Looks like round up to me.

I suspect it may be Round Up also. I've seen that pale feathery growth before on a rose that has been exposed to herbicide. It does resemble RRD.

Of course if it shows other symptoms, you would need to reconsider.

I have had growth like that on a few of my roses too. I first thought it was RRD, but the rose soon outgrew this. I monitor it closely though, just in case. It may be something like weird spring growth. I think it may be caused by changes in water/temperature which causes a burst of weak growth. I don't think mine was caused by herbicide simply because of where it occured in my yard. I will add that, when I detected mine, it was only one "spot" on the cane.

Hmmmm. OK, I'll keep an eye on it. I just cut these off on Monday. We've had a dry August/September, but I use soaker hoses. The Baroness usually defoliates some in summer anyway since I don't spray. Hmmmmmm. OK, I'll try not to panic yet. It could be herbicide damage, but I haven't used Round-Up on the bermuda grass near the plant since spring. I did pour some vinegar on the bermuda last month in yet another effort to kill it. I suppose the damage could just now be showing up?

If this is herbicide damage, it doesn't have to have been caused by Round-up. A broadleaf weed killer (like Weed n Feed) will damage roses. This definitely looks like the symptoms of a plant trying to recover from some sort of herbicide. I've seen the same type of growth on honeysuckle and blackberry brambles that I've sprayed with Round-up.

Don't use the vinegar again if it's near your roses. It may not have caused this damage, but it will definitely hurt more than the grass you want to kill. The best thing I've found to kill Bermuda is Grass B Gon by Ortho -- also sold in concentrate as Ornamec, if you have a bigger job than can be taken care of with a premix in a squirt bottle. It's a selective, grass-only herbicide, that's labeled for use around roses. It can take a week or more to work, and the grass has to be actively growing at the time, but it is safe to use around your roses. Now that the wind had died down here today, I'll be out spraying some in my own roses beds today.

Thanks, Connie! In retrospect, I see that the vinegar was too close to the plant. I've been hand-digging the bermuda grass a lot, but the soil's been so dry (like concrete) it snaps off and I can't get it all--hence the chemical warfare. Live and learn--I hope the Baronne will forgive me!

I get these too, and not just on roses or around herbicides. Earlier Gardengal48 posted that there is a mite, I think it was that produced this effect on forsythia. I had a whole forsythia plant turn like this and die. Rose rosette disease also involves a mite.

Uh oh. Now I'm starting to fret about RRD again! I've already lost two beautiful, established roses to it this year. :'-(
