Yankee Doodle is nice. Tempting. However I've noticed a rather conspicous trend of light colored roses in the garden this year so I'm trying to buy roses that create a bit of contrast.

Guess I better go look at that list again.

That's where I ordered my Reinne Des Violette, which has'nt arrived yet. Even tho it states it's a zone 4 rose and I live in zone 5,even tho they told me 'Oh yes yes, it will survive in your zone, now I'm sad and discouraged because of reading of the elaborate things I must do to even give it a chance to survive. The same w the 2 Buck Distant Drums I ordered, which are supposedly hardy hardy roses. I don't even feel like trying to plant them anymore........maybe I'll give them to a friend, even tho she has difficulty growing chick weed..

Iris, I am z5b/z6a. RdV and DD are hardy to the tips here. I do not winter protect them.

Is the problem that it's so late in the season to plant them out?

oh i saw that, but they have to be shipped by the 15th, and i won't be home until the 22nd to get my order from vintage. Even though it's not that extensive of a list i saw several that i would like to have ordered.

Forget the elaborate "things you must do", and just plant them! They for sure will not survive if you don't plant them. If there is anything i have learned is that the roses will do what they are going to do despite what you do or don't do.

I agree with Len - just plant them. Before I was a rose addict, I ordered my first batch of roses from High Country in the Fall and I planted them... And they all survived. Not all of my luck with Fall planting has been that good, but I have had really good luck with HCR. I don't think I've lost a plant from them yet.

I have already ordered twice from them this season, but it's sure tempting when things are on sale. I'd love to have Königin von Dänemark and Henry Kelsey... And Veilchenblau. :-)

Well, I admitted I was an addict and built a coldframe, so that's what I suggest. Give up and build yourself a coldframe! Then you can overwinter 40 or 50 gallon pots at a time! :-) Aren't I helpful?

If it comes down to giving them away or planting them - by all means plant them. Set them a little deep when you plant. Keep them reasonably watered so they can establish their roots before the ground freezes, give them good winter protection (ex. mound up with hardwood chips), water them over winter if you have a dry winter, in Spring don't pull back the mulch too early - if you do pull it back and it's slated to freeze hard (say below 30 deg.) - put a nice black nursery pot over them at night to give them some protection. See how they do... It is a gamble that late in the season. When a strong specimen survives Fall planting - they usually do really well later on.

Heck if I'd give away those two roses, though.

I don't do the coldframe,mulch or anything. I don't pot up the bands first either, i just plant them. No book in the world or nursery for that matter will advise you to do that. We are not talking about cuttings, or at least i hope not, the bands should be 6-18months old, and well rooted, the summer is actually harder on them than the fall and winter. The roots will continue to grow until the ground freezes which really depends on your area. Where i live even though it is warmer is actually harder on them because we don't get a reliable snow cover. If you live in an area that constantly thaws and freezes would be harder on them. the worst thing is early spring if it warms up enough to break dormancy, and then it freezes solid for a week. That's why a later blooming rose or one that comes out of dormancy later will be more reliably
cold hardy. It's really a part of the learning experience, as no one can guess the weather or control nature. Now if you are growing a tender rose out of it's zone, you need to take protective measures, even then you have to be diligent about removing the protection at the right time because even though nature can be very forgiving, many times it is ruthless. bad gardners like me have to rely on the more natural thing and avoid pots, and growing things out of their element, because they will surely die, it takes a more attentive and skilled person than I.
and what i returned to say was that i have ordered a couple of times from high country also and they have always sent me really healthy plants that have done well whether planted spring or fall.
