Garden power tools/ mulching

I'm a new/first-time homeowner and I am completely ignorant to all things garden/yard related. I have a mower that was given to me that I am using right now, but nothing else to help maintain.I have 2 items that I am looking to get and was hoping to get advice/recommendations on both.

The first is an edger/trimmer combo and the other is a garden blower/vac. I know I want cordless as I hate messing with the gas and extra care required with the traditional units.

For the edger, I see mostly ones that use a string of some sort. I have seen a few that have dedicated blades like mowers do, which makes sense to me, but do not seem to be as popular/as much choice. Is there a reason for this? What are peoples experience when comparing both types?

For the blower/vac, most I see remark about being able to clean up hard surfaces. Well, I would like to be able to use mine to blow/suck up leaves from the actual lawn where most of them fall, not just the drive way. I would assume everyone else would like that too??!!...so what's the deal with that?...are there any that are designed for both? Is it a power issue or just a design thing?

Also, I am not opposed to investing into a brand that has interchangeable heads/attachments and picking up a few batteries to ensure I can use them all, one after the over. This is to eliminate overall cost and also to try and save space as my garage has limited extra space. Plus I would like to pick up a hedge trimmer and maybe other parts later to use.

Just FYI, I have about a half acre lot (if that makes any difference). So figure I don't want entry-level junk but am not trying to go all crazy either.

The one last thing I wanted to mention was about the flower beds. I am in a neighborhood mostly with retirees with all the time on their hands to manicure their gardens and gossip about how bad mine looks.The mulch that was there from the previous owner has mostly gone away. Personally, I don't mind if it's just straight up earth around the flower beds, but everyone else either puts mulch or pine straw down. I am not a big fan of either due to the upkeep and also the potential for inviting additional bugs in to the environment. Pebbles are out of the question, but have heard of rubber mulch. I realize that this is more expensive up-front, but wondered if it would pay off over time and wanted to know about people's experience on all of these fronts.

Take a look at the Stihl battery Kombi line. I like Stihl and if I could, I'd buy their hedge trimmer yesterday. I really like their gas tools but with all the problems with ethanol and small engines, I'd go electric. Was given a Worx edger for Christmas it's still in the box. I've used my parents, not strong enough for their grass compared to my Stihl. Get an extra battery. Keep both charged. When my gas tools have reached their lifespan, this is the line I'm switching too.

I mulch leaves back into the grass, after I've filled my compost bins. Blowers are designed for both types of surfaces. Depending on how many leaves you have in the fall will determine what you do. I have enough to compost and mulch back. It's good for the grass. I might do one day for compost and one day for the yard. Depends on thickness of the leaves and if I have room in the bins.

I like a blade edger, nice quick job, no sneaking up. I use string at my house because I have a little edging and lots of weed eating. I use the blade to do the 100 ft driveway at my parents.

I use pine straw under my acid loving plants and bark mulch every where else. I put it on thick because weeding everything would be a nightmare. Hire a teen in the fall and spring to help me out, and it's done in no time. Don't know much about rubber mulch, family used it, weeds came up and it was a nightmare. Friends used it - was great for a year or two and they had a weed nightmare, it also washed out into their yard after a torrential storm. It won't degrade so we had a mulch gathering party. Both put landscape fabric down first. I don't use landscape fabric in my flower beds. I don't take old mulch off. I keep a four inch minimum thickness. Reduces my watering and weeding. Did I mention I'm lazy and was working 60 - 70 hours a week? We had onslaught of mosquitoes so I let the mulch decompose and tried just the soil. We still had those nasty little biters and I had a ton more weeds. Couldn't keep up, went back to thick mulch.

If neighbors are complaining, see if they'll help, give advice, etc. probably they will come around. You may have to change your landscaping to fit your lifestyle. Get with a landscape designer. We have one that will help you plan out in years so everything is affordable. There is probably one in your area too. Try one of the local colleges if they have some horticulture classes.

Chef Wil - You are an inspiration. Always an idea of now to get around the probems we face. May I please ask a favour. I have just visited your cascading herb garden. Is it possible to either change the background or the colour of the font, as I find it impossible to read the way it is. The white writing is just perfect, however, when you change to black??? I am unable to see it at all. I tried to access the other site, but it would not open (not unusual for my computer) LOL !! Just one more question. Building a cascading fall here is impossible, however, I was wondering, do you think I might achieve a small portion of your results if I tried to plant the Herbs you mentiond in a bird bath, or are the herbs planted on the dry earth just on the sides. Don't you just HATE that! We learned a long time ago to not loan out our stuff, either. Because once they get the ok, they're back every weekend, and pretty soon, we lose track of what they didn't return, or what they broke, etc. I have a hard enough time keeping my stuff in good shape (yep, I'm a total slacker!) without others helping me destroy it. :) Not sure how much rain we got here, since we were in Tomales, but it was really coming down on I-80 on the way over there! Then....we got home yesterday to more brutal, drying winds. I love the rain, but I hate the winds that always seem to come after. Brenda

Thanks for the feedback, lazy_gardens! Don't worry I won't strip the forests down if I do gather some from there. I've got an old cabin that I've been working on for *years* and the grounds around it really need clearing. Also, a clear-cut down the road has a lot of waste (don't they always!) that I could gather some from and wouldn't make a dent in it. We'll see... :) I was thinking that cutting the 50' rows in half with a path *was* creating a shortcut to the other side of the rows. ;) The idea of a stepping stone mid-25' row might work, though. Thanks for the idea! As for the irrigation line... I'm figuring on having two lines going down each bed hoping that will be enough. If that's not enough I can add another line. What I'm torn between is whether to go with poly-tubing drip-line or to go with drip-tape. They both have their pros and cons. The tape would need to be replaced more often but it is much less expensive and replacing it would put all new emitters into play. But, the durability of the tubing is attractive, too. It appears that the 1/2" tubing has a much longer run/flow to it than the 1/4" tubing does. It seems the 1/2" would be stiffer and a bit more trouble to position but probably(?) more durable and is capable of longer runs. Looking at the quantity of tape/tubing I figure I need 400' to run two lines per bed. The package that I linked to at Berry Hill has 1000' of tape which would give me a "spare" application of lines plus a couple of hundred feet for repairs/additions. But, I certainly don't need a SFG size kit...it will have to be a sizable one. Paths...I've thought of the cardboard and pinestraw....seems until the cardboard gets good and wet that might be a slippery surface. :) But, I may end up going that route. I'm also thinking of trying some Dutch clover between a few rows and see if that works out...our heat might do it in, though, during the middle of summer. Deer... Well, I tilled an "apron" around the garden proper yesterday...a DMZ to combat the bahia that will inevitably attempt invasions. Overnight the deer had to check that fresh ground out. I'm afraid that the row covers would simply be an amusement for the deer...something to scratch their ears while they dine on fresh veggies. I think I'm going to need a physical barrier for them...8' fence. Or, maybe a shorter double electric fence. On a bright note...I started pressure canning meat last year...I've done beef, chicken, and pork. It might be getting time to try deer. ;) Ed

lol, well I've posted many garden photos on GW over the years but you know I don't even take many anymore. I used to take photos every month of the year and put them into my picture file folders. I looked last night and the last time I took good photos was in 2018. Several months in 2019, and just a few in 2020! I guess as I age, so does my garden and I'm downsizing instead of planting more and more. In November, there is not much see. Altho Fall is one of my favorite times at my place. I can post some from 2018 if you wish or wait until next year. Oh and the orchard was an apple tree orchard years ago that my Uncle planted but by the time I bought the place and for several years after the old trees succumbed without his care and I'm left with one original. I still call it "the orchard".
