JP Bankruptcy rose avalibility question

I know this Bankruptcy has been going on for a while but haven't really thought about it till today & how there could be a rose shortage. I called my only (good) local nursery just now & they told me they wont have ANY david austins next year, & thats what Ive been counting on. They have 2 that I wanted so they are holding them, but they have/had BS & look cruddy so I am told.

Will HD & Lowes & others have mass shortages of roses?

I would rather get a fresh rose next year, but will it be there to get?

I don't see any reason to panic as far as this coming season. Specifically, the judgement to consolidate all of the companies into one entity was to facilitate publishing & release of their catalog. They have said that they will stay in the area, keep the employees, etc. Blackstreet, the new owner, has a history of keeping businesses true to what they were organized to do, so I don't foresee them halting production or disposing of any inventory. Could just be that your local suppliers haven't been able to contact J&P to coordinate next year's delivery in the midst of the confusion right now....or that they are afraid to try, or wary of new ownership.

This is something completely different. David Austin decided a year or two ago not to renew their propagation contracts. When I had lunch with the Star rep last December, he confirmed that 2010 was the last year Star would be able to carry Austins. I haven't heard anything about what effect this has on Pickering, but I'd expect the only source for new(ish) Austins to be David Austin in Texas.

Thanks for your commments, roseblush1 and maryl. I did actually give my 2012 rose orders information on another thread here recently. Roseblush, I don't know if you were referring to that or not. It's not much, as I have neither much space nore much money. But I just acquired Don Juan and Quietness, as noted above. I'm waiting on ordering for spring until spring in order to give the local nurseries a shot at my business. Then I might order something. I'm definitely planning to buy another Peace rose, which I haven't grown in the past decade. I'm "probably" also going to get Buxom Beauty. Of course, spring will be too late for bareroot roses, but in my climate I often order potted roses, anyway. Maryl, I agree Vet's Honor is truly an excellent red rose. I have to say though that the color is not its best quality, to me. It is absolutely straight-up red, but not the richest red I've seen. the blooms, though, are huge, and consistently over excellent form. One thing that gives me pause is just how much space it will require, since it is such a robust spreading grower. the one source I still am aware of for it is K&M roses in Buckatuna, MS. A Great nursery! I can actually drive out there, though it would be a long day trip. I hesitate to get VH here, because the rootstock is fortuniana, which is great, but tends to produce even bigger rose bushes, and all mine are in pots, plus they don't have much space to spread out. I think Vet's Honor is such a well-established popular variety, that either JP will be back to selling it in a couple years when their bankruptcy reorganization is settled, OR other vendors will pick it up. Worst case scenario is that I'll have to wait until the patent expires; then we'll see other nurseries selling it. I know, a lot of nurseries are struggling, and some may not still be aorund, but I have to think there will continue to be a rose industry, and we might even see some newcomers in a few years when the economy eventually claws its way back. (knock on wood.) Pride of England is from Heirloom Roses, which I could easily order from in the spring. I'm inclined to go for it, maybe partly because no one here stateside seems to grow it. If it grows well in Spain, as HMF indicates, it should be able to handle the Gulf Coast Climate. I'd still love it if someone notices this thread who happens to grow it and they chime in.

I think the test fields are moving to Ohio simply because Gardens Alive is located there and that is where their other R&D facilities are. Makes sense to have it all in one place - and saves money. Gardens Alive bid for J&P and even though their offer was, I believe, more than Blackstreet it was not accepted because they would not guarantee they would keep the all the jobs in South Carolina where Parks Seed and Wayside are. Too bad as I think they would have been better owners. Personally I think Weeks is in good hands. Garden's Alive have good people there who actually know something about the plant industry. Keith Zary is a good example. I don't know if Tom Carruth is staying with Weeks but hopefully he is. Christian Bedard also knows his stuff. IMO California mainly grows large roses because of Dr. Huey. It simply pushes larger plants. But Dr. Huey does not do well in my area (or most areas this side of the country) and keep in mind since it cannot be grown from seed RMV is a result of it being used. Personally I'd be happy to see it vanish as a rootstock. There is a lot of growing in Arizona these days and I suspect we'll see more there. And don't count out Tyler, TX. But I think in the end that won't matter. The trend is heavily towards own-root and towards liners finished in pots. Much of the public and quite a few garden centers don't want to deal with bareroots. At best I think we'll see one year field grown own-root crops for wholesale use but I'm not holding my breath on that continuing either. As to retail I think you'll see more and more 2 quart pots being used for mail order - even from the big boys. The traditional bareroot budded crop takes two years from planting to harvest. That means you are attempting to guess what the rose market will be in two years. Think of all those growers who planted crops in the winter spring of 2007/2008 for fall 2009 harvest and spring 2010 sales only to see the bottom fall out in September of 2008. By then the planting of the understock and budding (read the most expenses) were spent for a crop that was now likely going to never sell. With liner production you are almost producing on demand and that means you can react to the market far more quickly and keep losses under control. And conversely bring in larger profits if a rose, or the rose market, heats up. I think the changes in nursery ownership and nurseries closing aren�t the only big changes we are in the midst of. Paul

Thanks for that, Kim. I've been in a unique position for watching the development of both Weeks and J&P. I live about a half-mile from the old J&P "Research Facility" -- which is where Keith Zary, and John Walden, and others worked their magic. What an exciting place that was. I was also able, on a couple of occasions to visit Weeks old facility, out in Upland. Tom Carruth was -- and is -- a friend. What I see happening now is a flat tragedy. As far as I'm concerned J&P no longer exists. What remains of Weeks is -- not the company I knew and admired. For Weeks to deal with that outbreak of a terrible disease and try to cover it up -- and then ship that material out to other growers (to potentially contaminate THEIR stock ... that was appalling. Now, I"m an Old Rose person -- so there is nothing J&P OR Weeks have to offer now that I would be interested in buying. As for Weeks, it breaks my heart to say this, but . . . At this point in time, with the water that's floated under the bridge, I wouldn't buy ANY roses from either Weeks or J&P. (ir any of the other companies to which Weeks sent budwood). And if I wanted them that bloody much, well . . . I would have to have a safe containment area where I could grow those roses in self-applied quarantine for four years. Maybe 5.

For Sale: Metal Tag maker, no electricity required. Good way to build arm muscles. No rose tags included, but I might have a variety of naughty lady "Social Security Id Card Blanks." (remember back when you used to carry that little paper card in your wallet and wanted that nifty personalized metal one) (and if only I was not kidding and the "proud" owner of such a machine-my parents from back in the swapmeet days)

DA is 'selecting' a few nurseries to carry his stock. I went to a local nursery and they had just started carrying DA's. This is a very nice garden center - as far away from a big box store as you could get. And I've asked Chamblees - they will be carrying DAs still.

David Austin actually had an exclusive contract for next year to sell DA roses through Target, and then Target decided to close all of its garden centers nationwide in Sept 2010, so that deal is off too.

And the "no DA roses from other sources" applies only to the ones to which DA was entitled to assert intellectual property rights -- it does not apply to the oldest varieties for which DA in general never even applied for intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks on the name usage, etc); and it doesn't apply to any where the patents have expired already. So, Chamblees, Pickering, etc, can continue to carry those roses, at least.

And the new roses by DA are not necessarily better than the old ones. DA has been accused by more than one knowledgeable rosarian of "replacing" an older variety with a newer one where the only advantage the newer one had over the old one was a current patent or trademark.

I'm by no means a knowledgeable rosarian, and even so when I've perused the Austins listed at HelpMeFind I can't help but be struck at how many nearly identical peach/apricot/salmon pink roses he's released.

If you want a DA rose, though, you really don't need to worry about whether you can get it at your local nursery. just order it online somewhere. (if you have to, just order it from DA itself)

Re the David Austin roses, some of us prefer Austins either on multiflora rootstock or ownroot and DA Ltd offers neither.
I've been trying to find out what might be available from Canada, but they are late to put up their lists this year.

I wish I knew in Feb/March this was the last year for Star to carry DA. The nursery confirmed they got their DA from star. I came home with 3 today, Golden Celebration, Molineux, & Mary rose @ $9 each. The others I want I think are all off patent so hopefully lowes/HD will have them bareroot, otherwise I will buy them online as some have suggested.

A lot of nurseries order directly from DA so availability shouldn't be a problem. If your local only orders from Star or Weeks than you're out of luck.

They said they could get them from other places including direct from DA but they said for the amount of plants they would order it would cost them too much per rose & wouldn't be profitable to them.

How long does a patent on a rose last?

Plant patents are now 20 years.
Used to be 17, but Nafta caused the change.
