I don't think we really need a separate forum, but it might be good to have a decent thread going on black soldier flies. I compost all my family's humanure and I really don't think I could be persuaed to use it to raise black soldier flies instead, but I have toyed with trying to set up a system for converting kitchen scraps to bsf larvae to raise fish with, or maybe just feed to the chickens.

So, does anyone here have any experience? I don't know of anyone near where I live who raises them, but I know they are around. Any tips on building a maggot-farm, or how to 'catch' wild ones?

Forum : a medium (as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas.

Form : a printed or typed document with blank spaces for insertion of required or requested information (tax forms).

Note the difference in spelling of the two words and the difference in meaning of the two words.

There is a vermicomposting forum and there have been some great discussions about BSF larvae on that forum in the past.

Yes, but those talks on the vermicomposting forum are in the wrong form and are off topic of the forum that is meant to talk about worms and only worms. No grubs, insects, and ect. should be posted on the vermicomposting forum because they are not on topic of worms. Kind of like this article telling you that there are many off-topic forms in the wrong spot. Like the Black Soldier Fly posts on the vermicomposting forum which are off-topic posts.

Once you get the forms filled out, the proper thing to do with them is to toss them into the compost.

Lloyd the forms are not for you to fill out! They are for ths BSFL to fill out. You know, important information like.

1. Date you hatched.
2. Address,and if current residence has more than 1 compost pile state which one you live in.
3. Where do you see yourself in the next several months. Choose one of the following.
A.I plan to lay dormant here until the weather warms.
B.I will be leaving soon to infest another compost pile.

Now to stay OT a quick search here for Black Soldier Fly should give you enough info to keep you reading for a long time unless they have deleted the threads.

I also put this post on the vermicomposting forum, and they like the idea. People on the vermicomposting forum would like a Black Soldier Fly/PHOENIX worm forum. So those people who just compost and don't compost with worms canÂt get through their heads about having a forum for Black Soldier Fly/PHOENIX worms.

Obviously pt03(Lloyd) and bill13286 you don't raise worms or make compost for that matter, because there are many bugs and grubs that feed in the compost piles and are good fertilizer which you would find in your compost pile. Like cricket fertilizer is a good high Nitrogen compost that can have a compost ready in half the time it would to compost in a compost bin. Also how the house fly larvae feed on meat and dairy (cheese) and turn the waste into a smaller source that can be broken down. Plus, Black Soldier Fly/PHOENIX worm, cricket, and house fly larvae can be used to feed pets, fish bait, used as bird feed, and more uses that I will not name.

So then why is there no Grub forum; cricket form, mealworm form, house fly, and etc.?

I think a vermicoposting section on the forum is enough. Because that's what it is and where such discussions are meant to take place. You don't want to subcategorize things too much.

The vermicomposting forum clearly states: This forum is meant for the discussion of vermicomposting and vermiculture--the raising of earth worms for the creation of a healthy soil. (Raising of earth worms) NOT (raising Black Soldier Fly/PHOENIX worm) so there needs to be another form for Black Soldier Fly/PHOENIX worm or they need to change to vermicomposting forum discussion topic then.

I think its such a specialty that there wouldn't be very many posts on the forum...perhaps BSF larvae enthusiasts could start their own web forum.

IMHO GardenWeb could consolidate some of the forums that it already has - I have been reading many of the garden related threads here for a while and know that there are threads started in some pretty obscure (rarely traveled) forms that could easily spark discussion or be answered in a more viewed forum

I would think that your questions or concerns about Black Soldier Flies could be covered in this forum (the Soil, Compost, and Mulch Forum) - or perhaps the Vermicomposting Forum could be changed into the Macroorganismcomposting Forum - but then that could lead to more off topic posts in that form about the composting of entire farm animals - which would really belong in this forum... There may not be an easy answer to this one. Put me down as probably a maybe.

I couldn't agree more. I've looked around on some of the other forums here at GardenWeb and it's surprising how many of them have very little activity. I think one dedicated to "raising Black Soldier Fly/PHOENIX worm" would probably be the same way.

On the other hand - if someone REALLY wanted to try and get one started...this would not be the right venue anyway. Instead of trying to convince other members (who have no say in the matter), they should run it past the admins (gods) of this site. I couldn't even get an acknowledgment on a request I made so last year so I say more power to whomever tries.

In the HOUSE?? Oh gosh NO!

We keep our windows open at night when the crickets sing in August and although their songs put us to sleep, one made it's way into the basement this year. At 3am, DH decides he can no longer take it's chirp and in the maddness of trying to find this creature, he woke everyone up with his banging and choice words. After an hour of this, he finally capitulated and came back to bed.

Two hours later the cat showed up in our bed with the singing creature still alive in it's mouth... The cat nearly died by my hands. The cricket got away and kept us awake until the alarm rang.

When we returned home after a day's work, the cricket was nowhere to be seen or heard. We think the cat finally did was it was intended to do. :O)

Isn't it funny how crickets through an open window in summer at night sound so pleasant but in the basement....they're just annoying as heck! Been there...done that.

Some here might say that BSFL in your compost means that something is wrong with the pile. I frequently provide the perfect conditions for BSFL by dumping a 5 gallon bucket of kitchen scraps in my pile. It don't take long for the BSF's to find it.

Forestelves - you'll be delighted to know that there are plenty of cricket forums (fora?) over here ... in fact lots of people tune into the cricket news whenever they can. We also take an interest in all sorts of grub ... this time of year mainly turkey and mince pies.

Here's an idea for which we are obviously qualified ... how about a separate forUm to solve world peace....or what happens to lost socks .... or you know, something really important .... though soldier flies certainly is up there for subjects I will gladly put at the bottom of my 'to-do' list.

Advertising gives us a free forum. Cost of doing business and if one doesn't like the ads, there are other forums.

Proofreading and the "preview message" can catch most errors and those that are missed, usually aren't all that serious and can be downright funny sometimes.

Off topic posts can add life and humour to an otherwise tedious subject and is often called, "having a conversation".

GW's SC&M is probably one of the most popular focused forums there is. The number of posts and speed at which the pages advance is proof of that.

If one checks out the member page of the OP, one will find he is no longer with us. Seems he/she went a little, um, overboard, shall we say. Some other multiple personalities were also deleted that may or may not have been related.

I agree, no apology was necessary.

I have never checked out all of the forums, but if you ever want to see a REALLY fast moving forum, check out the Kitchen forum. It is 11am EST Sunday 2-28-10 and already posts from this morning are halfway through page 2. Falling off the end of page 67 are posts from just a little over 1 month ago, and so posts from Jan 20 will shortly never be seen again. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/kitchbath/ A new task for me ... I think I will make it a point to visit EVERY forum on gardenweb one day just to see what is going on out there. Lots of interesting stuff, I am sure.

I do believe my muscles were tensed the whole time I was reading this page! eek!

Anyway, to go back to the hilarious cricket mishap, I unfortunately have them all the time... I found myself with three "rescued" toads a few years back. The were basically on death row, and not able to be released. So me, being the animal lover, had to take them in.

And they eat crickets... That means I have to buy them by the dozen, sometimes two or three dozen. And I ALWAYS get a couple males in there that chirp ALL night. I feel badly, but I've had to flush them down the toilet before. They'll drive you nuts!
