Moss recommendation and comments on Vintage ordert

Hi. After an area has lain fallow for 2 seasons from the Buff Beauty I lost to RRD, I think I want a moss in her place.

I recall smelling a moss rose once and the rose left a sticky piney scent on my fingers - I fell in love! Do all mosses have this scent? Might you know one that does?

Also, any comments on my tentative Vintage order so far?

If the rose we have found in some old cemeteries is (as we strongly suspect)

Jennifer, I love the mosses. Unfortunately the ones I want from Vintage are on a wait list :-(. I love mosses more and more. I have a new Chapeau de Napoleon and a new Fara Shimbo that I have high hopes for. I also have a pink dud, it has barely bloomed for the 4 years it's been here. I think it's either Salet or Louis Gimard. If you e-mail me, I have names of a couple other vendors that carry mosses.

I have noticed that the Vintage bands have a gravelly like composition to the bands when they arrive. Wonder if that could be the shale Lou is talking about? I have found that intead of rushing to pot the bands up in one gallon pots the minute they arrive, they seem to do better if I let them climitize about a week. I keep them out of them wind and protected from cold weather, put them on wire shelves in dappled sunlight. The ones I got from Rogue Valley are now just bursting out of their bands, ready to be potted [tomorrow]. Our weather is in the 50's at night, it got up to 81 today. I am seeing lots of new growth on the bands, but they are still looking like babies at this point - unlike the ones I got in November - those are getting really big, a few have buds [as do a couple of these newest bands - [by the way - I call them 'bands' even tho they are repotted into larger containers] This is why I want to be so careful in what I give them - do not even want to chance burning their young roots. And I definitely water well the day before fertilizing. I have several that are quite slow - still look like sticks with new leaves - I am really going to be careful with those.......not even sure if these should be fertilized or not?? Judith

Taoseeker, Thanks for the information on the European history with long term use of their most common rootstocks. I find it interesting and very useful and hope for long term good results - more vigorous root growth translating into more resilient bushes. I do remember seeing a number of times R. laxa use mentioned in the hybridizing experiments by the Canadian pioneer prairie hybridizer. One of the Skinners I have is apparently a cross with it and a pimpinefollia - sorry have not taken the time to check if it is Haidee Suzanne Butterball or all. Makes me wonder if that was the influence of their European ancestry, availability or factual superior hardiness - don't know but in 5 years I should. By the way very pleased to see very good cane survival for the first year on my Portland named Marie Jean I got from Lynnette last year when she gave up on it. Melissa, There is a gentleman in British Columbia I met through Lynnette who has made it a mission to collect and save Geschwinds. I need to let him know what I received and get him some cuttings. The two Canadian nurseries that I would be happy to share cuttings (gratis) that graft I have not approached as it gets too close to commercial for me and I would have to be absolutely sure that the roses are out of patent before even contact (most are over 100 years old so I am probably safe). However I sense both of them have absolutely the strictest of QA controls and would do it on their own so as to be sure of providence and disease free stock - if they survive winter and prosper I may contact them to guage their interest ... they both export to the States. Kaylah Hi, I was fortunate my Charles de Mills that I cover and is in the south gardens has 3 foot canes and lots of them ... problem is blooms are usually in short supply and last year I think I got 3. I leave it as it always grows well and takes to protection well. All my other dark gallicas are history except for the many exmaples of Belle d'Crecy I got as delambre - it also seems to survive well if covered ... but too much damage and the blooms are gone. All my cardinal Richelieu departed voluntarily over the years (3). Me I fool around with teas but only in pots and bring them in in October ... got a couple new ones this year. My FMkruger ... is a monster in zone 3 (hahhaha) and I think I must of got the most vigorous clone of this tea via Quebec. Kids you not take a cutting - stick in earth in the house and it takes like in February when I accidentally snapped a branch off ... now I got two with the younger being already at least foot high in 4 months and has gone through one bloom cycle. But the one I really miss is Mrs Schwartz ... almost as reliable as Mlle Franz Krueger (sp) ... forgot to take a cutting and over wintered her in the garage and she and all the other ones died - fortunately had cuttings for 3 of them in the basement to replace them - there as tall in two 365 day a year growing seasons as the originals.

nastarana, did you ever garden in the cold climate? I am just curious, since it is quite different from what it feels like for example in my current z8. One thing that you should pay attention to are zone letters, a and b, because that makes a HUGE difference in cold climate gardening, since usually problem is not only cold, but also moisture in the winter, sun and wind can be as bad as low temperatures. I suppose it really depends on what you want with your garden. Winter gardens and orangeries are not a new thing in cold climates, it was doable in centuries past, I am sure it can be done now, with so much better building materials when it comes to isolation. That would enable you to grow many more roses, but it is a garden in a closed environment, doesn't feel like you are outside. When it comes to the outside garden, no matter what, nature has her final say in it, which means that sooner or later you will learn that the main criteria of selecting your rose purchases is winter hardness. HTs may even not freeze that particular winter, but they will come back very weak and will eventually succumb to the elements. There are however a few hybrids that were hardy even in my z5 (z4 in a bad winter) and I am certain that there are more possibilities now, with online shopping and all. You can of course grow pretty HTs as annual plants, enjoy the summer bloom and don't worry about them freezing out in the winter. My mother usually buys a few potted greenhouse roses in the spring, places them on their balcony, enjoys them through the summer and just throws them out during the spring clean up.

KL, Your new kitchen is spectacular. Thank you so much for sharing in such detail. I am thinking I ought to do the same, as I am just at the planning stages of my project. I am wondering how your kitchen is holding up after 8 months. I am considering going with IKEA boxes and semi-handmade in my kitchen reno, but worry about the durability of the Ikea drawers, slides, and hinges. Are you still happy with them? Also I am curious about what cabinet material you chose. I am guessing that SemiHandmade in Flatsawn Walnut is a veneer, right? How is it looking 8 months on? I am trying to make my budget work and am tempted to save on cabinets because it's just such a big ticket item. Are you still happy with your choice? Also, how do you like the FP fridge?

Some of the Mosses are mossier, than others and they have more of the piney resin...I don't know any of the ones on your list...

I will second Rene D'Anjou-a superior moss with the best repeat of any of my repeating mosses so far with excellent clean foliage(repeating mosses tend to crud badly) that carries the same scent as the abundant moss on the buds. after a rain the scent carries on the air. My favorite moss is Nuits de Younge which is also well mossed-with reddish moss, but desn't repeat-the foliage is small deep green with reddish edges and makes a wonderful shurb when it isn't in bloom. I dont know how either of those would do for you with your summer heat.

I have the moss Alfred de Dalmas and in my hot dry climate even in full sun it fared better than some of my other roses. Unfortunately this rose falls apart very quickly because it has so few petals. The blooms might last longer in a cooler climate. This rose is also known as Mousseline. For me it doesn't have a very strong scent. I've ordered Salet in hopes that it will have better blooms.

I have Lady Mary Fitzwilliam, Lady Alice Stanley, and Union Redwood Cemetery -- all came here this spring. Lady Mary and Union Redwood are small, but growing -- I expect to be better able to comment on them next year. Lady Alice Stanley is a star in my antique HT garden out front. You will love her.

Wow Connie - thanks for the invitation, how kind. : ) I'd love nothing more to see your lovely place in person (I checked out the link from your My Page.) I'll be in a wedding, but would rather be sniffing roses, quite frankly. ; )

Glad to hear Lady Alice stanley is a good one. I'm pretty sure a 1940's mystery rose in my yard is Lady Mary Fitz, so I can't wait to see the first bloom next spring, but I ordered Lady Alice just to be sure as her description matches my rose. I have ordered and ruled out: Dame Edith Helen, Mrs. EG hill, and Betty Uprichard. (I too love found/lost roses!)

I don't know how these will do in your climate, but I like the following mosses:

'William Lobb' is once-blooming, rather large and lanky, purple, mossy, fragrant, tough, and, to my surprise, easy to grow from cuttings.

'Alfred de Dalmas' is a modest rose, but pleasant in every way and also easy to grow, color pale pink, reblooming, in my garden about three-four feet, but my roses lead a hard life. Easy to root from cuttings.

I love 'Crested Moss', but it's not actually a moss, and doesn't have that moss scent. It's a beautiful, fragrant rose, classic pink, once-blooming, with highly intriguing sepals. I've never succeeded in rooting it. It has long arching canes that can benefit from support, and in its period of bloom is as beautiful as any rose that ever grew in a garden. In Olympia, WA, I grew it next to

'Capitaine John Ingram', small, double soft purple flowers with a button eye, rather dark upright shrub in my experience, fragrant, once-blooming. This rose doesn't make much of an effect at a distance, but deserves that you take out a chair and sit and stare at it up close at frequent intervals when it's in bloom, because it's unique and wonderful and lovely.

These are some of my favorites, and they're all healthy for me, BUT I've never grown them in areas with high disease pressure, and it's entirely possible they might defoliate pitifully for you. You need to check that out locally. I also hear great things about 'Common Moss', but just got it last year and don't yet know much about it.
