Best method/materials for added gravel path on side of house?
Comments (4)Once the tree is out and your drainage issue is taken care of, the right kind of grass might grow just fine. Otherwise, decomposed granite might be a good solution there....See MorePath Ology
Comments (13)Thank you all for your input and suggestions. Fortunately, the walkways will not require snow clearing and we have a set of small rocks we intend to edge the pathways with. We have laid down organic pre-emergent weed control and we will have landscaping fabric on the paths as well. In terms of why I am between a rock and a hard place... *sigh* Well, after putting my life on hold for two years to build a house and then having to spend hundreds of hours I do not have clumsily doing a job I thought I hired a "professional" to do, I am done. I guess I have finally gotten to the point where I refuse to spend one more hour beating my head against the wall trying to find a material that is ecological-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, low maintenance, and cost effective. I have canvassed every gravel and rock company within 25 miles, and my landscaper has brought me 9 different samples, none of which I would put in my yard even if it were free. Sorry for the rant, but there it is. The sand wasn't a serious consideration, but it was offered, and it just highlighted for us how ridiculous this has all become. I countered that since we have three cats, maybe we should look into lining the paths with kitty litter. ;) Anyway, since I had run out of time and options, I thought I would avail myself of your collected wisdom. The idea of pavers or stepping stones is a good one, so I appreciate that. At our previous house, the person who sold us the house had put in river rock on all the paths, which was at total pita as you can imagine. Having round pavers in that mix made it much more tolerable....See MoreMore than One Material for Potager Paths?
Comments (3)Thanks for your replies! I truly appreciate your thoughts on the paths subject. I spent the better part of today putting together a chunk of the garden. I have a whole lot to do yet, but I will post pics when it's reasonably together. I still haven't decided on stone vs. mulch vs. whatever for part of the garden, but your input has been very helpful. Thanks again -...See MoreAm I "enabling" the chipmunks?
Comments (28)Well, I stand corrected. I went back out to the garden this evening and it was there again.....but it was a hawk. It was so large and quiet in its flight, I thought it was an owl. But this is probably better, since they hunt in the daytime, when most of the rodents are out. Even though I'm frustrated with the chipmunks, I don't want to see it when/if it happens. gumby......yeah, coons are VERY frustrating. I know they must come into our big fenced-in yard at night. I quit feeding the birds in the back yard long ago because the coons would come for the dropped seeds, then they'd go up in the trees right outside the bedroom window and fight with each other. On one of the reviews for the solar owl, one person said it helped get rid of the coons. I'm not sure how reliable some of those reviews are though. I'll let you know how this one works. I'm thinking I need a couple, since my garden is about 40x25. I've been picking all my tomatoes before they are completely ripe, so that I at least get some before they're taken. This year is really strange. I've never had the coon or the chipmunk problem in the garden before. Maybe next year will be different. Good luck with your coons! They are too smart for their own britches. ;)...See MoreFireraven9
