little pot. So I upgraded it to a 1 gallon pot and put it in the shade for now.

Next is my Lilian Austin. I had it growing in a 3 gallon nursery pot, which it came in. Same deal....stoppped growing about August 1st, at all. So today I unpotted it. Yes, there were roots on the bottom but it didn't look terrible root bound like the other one....do you think that is why it stopped growing? I put it in a new pot, but only about an inch larger on each side. I guess that will hold over the winter?

They grow those little roses in greenhouses, and push the devil out of them.
They're MEANT to go to market in bloom, and be discarded after.

So, to keep going after that, they really do need some TLC.

That reminds me to take my little red mini from Valentine's day that is growing in a bowl with some lobelia and pot it up in some fresh soil without any competition and see if it will at least give me a bloom. I've never thought too much of minis but the color of this one convinced me to buy it back in February. Nothing like TLC.

Funny, since the canary, and then the chickens, loved the florets so much I used to give them those and I would eat the stems LOL. Although, I do like them (peeled, of course). Raw or cooked. Since seeing that chickens will eat just about anything (except for a few of my cooking adventures...did you know that a chicken could GAG?) and the canary has passed away, I eat the entire thing myself. Dances.

I talked to Katie at Strata and she seemed very helpful, she actually said that she has SS in her kitchen at home so she is definitely familiar with it. I spoke with her 2 or 3 weeks ago and she said they had 2 slabs of Brazilian SS in stock that had some green veining but that they work with several suppliers and could order more in. I'm not exactly at the buying stage yet so I haven't made the trip to talk to them in person but as I get further in my remodel I will definitely make a trip up there. As for mountaineergirl's suggestion of Designer Stone in Port Washington, they are actually only 10 minutes away from me, I have talked to them and they aren't overly familiar with SS, or at least the person I talked to wasn't, but they have done it and usually get their stone from Mont in Solon. Let me know how it goes with Strata if you end up going with them, right now we are seriously considering DIY (my husband and his uncle who is a contractor, so there is experience in countertops just not SS) and getting the stone from M. I went out and "rescued" 11 of these little grocery store roses recently! Got them for $1 a piece! They were dry as a bone, so I soaked them good for a day, and then repotted them in some good soil. There were actually three little bushes in each pot, so I seperated them gently...getting 33 little plants....so far, about half have survived...but that half has new growth on them and look happy! It's been a fun experiment to see if I could revive them!

I don't mess with Minis much -- though we have grown many of them.
But I do find some of the really old ones, and the micro-minis, intriguing.
