So Discouraged

The Japanese Beetles arrived as usual on or around the 4th of July and are still here. That's almost 2 full months. Is it me, or is that longer than it used to be? I have tried Milky Spore a couple of times in the past, and this year I tried Grub Control on the lawn, but the beetles seem to be just as bad as ever, and that's with diligent hand-picking. Every year I go out at least 2 times a day to pick the lousy things.

Between the JBs, the rose slugs, the regular slugs, the red lily beetles which do just as much damage to my lilies as the JBs do to my roses, and last but not least, the weeds, I swear that sometimes it seems like my gardening consists of more killing than growing things. I know winter is coming and spring will follow with fresh, new foliage and a new start (hope springs eternal), but right now I'm sick of chewed foliage and masses of writhing green-and-brown beetle bodies.
