Anyone Grow Bloomfield Dainty?

One of the bands I received this summer that was supposed to be Francesca is for sure not her. The blossoms come singly, not in sprays, and the flowers are a dead ringer for the pictures of Bloomfield Dainty. They come from orange buds that open to a beautiful yellow single, with pinkish edges. The growth habit of the bush is arching and pretty, and the leaves are a medium green, not real dark.

Can anyone tell me how well Bloomfield Dainty does?

Does she like some shade? (I kind of think most of the hybrid musks like a little shade in Florida).

Does she bloom a lot?

We had Bloomfield Dainty for several years, in Lakeland, and it was a very stingy bloomer, so we eventually removed it. Good spring bloom flush, then usually one individual flower, here and there, the rest of the year.

Thanks Malcolm. I won't bother planting it. It's too bad this one nursey sent me 3 different bands that weren't what they were supposed to be.

For the record, it wasn't Vintage Gardens that sent out imposters. All of their bands have been what they were supposed to be, and very healthy.

Yeah, it's most definitely an issue here, which is why I asked. Interesting that some things I've grown or neighbors have grown don't seem to behave the same elsewhere. Mutabilis for example, was lush and green and had very little BS. Just gets huge. The singles I mentioned aren't completely disease free, but they don't defoliate entirely, so they're acceptable. It's been difficult coming up with things that aren't going to defoliate entirely but there are a few that are pretty good out here. I don't know Charlatan at all but wow, it sure looks beautiful. How is that with disease? And thanks to all the replies! Kind of what I thought but I figured I'd ask.

Pink Gruss an Aachen is a color sport of the original Gruss an Aachen -- and it has long been sold in error as 'Irene Watts.' It is NOT Irene Watts, and it is probable that that China Rose is lost. It's lovely in its own right. Bishop Darlington is -- as others have said -- ginormous. It is a beautiful rose which, in my Coastal SoCal conditions, is completely disease-free (NO spray). It displays quite a color range, because it's very changeable. I love it, and wouldn't want to be without it. I read a clever comment to the effect that the Bishop, a modest fellow, uses those incurving petaloids to hide his "modesty." But it SHOULD be noted that the real Bishop Darlington -- an Episcopal Bishop, was a poet -- and a great promoter of women's right to vote.

Have you ever seen the climbing mini 'Grace Seward'? A friend near Asheville who gardens in Zone 5 (her garden is on the top of a mountain) had Grace Seward growing up a south facing wall, and her smaller blooms reminded me of Dainty Bess but they were much lighter (those dark anthers), and it was far from a HT like growth habit. If not Grace (which I would use rampantly if I had a gray building like my friend did), maybe something related?

I think what must have happened is that they got confused a LONG time ago - I remember reading a statement by a famous rose person in the UK that he was sure they had the correct BA (I think this was before the DNA results) because "my father grew it". So, perhaps the mix up happened in the US, and the wrong plant was sent to the UK, or it happened there right after they got the first plant. Then it became conventional wisdom, so by the time it was questioned everyone's feet were in concrete. Thank heavens DNA analysis can be done now! Jackie

Unfortunately, my experience was similar to Malcolm's. Also the color wasn't as pretty as what I had seen of this variety in a book on roses. It's really a shame that you were sold three incorrect roses, that's way above the level of acceptability. Would you feel comfortable naming the offending rose company, to warn off the rest of us? I've had very good luck with Vintage, Rogue Valley and Chamblees, although the shipping cost from Chamblee's seemed high, at $21.00 for three roses. However, they were gallon containers.

$21. shipping for 3 roses in 1-G containers sounds pretty reasonable. Particularly if the plants were well-grown 1-G.

I am curious to know if the company who shipped the three mis-labelled plants offered to replace them. Everyone makes mistakes, but a good company should make good on it.

Jeri, two roses were the Austin Cottage Rose and were a good size but both have black spot. The other, Duchesse de Brabant, is quite petite and sparse for a one-gallon plant, but seems disease-free. They'll be planted in the ground soon and we'll see what the future brings.

FWIW, Duchesse de Brabant was a habitual mildewer for me here near the coast.

I really need to contact the nursery again. I had called when Souvenir de St. Ann's turned out to not be her (it has long canes and bloomed a single canary yellow), and I was supposed to get a replacement but haven't heard anything back in a while.

I didn't call about the other two yet. I guess I was worried they would think I was making it all up. I'll send the owner an e-mail.

I really hate to name them at this point, on the internet. The previous order of bands I had gotten from them were all fine and are doing well in pots.

Forgot to add that if the nursery doesn't want to correct the mistake, THEN I'll certainly let everyone know who it is. At this point I'd prefer a credit card refund, and am willing to have them arrange for return of the incorrect roses. I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Take a few pictures of the impostors and send the photos to that nursery. I know of no respectable nursery that does not offer full credit if they send plants that aren't true to the name they sell. Even for couple of dollars perennials nurseries usually offer replacement that would be true to name or offer credit.

I sent an e-mail last night, and I am sure that this nursery will respond favorably. That is why I didn't want to name names, because anyone can have a difficult time period. We're all human, after all.

Sandy, I respect your sense of decency. As you say, we all make mistakes. As long as they make good on the error, why harm their reputation? If they dismiss your request, that is another story.

FWIW...I've gotten a couple roses that were mislabled, and those roses have become some of my favorite mystery roses... The nurseries did replace them and didn't want the mistakes back...

I was hoping the "mistakes" would turn out to be great roses anyway (they probably are - somewhere), but they don't sound like they would be worth planting here, because they aren't really suited for my climate. Florida is a great place to grow roses, but only the ones that can take our harsh conditions.

I envy those of you who have gotten "surprises" and they turned out to be treasures for you. That would be fun.
