Are 'Wood' ash and 'Pellet' ash the same thing?
Comments (1)If there are documented differences, I'm not finding them. The suggestion for both wood ash and pellet ash for additional phosphorus and potassium is 1 to 2 #s per 100 square feet once per year. Five pounds of wood ash can raise soil pH in a 100 square foot plot by approx. half a point. (soil that is too alkaline may impede plant growth)...See More12/5/15: rooting roses & best soil, wood ash, foods to lose weight
Comments (53)Merry Christmas !! I had just ordered Smart-pot in 10 gallon, only $9.97 from Amazon (free shipping). I'll buy 3 blueberry bushes this spring (Walmart sells them), put 2 in SmartPot, and 1 in the ground. Didn't know that I need 2 or more blueberry bushes to pollinate each other. Info. from About.com: " Fertilizing blueberries - Blueberries don’t like too much fertilizer. Twice a year in the early spring works well. For organic fertilizer try blood or cottonseed meal, or a fertilizer designed for acid loving plants. Blueberries need friends – To get your blueberries to fruit, you will need at least two blueberry plants for pollination, three plants is even better and they need to be placed relatively close together. Also it’s a good idea to grow a couple of different varieties of blueberries, because they will produce fruit at different times and extending your blueberry season. Protect your blueberries – While growing blueberries you’ll have few pests to worry about other than birds. To protect your fruit from feathered poachers, you can cover your bushes with a light sheet or netting, a few weeks before the berries are ripe." Sam: Do you protect your blueberries from birds? If I put Smart-pot right next to the patio, hopefully there's less pests. I re-post the info. that Bluegirl wrote on pine-fines to buy from Lowe's. I would need 1/4 pine fines with 3/4 potting soil to create the acidic soil for blueberries. Bluegirl in Texas wrote: "I think Amazon has the sulfate of potash for ~ $11 still. See if your Lowes carries the mix ours does. It's "HapiGro Landscape Mix", sold in a big clear bag for about four dollars. Almost pure pine fines to look at it. Here are some photos, the bag is kind of faded, it's a mostly clear bag with white on front. dry stuff inside--looks to be mostly fine pine bark with a nugget or two of perlite. THis is some moist stuff from inside a bucket--finger for size. Pictures & info. above are from Bluegirl in Texas. THANK YOU, Bluegirl, for allowing me to post your info....See MoreWood ash around rhodies
Comments (6)pH is an exponential function ... i doubt a little ash made any significant change in such ... unless he is one of those insane smoker dudes.. that have smokers on wheels and actual drag this huge machine with him.. where ever he goes ... lol ... but of course.. the testing is the way to go ... when you took the soil sample.. i hope you got down a few inches.. and didnt just test the surface ... what i wonder about.. is if he threw them under there.. still hot ... that might burn or heat the surface roots .. injure the roots .... where are you.. big city name .... was winter anything out of the ordinary.. including very mild ... sometimes you get damage in milder winters.. than you do i what you think are bad winters .... you might also consider ... that with 20 year old plants.. the important feeder roots... might not be all that close to the trunks ... i dont know about your comparison of a canna background to shrubs .... other than it is good to know.. you arent a total newb to horticulture ... im wondering.. also .. if you might not be a bit hypersensitive to finding problems .. now that you have found this .... i always like to err on the side of seeing what how it develops.. rather than over reacting and trying to love something to death ... to be clear.. you are on the right path ... testing ... but we are not dealing with annuals or perennials... that have a much shorter life cycle ... this is where i ask you for a few pix.. and when you load them ... the plants are obviously in bad shape.. and all my presumptions are moot ... lol.. could you favor us with with such??? ken...See MoreWood Ash as a Fungicide
Comments (7)Wood ash + water + time = lye. BE CAREFUL. I'd consider dusting it on to see if it helps on a trial area. And let us know! We have an organic commercial farm with lots of hobby endeavors, and a wood stove. Years ago I learned of an old timers trick of putting wood ash around the base of fruit tree trunks, especially young ones. i would think this deters pests at the trunk, especially rodents and borers, as well as insects that might crawl up the trunk. I try to do this with many of our fruiting things. I also claculated and mixed up a big batch of fertilizer this year, with lots of wood ash. We had too many experiments to say definitively but our garden is gangbusters....See Moregreenmulberry
