Lady Emma Hamilton
Comments (15)Pat's color is much more coppery, and in some ways more subtle, softer. Lady Emma's is a bright tangerine, often with a reddish rim, albeit tending toward yellow in cool weather, all in all much more modern. Lady Emma's leaves are matte and of a lovely burgundy, not glossy and green like Pat's leaves that look like pointy tea leaves (I love that look). I think Lady Emma won't grow as big as Pat. Lady Emma's blooms last longer than Pat's, but it's not such a huge difference. I can't speak for heat resistance though, since there is no such thing like summer in England. Well, and then there's the perfume. Pat's phenolic tea is no match for Lady Emma's powerful citrus salvo. Think Jude the Obscure, even more delicious, perhaps....See MorePat Austin or Lady Emma Hamilton
Comments (21)2 cents a few days late: I have no experience with Pat Austin, but Lady Emma is a absolutely brilliant here in Phoenix. I have 3 planted in a dry stream, which means they get *reflected* heat -- they do have late afternoon shade from the house, but the heat is merciless. The new foliage is spectacular purple and bronze, it blooms constantly (with a rest in the worst of the summer, of course) and the fragrance is even better than Jude. I planted them grafted bare-root from Austin 2 springs ago. For comparison, 3 Carding Mill planted at the same time and in slightly better circumstances (in a "normal" bed rather than a dry stream) are just "blah." They actually might not get quite *enough* sun in their location, but neither the foliage nor the bloom is anything close to Lady Emma. This is from 2011, one year in the ground (click for big):...See MoreRose Porn, new DA catalogue
Comments (11)I looked at the new varieties that DA was introducing, but the only one that looked interesting was the white sport of The Mayflower. All the others were some version of pink, and there are plenty of pink roses out there to choose from. The only one that I am interested in getting that is new is Lady of Shallot. I would like to see how it compares with Summer Song, Pat Austin, and Lady Emma Hamilton. If someone has Lady of Shallot, please speak up on how it does. Pat Austin is a nice, clear orange. Lady Emma is a softer orange on a smaller bush and has a nice fragrance. My first crop of flowers off Summer Song were not as dark as the pictures, but that can change with time and plant maturity. So, on that one, I will wait to see what they do. Other Austins I would like to add to my already severely overstuffed garden are another The Prince, another Lady Emma Hamilton, English Garden, and Sir Edward Elgar. Other than that, I have plenty and am out of room. Ones I am not impressed with for one reason or another are Tea Clipper for its dirty dishwater-colored flowers and no repeat bloom, Sweet Juliet for its all bush no flowers lifestyle, Fisherman's Friend for its excessive growth habit and not enough flowers especially because the ones it has are fairly large and fragrant, Ludlow Castle for its lack of repeat bloom, Rosemoor for its poor performance and very small flowers if it has any, and Port Sunlight for its mini-flora-sized flowers so far although its color has improved this year....See MoreLady Emma Hamilton
Comments (20)Hello ... I have LEH, Pat Austin and Summer Song ... They're grown in pots, as I garden on a rooftop patio ... I am not a rose expert, as I've started growing rose last winter when I potted 12 austin roses. LEH is healthy for me (but I can say that about any Austin I have, and I do not spray for blackspot, so it might be my climate ... slugs enjoyed her foliage though ). The flowers are pretty (my LEH shows some pink overtones), the dark shades of the young shoots are nice and the growth is bushy ... However I find she does not bloom that much (only one flush since the begining of the season, but this flush was gorgeous) and she is not really fragrant ... Her blooms are smaller than Pat Austin's and they do not nod as much. @Lizalily : I have Summer Song too ... I've been very disappointed by this rose. In my opinion the colour is a gaudy orangey red (mine has no blooms at the moment, but it has buds, I might be able take a picture next week if you want), blooms really look messy as they age, and the bush looks leggy and is very upright. Still, it's my first growing season with it ... Pat Austin is far more elegant and pretty IMO. Barthelemy Note : I should add that my LEH might have suffered from drought this summer as my irrigation system failed as I was on holidays ......See MoreMasLovesRoses_z8a GA
