Only have room for 1 or 2 roses...help me pick!

We're finally getting around to doing the landscaping in the backyard, and unfortunately we just don't have the amount of sun as would be beneficial to grow all the roses I'd like.

Here's the wishlist:

1) Does well with no-spray

2) Blooms as much as possible

3) Has a good fragrance (either wafting or smells good when you stick your nose in a bloom)

Here's the list of finalists:

-General Schablikine

-Mme Abel Chatenay

-Mme Lombard

-Mrs. B.R. Cant (will this one take pruning to keep it in bounds?)

-Mrs. John Laing

-Radox Bouquet

-Frederic Mistral

Any remarks in favor of or against these roses would be greatly appreciated, as we don't have the room for roses that won't fully earn their keep. Thanks in advance!

My Radox is more disease resistant than my Freddie. Both are mighty tall roses. Radox is smaller blooms but the clusters are beautiful bouquets. Freddie is good if you want long stems. Both last well in a vase and repeat well but I think Radox has had more flowers over the year. For both roses the fragrance is strong and sweet. I never tried to keep my Radox short but I think Freddie will always want to be very tall. He doesn't seem to want to bloom until the canes get long. Mom can never remember the name and calls it Radish Bouquet.

I wouldn't be without Mrs. B.R. Cant. She smells divine and has no disease issues here.

Hi Scott, It would save me a tremendous amount of space and make me extremely glad if I could fit all 4 varieties into a single 30' x 30' circle area dedicated to the 4-in-1 tree's life-long spread. I want to bounce still a couple of potential complications with this senario, all of which may be resolvable. And believe me: I am willing to be vigilant and careful in maintaining the tree's 4-way balance if it turns out that I decide to things this way. 4 Separate rootstocks/cultivars in one hole: 1. Peach trees are, even when left unrestricted, smaller trees with smaller trunk and root systems then American persimmons. If I give each cultivar its respective 1/4 room to spread its foliage, I fear that each tree will struggle to obtain enough solar sourced energy to support itself; although, one point could be to note that pruning will keep the trunk and roots small and potentially/hopefully proportionate to each tree's respective trunk/root-stem/needs. The 4+ major scaffolds arising from the base of the peach, cherry, wild-growing persimmon, etc. are sharing the same nutrients via the same root-system. If I ever decide to let the tree grow to full form and size, the 4 trunks would grow so large and strive to get away from the other trunks that they would fall down. 2. Jerry Lehman convinced me that it is not likely that American persimmons would properly inosculate, that instead of fusing they would bruise and rot - specifically American persimmons, not all trees. This doesn't, however, have anything to do with spacing the four trees in the same hole 20" apart. 3. However, it seems to me pretty feasible: which is to carefully keep the 4 trees in relative 1/4-balance within the 4-way circle. 4. Your description of that cherry tree above makes me think that we are talking about not many trees in the same hole, but a single tree bearing various root stocks in-grafted? Is that what you recommend? I've been told that persimmons are notorious from dropping former limbs when new ones are added. Let me know which situation you recommend for me: 4 trees in one hole or should I do a multi-graft tree - if I could do the later and be secure that it would work, I could just keep my 4 saplings for the future purpose of being the scion bank for the multi-graft tree. I keep hearing that I shouldn't do a multi-graft persimmon tree. I just got my persimmons in the mail and I quickly put them in the ground pending what I finally decide upon. I really appreciate discussing my options on this with you - at least when I do choose a plan, I'll have considered practically every option. Thanks, Steve

If you can get some hostas for your flame azaleas, great. I could give you a couple of healthy hostas but I don't know their names. I have a few and they are doing really well. If you can get a whole lot of hostas for your flame azaleas, go for it, but if you don't get a better offer, I'm definitely interested. The only thing is timing. I would have trouble getting to your area before Oct 7, but I plan to go to the swap that day and would be delighted to go on to your home from there -- if that's not later than you want to get your azaleas out of the bed! So there are some "ifs" for you if you don't get a better and more timely offer! Thanks

Thanks so much for all of your kind responses! Brandyboy sounds wonderful, and more productive than Brandywine. Does anyone know of a good source for Brandyboy seed? Carolyn, I agree that I should expand my color range. I have heard many good things about Black Krim. Another black, Black from Tula, is listed in Seed Savers Exchange as Âgood yields of 3-4 inch fruits on 3-4 foot plantsÂ and Ârich full flavor.Â I like the idea of having a few smaller plants, since I will be growing two massive cherry plants. I am wondering if Black Krim is a similarly smaller plant. Can anyone please share your experiences with Black Krim, Black from Tula, etc.? A few of the many other varieties that I am interested in are: Mortgage Lifter, Matina, Box Car Willie, Arkansas Traveler, and Neves Azorean Red. Wish I had more space!...maybe some day. How are the above varieties with regard to taste and production? (I would prefer all indeterminates, again with full flavor and heavy yields.) At this point, is my best bet to look for seeds/starts at a local nursery (versus big box store), rather than ordering from a seed catalog? Lee, I live in the Jamestown area, Southwest Greensboro / North High Point. Does anyone in the Greensboro area know of a nursery with good selection and harder-to-find tomato varieties? And yes Nandina, the FarmerÂs Marked it outstanding, and huge! I am fortunate to live only about six miles away, and visit often. Last summer, I recall lots and lots of tomato plants, but not much variety (but this was after spring). I did pick up a Patio Totem at the FarmerÂs Market. I will keep my eye out for starts. Anyone else that lives in the Piedmont Triad that has not been to the FarmerÂs Market, must go! I will miss it dearly if I ever move. Also wanted to mention that I do have a stack of seed catalogs ~ Totally Tomatoes, Tomato Growers, Seed Savers, Sandhill, Territorial, Pinetree, etc, etc. But my concern is delivery time. Last year I waited weeks for my Pinetree order, which I placed in September when I figured it wouldnÂt be so busyÂ Sorry for SO MANY questions, I love to learn about tomatoes! On the Laundry Room forum I added the following information. But I am really looking for some guidance in external wiring. No, no overloading. We never used the two highest loads of 'Extra Large' and 'Super'. This is a GE top-load washer. I never had any problems with GE washers, and other GE appliances. My GE refrigerator lasted since 1987, but I replaced it with a more energy-efficient model. It is very difficult to blame a manufacturer or a particular model when it very well might be a problem with the external electric wiring. For that reason I am posting my problem here. Next step might be hiring an electrician to check out the wiring between breaker and wall outlet at the washer. The GE repair man said he would check the external wiring possibly next. Again, this has never happened to me since we own houses since 1974. I basically wonder what's going on here. Having 2 fail in succession is very unusual. First I thought the first one was a lemon, then that the service guy did not know how to fix it. But then the second one failed too. These washers have this new wave action washing, it seems when we pick a water level too high for the amount of clothes, water will swap out of the tub, coming out from under the washer. But any manufacturer should shield the electric parts from water spillage, I hope. We never have overloaded the machine, we actually handled washing with this model the same as we did with its predecessors. We noticed that at times with the second machine we heard something like rifle shots. I guess that could have been shorts in the windings of the motor, it smelled like electric shorts. After it does that for a few days, the agitator/spinning no longer works. These are top-load clothes washers, around $500, no extra whistles, model GTWN4250MOWS. We always bought the same type GE washer. We never had any new appliance fail on us within 6 years after purchase. Here we have 2 fail each after 1/2 year. The home was built in 1978 in a residential suburb. The home builder was well known in the area. When I did some wiring on other circuits, I noticed that they used copper wire and were grounded. My Frederic Mistral is wider than it is tall, but it's still plenty big and vigorous in all directions. It's my favorite of all my roses for it beautiful scent. I don't know about disease (we don't have BS here), but FM is a thrips magnet, and that is it's main downfall for me. Diane

Mrs. John Laing has gorgeous fat blooms, but she is not that disease-resistant. Perhaps somewhat better than average, but I'd expect her to be destroyed by BS in New Orleans. In fact, I wonder if any rose is safe from BS there. Hope you get responses from some folks from your area since I'm not an expert on BS in your area, but here in Kansas she is likely one of the first roses to show BS signs in my garden.

Wish I could help you on the others, but I do not grow them.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I have had roses down here before, and perhaps went a big hog wild trying to fit as many roses as I could on a very small property before.

These are the ones I've had before:

Pink Gruss an Aachen X
Buff Beauty
Belinda's Dream
Old Blush
Cl. Cramoisi Superieur
Duchesse de Brabant*

Most of those did fine (SDLM and Pink GAA as the big exceptions). I absolutely loved the DdB and am actually thinking of getting her again. I love her fragrance, and she seemed to do rather well considering what an over-crowded area she was in (the last 7 roses listed were in a strip about 5-6'x20'). But because I have such limited rose space at the new house, I want to make sure that whatever rose(s) I get I'm going to absolutely love, and with the exception of the Duchesse, none of the others qualified for me.

So based on the comments above, perhaps my list of finalists should now look like this:

-General Schablikine
-Mme Abel Chatenay
-Mme Lombard
-Mrs. B.R. Cant
-Radox Bouquet
-Duchesse de Brabant

And in terms of size, I'd like to be able to keep the bush to a 6' diameter. Will Mrs. B.R. Cant be able to withstand that much pruning?

Mrs. B.R. Cant is one of the really large tea roses with a very spreading habit and I have some doubts about it being happy with being chopped back continuously. Since you like DdB, would you consider her lovely sport, Mme. Joseph Schwartz? What about early hybrid teas like the very fragrant La France? I don't know what does well in your climate, and hope that more people near your area can advise you.

Mme Joseph Schwartz is pretty large. Mine is about 5'tall by 6' wide. Lovely blooms with huge fragrance, though!
