what causes leaves to look like this?

asked before with so-so pictures, here is a better one

two of the canes on my alba maxima have their leaves like the one on the right and the edges are more spikey/pointed, the rest look normal like the one on the left

what disease is this?

I think it might be spider mites. They can make leaves look ugly in a variety of ways. They themselves are very difficult to see. My garden has just had an invasion that started insidiously.

What other symptoms are there? How do the stipules (the things at the bottom of the leaf) compare with normal leaves?
Is there a difference in leaf spacing?
What bothers me is the possibility that something is interfereing with the formation of the leaf very early on and there appears to be a mottle pattern within the leaf. The margin of the two leaves shows that the odd ones are really different and the leaf forms of the odd ones are asymmetric as well as the wrong leaflets below the end leaflet.
Tell us more, please.

Thank you for your valuable input, Rhizo. After reading your post, I reread about neem use against psyllids. "Results have generally been poor against whiteflies, pepper maggots, and psyllids." (Source: www.nysaes.cornell.edu/pp/resourceguide/mfs/08neem.php) Another, albeit specifically mentioning tomato/potato psyllids (not sure if its the same psyllid): "Soap spray results have been disappointing and neem has not worked." (Source: www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/4DMG/Pests/psyllids.htm) Does anyone have knowledge of neem's ability to have systemic effects on Pepper Psyllid on the Brazilian Pepper tree? I am tempted to mix up a batch of Neem Concentrate (www.greenlightco.com/products/neem/)and water the tree roots. Good idea or bad idea? If good idea, would the Neem mix rate per gallon of water would be the same for systemic application (2 tablespoons per gallon) as it is for foliar spraying? btw, Rhizo, you are so right about Ladybugs. In the past, when I have released thousands in one day, only a few dozen insects stay around. I wish that my neighbors on all sides would release thousands, maybe some would flee to my property... Got to agree with the above. That was my first reaction too since it is across the board - it is the classic look of way too much water/too wet soil. My only other thoughts as "possibles" is halide light burn or wind burn. But if in the greenhouse and unless your fans are set way too high speed ;) I'd doubt wind burn is the problem. Dave

Watering every day is not helpful to a shrub. If you are watering enough to wet deep into the soil, then doing it every day is overwatering. If you are not watering enough each day to wet deep into the soil, then you are underwatering. Water sufficiently to wet the soil about a foot down, and do it once a week, maybe twice a week in a heatwave. 70F is not a heatwave, wait until it gets to 90F then think about watering more than once a week.

Hi Buylady, At the prodding from many here, very good, great friends, members and human beings, I am back. It is ok, we are all here to help each other in different ways, with different views, and to encourage one another to be the best at growing these very, what can be finicky trees... I figure, in my quest to keep them healthy after years of reading, research, and different techniques, associating with very experienced growers, while in the process loosing dozens and dozens of trees at a huge expense, I can help others avoid these same tragic experiences... I enjoy it here mostly, because it is people like you that make it fun to come here and make happy.. Buylady, I agree with Jean, is is not rust.. In my opinion, it is the result of the sun beating on damaged leaves cause from so much damage from all the insects that have affected their growth and sucked the life out of them. They are shedding their leaves to make room for new healthy growth, and I wouldn't be concerned..Could be from overwatering still too, not sure on that though... Much love Mike

no signs of spider mites...no little webs

stipules look normal

leaves are spaced closer(stipule to stipule)

and the canes are thornier

i live within the city limits. there are a few multiflora plants around, but none that i have seen with RRD

oh, no herbicides

It's probably RRD. Even though you're in the city, there's a huge amount of RRD upwind of you. (And being inside a city is no protection, Brooklyn Botanical Garden surrounded by multistory buildings got it on their roses.
I haven't seen RRD on albas, but Liberto reported it on one about twenty years ago. When I asked him, he didn't remember what symptoms it had.
The closest thing I've seen to the form of your leaves was a RRD multiflora from the mountains of Virginia that just put out leaflets any old place on the leaf axil, as if it had forgotten to make symmetric leaves that matched the rest of the plant. And it was also hyperthorny and had short internodal distances. And the leaf margins didn't match the original leaves. And you've got a mottle distortion affecting the leaves as well.
Can you remove the part of the roots that supports these two canes?

I am also a Marylander and just had a case of RRD on Alba Konigin von Danemark. It looked quite different in my case.
