Please explain morning sun only and still affected by hot summer temperatures. How wide is the space?

FWIW, I have plenty of roses that get half day sun only as they are located on the east or west walls of my house. Most of them love that orientation, with the exception of Belinda's Dream, which seems to want a blast furnace location, where it excels and is less leggy. Almost any hybrid musk would do the job for you, unless the space is too narrow.
I have a Poulsen rose, Sophia Renaissance, which is buff yellow fading toward cream and grows to about 6.5 feet each year. The rebloom is better than any climber, the plant flawlessly clean, with an upright but well-leafed growth habit. I have sustained low canes by resisting the temptation to prune off low growth. Mine is located at my front door, where it is shaded until 11 AM and after about 4PM. I got it from Vintage gardens on its own roots. It does like a little pruning (I take it down to 3-4 feet every winter). The stems are very long, usually 20-24 inches, and the scent is somewhat sweet, honey-like. The blooms range from many petals in cool weather to just double and very short in the heat of the summer. It's a patent rose, so it's going to be hard to come by, Pickerings looks like the only reliable source for you.

With a beige house, I'd go with a pink rose. Don't you already have Heavenly Pink, the Louis Lens hybrid musk? What's wrong with it in this location? Don't believe the 3 foot height shown on HMF. No way any Seagull seedling is going to be 3 feet. That has to be the size once it's been butchered by extreme pruning.

I just planted Illusion this year with the suggestion from Olga. It is in the shade until about noon, then all sun on the west wall, gets some shade fron the neighboring bushes. This is the first year, so I can not tell how well it will flower. So far it has been blooming in flushes with moderate amount of flowers. The folliage is nice and shiny, with many strong canes; already about three feet tall. The flower color is cherry red, medium to larger size with good fullness, carried in clusters. The cluster is somewhat too tight. So far very healthy.

Cass, I have a somewhat unique microclimate caused by a combination of higher elevation, steep, bare hillsides with huge boulders that radiate heat, some very close to the house, and for this climber two stucco house walls at right angles to each other, in the angle of which this rose will be located. As far as space goes, canes could be trained across the sunnier wall about 12 feet if they were somewhat flexible. I've been giving some thought to Cl. Lady Hillingdon but don't know how well she would tolerate shade. A pink rose would be nice but I do have Betty Prior nearby. Jeri, I've had Buff Beauty before but even in full sun it did not rebloom very well for me. I've researched Renae some more and it seems not to have the long canes I would need.

Ingrid, how long did you have Buff Beauty.

It's one of those roses that will bloom more as it matures. In the Sacramento City Cemetery last week, it was in good bloom, with a lot of buds getting ready to open.

It's a hard thing to make yourself do, but in many cases, you won't have a good reading on a rose until you've grown it AT LEAST 4-5 years.

And through convoluted pathways, that reminds me to ask if you have considered 'Lavender Dream.?

Are you going to re-home your Casino?

Jeri, I don't remember, it's been so long, but I doubt that I had Buff Beauty much more than three years. Also, even though it's a lovely rose, I did not love it. I have Lavender Dream, which is building up to be a beautiful shrub, in another location and I love it, but I'm afraid it would be much too wide and shrubby for the spot I have available.

Hoovb, I hadn't considered recycling Casino for lack of takers in my area and my circle of friends. If you or anyone else here would like to have it you're welcome to come and pick it up. I do love the flowers but the rose as a whole doesn't present a very attractive picture, and for me it's usually about the plant and not just the flowers, unless the rose blooms a lot, which Casino does not do for me.

Renae does have long canes if it is trained. One of mine is growing up into a Paul's Himalayan 10 feet. My Lavender Lassie, which is in morning shade suprised me by growing into an oak(I didn't ask it to!)

If Renae were on sale right now at Vintage I would most probably order it but unfortunately it's only available custom root. I already have an order started there and this climber will make up the required four per package, and I'm afraid I'd never have the patience to wait for a custom root. If it does become available as a regular item, I'd be hard pressed not to buy it.

I usually refrain from suggesting roses for your warm sunny climate Ingrid. But Climbing Lady Hilidon sounds perfect to me. Mine is only 10 feet tall and gets very little sun (dappled shade and only about 2 hours of direct sun) I grow it a shelthered corner shaded by trees. But still it blooms well (one cold winter and it will be gone here - I know that! but the last 5 winters have been very mild and I experienced very little freeze back. It would be the rose I would try if I was you. Madame Bérard could also be a possibility.

My Buff Beauty (grown as a climber on a fence) grew and grew beautiful lush foliage and canes, but did not bloom until its 4th year. Although was an extremely vigorous plant with thick thorny canes. lush foliage and very fragrant gold-copper-beige flowers, it was not a reliable bloomer until the 4-5th year. Quite a vigorous rose, magnificent shrub which needed quite a bit of room to sprawl.

Niels, your comments about Lady Hillingdon are most encouraging. I grew one before in another garden and loved it but it was in full sun so I had no idea how well it would respond to a shaded position. This is valuable information for me and I really appreciate it.

Luxrosa, because of the color of the wall I don't think a white rose would look well but I'm glad to know that Renae is considered to be good in the shade. I'll have to look up Katharine Harrop since I've forgotten what she looks like, although I'm pretty certain she's pinkish or peach. Thanks so much for your suggestions.

Mudbird, having grown Buff Beauty, I know she's a sprawler and would look good draped over a retaining wall but she's out of the question for the allocated space I have. I didn't realize it took so long for her to bloom consistently.

Oh, by all means, go with Renae! Mine is coming along with some considerable shade. What a terrific rose! The scent is divine, the health unsurpassed.

Did you call Burling at Burlington Roses near Visalia? She worked for Ralph Moore for years. She's the one to ask about Renae.
