I'm so deeply sorry for what's happened to you. It sounds as though you've been through much personal travail and the pleasure you had in this rose would have been a part of a return to normalcy and enjoyment of the beauty around you. Now you're having to grieve again and that's a cruel thing. I have La Reve and I was amazed at how quickly this rose grew to a respectable size. It seems to really respond to applications of alfalfa meal.

I hope the pain of this loss will lessen soon. A rose that grew like a weed for me was E. Veyrat Hermanos. Might that be another consideration?

Do you dialog with this person? Maybe they did not know that it would kill the whole plant and that he may owe you for the cost of replacement. I know they can trim what encroaches.

I'm so sorry that happened. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your neighbor, this surely won't help! When you've had some time and perspective you can decide what to do. Do you think the neighbor didn't appreciate the rose as you do and sprayed their side? What a shame!

Yes, he knew what he was doing. Last summer he took a saw and started hacking at the canes. We were outside and told him to please stop and we would be happy to prune the part branches growing through the top of the fence.

It's kind of complicated. This guy rents the house out. He bought it about 4 years ago. We have been here for 15 years. The land down there is really city owned land as it was supposed to be made into an alley but never was. This was in to late teens, early 20's. It really isn't wide enough to be an alley is probably why it was never made into one and has basically been abandoned by the city. The access to this strip is only through a driveway of a neighbor's house up the street, since all the houses on our street use and maintain this land as part of their yards. It is not part of the legal description of the parcels however, and while the city legally owns it, they do not maintain it. Our house was built in 1926, all the houses on our street were built in the 20's and 30's. All of the houses on our street at some point in time over the last 80 years "took" that strip of land that the city owns as part of their yards. The street behind us that backs up to our yards is a different development of small bungalow homes built in the late 50's, early 60's. This street is topographically "below" us, so their backyards have steep slopes up to our back yards. When we bought our house there was a fence back there probably put up in the 40's, basically held up by the ivy growing on it. We are the 3rd owner of this house since it was built and the people we bought it from did not put up that fence. What we did was build another fence IN Front of the old existing one. This guy then tore the original one down so he gained a couple of feet of city land. At the time about 4 years ago, this neighbor had just bought the house behind us. He dug up the back and poured cement so there is not a speck of grass, and left just the weeds growing up the slope. He told my husband that he wanted 1/2 of the city alley footage and my husband told him no. That it has been this way for at least 60 years. It really wouldn't have done him any good anyway because he only would have gained less than 10 feet at the top of the slope. He doesn't even live there, he rents that house out! A couple of months ago between renters, I saw through the fence a big sprayer bottle of round up. I didn't put two and two together. But now I know what he did.

Technically, the rose wasn't growing onto HIS property. If you could see his backyard, you would wonder why it would bother him to see some beautiful rose blossoms waving at the top of the fence.

Last summer he moved his family into the house while they remodeled their own. That was when he "sawed" off the canes. They ate outside every night, and I watched from upstairs one evening as they dumped the scraps from their plates right into their backyard! No wonder we had such a skunk problem last year. He did this on purpose. Nasty nasty man.

What I have to say about your neighbor is not fit to print. I am so very sorry for you. He had to have done it deliberately to spray that high. It is conceivable on a windy day drift but I think not. A rose could recover if it had only been a little drift, it would depend.

I can sure understand your heartbreak. Mine only got something else, and I don't think it was deliberate, and it still hurts, the memory of the consolation that brought to my life, small though it might seem to others.

There is really nothing I can say that will make you feel any better but that I understand completely what a crushing blow that was. I don't know what you should do. The worst of it is the sentimental value and all the years of labor and love you put into it, and no price can be put on the pleasure that rose brought to you. I'd be crying, too.

Better not say any more, hard for me to forgive bad people like that and then have to go on seeing them every day. Hope they move, the sooner the better.

Firstly, I am sorry about all your health problems, and hope you are on the mend, with a good prognosis.

Somehow, the word 'nasty' just doesn't cut it when describing this barbarian. As others have said, I hope he moves far, far away from you. No one needs this kind of stress in their lives. Good luck.

I can see why she was your favorite rose. How beautiful she was! Perhaps she can be saved?
Since your neighbor is renting, I would call the landlord. Let him know that if the renter does any more damage to your property, you will hold them liable.
So sorry to hear of your health problems. I know how much you must have been looking forward to rejuvenating in your beautiful garden. If Rev doesn't make it, perhaps you can turn your energy into nurturing a new rose. Good luck.

The owner is the one doing the spraying, not the tenant.

Your Reve may not be dead. I accidently sprayed my RdO with Round up and a few of the canes were damaged and had to be removed, but after a few months, it was fine. You may be able to save it.

We could rant about this 'person' all day. What you should do is make sure anything you plant against the fence doesn't cross over or between the fence. Then he can't do anything.

Don't let the bad guys defeat you. Build a structure in front of the fence so that he can't get to the rose, and plant a new Reve d'Or. Just remember the many, many of us here cheering you on. Endure and overcome! You can do it!

I'm so sorry to hear about your rose! And about all that you are going through. I know what the chemo experience is like, its so rough, and you need lots and lots of roses to help you get well! I can't believe anybody would be so mean, there just must be something wrong with this guy. I hope you will get yourself a new Reve d'or! I bet Ashdown or Vintage might carry it, and would send you a big healthy baby that would just take off (you should get yourself a few extra roses, too, while you are at it!) Reve is a tea, isn't it? Don't they grow really fast in your warm climate? I bet the new baby would be a glorious specimen in no time! Take care!

This is exactly what happened to my noisettes, but I know they were not poisoned nor rounded up. Otherwise, there would have been dozens of other roses with the same fate. I only had noisettes that happened to including Reve d'Or and huge Crepuscule plants. I was told by the county agent service that it was a blight and that many people in my area had had the same thing happen with plants, including cherry trees, etc. I just thought it was strange that it was only the noisettes.

Thank you everyone for your kind support. I feel much better today! So much of the garden chores have gone undone and I was feeling so discouraged. Hubby helped me yesterday and I worked a good part of the day today, well I putzed today and wasted alot of time, but things definitely look a little better. Terrible infestation of spider mites yet again this year, I don't know why I get them so bad every year.

I looked into California Civil Code, and while it is permissible to trim overhanging branches off of a fence, killing a tree or plant is specifically prohibited. We've decided to write him a letter letting him know that in the future to let us know if anything grows over and we will be happy to trim the plant, and we are going to quote the Civil Code to him, just so he knows he cannot do this again without big consequences. I have Teasing Georgia just down a ways on the same fence and I gave her a good trim yesterday since some rose blossoms were dangling over the fence. This sounds awful, but I would much rather he sprayed Teasing Georgia than Rev. Oh well...

I trimmed off more of the dead canes and laterals from Rev and I couldn't believe it, she has put out some buds!! I don't know if this is a good thing or a last gasp or what. Poor thing looks really pathetic with her mutated growth and black canes.

You are all so right! This guy doesn't deserve any of more my emotion spent on him. There are better things in life. And other roses to be planted. And important things to do. Right now I have to get these spider mites under control! LoL!

I am so sorry for your loss. This is a beautiful rose. I know the feeling of losing roses that you love but this has to be just a feeling of disgust when someone does it with malice.

two, a few months ago, I had to cut down my huge Teasing Georgia because the trellis it was on became damaged during a wind storm. I was devastated. But you know what? After a few weeks, probably because the base of the rose was now getting direct sunlight, this thing began pumping out canes! I now have about 15 canes that are at least 5 feet tall! I hope I can get it on a new trellis when I finally get around to getting one. Roses are very strong. I doubt round up will kill it out right. I bet in a few weeks or next year, it will be glorious.

Hi, very sorry to hear about the poisoned bush.
Your neighbour is a very bad man, but please don't get upset about it, because that causes injury to your health, for no good reason. That bad man - stole from himself, and stole from all of us - but he is just a typical person. If bush had been killed by insect predators, probably you would not be so upset, so try to frame this crime in such as way as you do not suffer any personal injury to your health over it. one time one of my neighbours chased a squirrel into his attic, and got so worked up over it he died of a massive heart attack...I know it's hard, but if you think: he stole from himself, I find that helps. at least it helped me, when some similar bad man, simply helped himself to my bushes and dug up four of them, and simply stole them! I just told myself, that man just stole from himself. I gave him a gift of a rose to look at, but he was not grateful, he wanted more, and by doing this, he stole from himself. sometimes it is so sad to be a person and to realize what hideous random crimes we are capable of. sometimes we show our strength more, by turning the other cheek.
