Spontaneous death! What happened here?

I had two rugosa rose bushes die on me: a Wildberry Breeze (Jacrulav) and Wild Spice. They were very vigorous, growing for three years about 15 feet apart. Leaves on branches began turning brown and ultimately the entire bush was dead. I saw no sign of pests and while I'm beset with lots of rodents (moles, gophers, voles, ground squirrels), I saw no sign of tunnels around the roots. Both plants got plenty of water and were fertilized every six weeks with rose food as always. I'm in the Sacramento area (low humidity and no summer rain) and both plants died in early July.

The Wild Spice had two volunteers that had apparently grown from it's roots about a foot from the main plant. Both these volunteers are still going strong with no sign of the damage that killed their parent.

Can anyone offer a guess as to what/who assassinated these two beauties?

Thanks,

Bob
