Rosa hugonis is medium yellow from everything I have ever seen. In bright sun it is nearly the same shade as when grown in a more shaded location. Rosa ecae is a relative which enjoys more dry conditions than hugonis but both roses come from mountainous regions.

I would expect that there are no species level roses anywhere that could be called true red. Most species hybrids which are red in color most likely have a red china rose in their genes somewhere.

That is the main reason gallicas, albas and damasks are all some shade of pink or white. Until gallicas and damasks were crossed with chinas enough times to create the portland-damask roses there were few red roses of any class. Once the portland-damasks were loose on the scene the true red hybrid perpetuals came along quickly.

All the native European roses are white through medium-light pink except for the species Rosa gallica, which is deep pink to medium pinkish red. The Gallica's color range was included within the concept of "red" in European languages, for example in the Greek root "rhod-" which gave their word for "red" and also "rose" (flower). So the old-timers thought they had "red" roses, but we've shifted the range of the English word as "pink" came into use. However, some of the natural Gallica tones might be classed as "medium red" by ARS.

Yellow roses came from Persia and eastward. I think only the China rose among species has tones that a modern English speaker would place within the range of "red." Deep crimson reds in Gallica cultivars and orangy-reds in hybrids emerged only in domesticated roses.

I don't know if anyone has Rosa moyessi but it has been called red, not in a pink way.
There is a rose, Alika, which is classified as a gallica, which I have from Suzy Verrier. It is vibrant deep red with an orange undertone. The pictures on helpmefind (as seen in my moniter) are not at all like the color of mine.
The discussion on helpmefind, linked below, explains some of the background of Alika. I would call it a true scarlet, and it may be eastern European, geographically.

Totally unused as sources of pigments are the Hulthemias. The original bushes which are scattered from the Levant as far east as China do have yellow flowers. Their splotches are deep reddish brown. And their regional variations in germplasm are relatively untouched.

(And setigera is a pink, and there are supposed to be doubles out there, but they may not have survived to the 21st century.)

For 'red', the place you need to look at is the old mauves like Tuscany. There is a feeling that some of those may be very, very old, and in fact naturally occuring species selections. The Elizabethans, understandably, referred to them as 'black' roses. Exactly what they were has been lost in history. However, it does seem to be colors that the gallicas are capable of producing without Oriental input.

You can expand yellows into Central Asia. R. hugonis is from central China.
