I realize this is not the proper forum but this rose has been discussed recently and I wanted to give others a chance to see it. I have not sprayed so the leaves look bad.

I am near you - about 3 hours from Galveston in east Texas. I love my Tess. I have her on a huge fan shaped trellis - she has very healthy foliage and lots of nice blooms. Two of my favorite Austins are Carding Mill and Abe Darby. Wollerton Old Hall, new for me last year, does get really big, don't find the blooms fragrant like Austin says, but they are pretty. Sophy's Rose is a really good one - healthy foliage, lots of big pretty deep pink blooms. Bishop's Castle is good. Lady of Shallot looks to be big. I have quite a few new ones that are healthy and growing - they will do better next year. Great big for me are James Galway and Scepter d'Isle - like them a lot. I have Lady Emma and Munstead Wood planted where they get full sun until 2pm - hope they like it there. I really like Ambridge Rose too. Love the blooms on Jude......mine is very small though. I am getting another Young Lycadis - my chickens were scratching in that bed and killed it. The color is a different, brighter looking pink that I really like. Englands Rose was new for me last year - it started off looking and blooming fantastically.....then it starting dawdling around. Am hoping it will get going again in the spring - it was really nice. I want to try Princess Alexandra of Kent - have heard good things about it. Do any of you all plan to try the new Austins? I have been intrigued by LEH for a long time, but it took me a while to decide to get her, because I heard that it doesn't do well in places without enough winter chill or too hot in the summer. In fact some California nurseries do not recommend it in zone 10. It tends to grow slow or get fungal disease. I also heard that it tends to not do well as own root - too wimpy and you will need it grafted. I live in Northern California in a micro climate that is actually cool in the summer but doesn't get cold in the winter. This spring I finally decided to give it a try. To my surprise it has been growing very rigorously in my garden. I am probably lucky. Now it is almost 4 feet in height and 3 feet across. It has beautiful reddish foliage, and the color is light orange with pinkish overtone. I do spray it every 2 - 3 weeks to prevent fungal disease. It comes grafted on Dr. Huey. Here are some pictures: As my micro-climate is cool, I only had 2 days in June during which the temperature went up to 95 F. During those 2 days the petals of LEH burnt. So if your summer is very hot in Indiana, it may not do well. I don't have Pat Austin but I heard that the flowers blow in just 1 day. The flowers of LEH last a bit longer but no longer than 3 - 4 days. I do have very strong wind in the spring and the summer. Not sure you considered Lady of Shallot which I think is more robust than LEH and Pat Austin. Lady of Shallot is almost continuously blooming and from what I heard is quite cold hardy and very disease resistant. In my garden, it is one of the few that does not need to be sprayed.

Ratdogheads, your pictures look great! My summers for the last few years have been pretty perfect with temps in the low 90's here and there, otherwise 80's, maybe a week of bad humidity and unbearable weather. I actually could plant roses all last summer it was so mild, and that is rare. We have been having strange weather for Wisconsin though, milder winters (like this last one) though last year's polar vortex was down to -26 without the windchill. My roses survived it. I'm curious on this year after the mild winter what will stay. I don't uncover till tax day, as we still usually get a frost around the 13th, then it's smooth sailing! I am having a hard time deciding what to prune as the canes are sometimes discolored then green then discolored further down. If it buds, do you keep it or cut it off? If it's totally brown or black I, of course, cut it off. Btw, thank you for showing your zone, I like to be able to see if someone is close to my zone and what they're growing! :) Krista, Wow! I love it between the two purple/pinks. It really brings out the pink. It doesn't look red at all. So pretty! I'm so glad you mentioned the fragrance because that is a must! Thank you!

Moses LOL I had never seen "clean" roses until people posted them on this forum. Literally. I always thought rose leaves turned black, yellow and crispy once summer hit for everybody. Some (Raspberry Cream Twirl) are better than others, but many of my roses hardly have any leaves (Sterling Silver). I rarely care--I grow them for the flowers :) Carla

Yours is looking similar in color to mine. It's a shame that the fragrance can't be conveyed through a picture because this rose smells nice.

I like this rose a lot but she has black spotted very badly for me the past few weeks.

How strong is the neck of the stem and what is the vase life like? PAT AUSTIN is similar in color but her blooms nod downward and shatter upon opening. An orange English Rose without these two faults would be most welcome.

Has anyone has the chance to see the new Austin rose, Summer Song? I Just ordered it from Palatine, but am wondering how it differs from Pat Austin or Lady Emma Hamilton. My PA covers the whole fence, and LEH(new this season) is still only about 18" tall but very full and starting to bloom.

Summer Song is to go into a bed of apricot, cream and coffee roses so hope it is not another giant one, much as I like my fence full of English roses (Teasing Georgia, Pat Austin and Windrush cover about 30' of fence between them).

Carla you have forced me into a confession. I like this rose so much i sprayed her-twice-with Bayer Advanced Disease Control. She's still naked ; )

Patrick-she nods just enough to be charming and goes 3 maybe 4 days in a vase.

lizalily, I have seen pictures of SS but haven't seen it in person. The pictures were beautiful.
Maui, thanks for answering the nodding question. As roses perform differently in the ground, I can't say very much about LEH yet. I do like the colors.

Hello ...

I have LEH, Pat Austin and Summer Song ... They're grown in pots, as I garden on a rooftop patio ... I am not a rose expert, as I've started growing rose last winter when I potted 12 austin roses.

LEH is healthy for me (but I can say that about any Austin I have, and I do not spray for blackspot, so it might be my climate ... slugs enjoyed her foliage though ). The flowers are pretty (my LEH shows some pink overtones), the dark shades of the young shoots are nice and the growth is bushy ...

However I find she does not bloom that much (only one flush since the begining of the season, but this flush was gorgeous) and she is not really fragrant ... Her blooms are smaller than Pat Austin's and they do not nod as much.

@Lizalily : I have Summer Song too ... I've been very disappointed by this rose.
In my opinion the colour is a gaudy orangey red (mine has no blooms at the moment, but it has buds, I might be able take a picture next week if you want), blooms really look messy as they age, and the bush looks leggy and is very upright. Still, it's my first growing season with it ... Pat Austin is far more elegant and pretty IMO.

Yes, I would love to see a pic of Summer Song but I would not worry too much about first year flowers. If it has the deep tones that Pat is showing now in the cool fall weather but lasts longer on the bush and in the vase or even if it will hold its head up better I know I will like it.

Carla, when you delete the picture from your files, then it will automatically delete from Photobucket. Could this be the problem. Oh my, now I am thinking I could be wrong, maybe if you delete it from Photobucket is the answer. I am pretty sure it is one or both of the two anyway.

I missed out. I hope you could post those pics here again, please :) I said the magic word. I agree with moodyblue. If you delete or move a photo from photobucket it will also affect here too.

I wonder why there's not many pics of Summer Song posted here on this board.

You will love Pat Austin. Fragrance isn't quite as strong as LEH IMO, but still a nice scent, and my PA is due to open it's blooms tomorrow. Mine is thriving and I like the look of the red canes and glossy foilage.
