Ebb Tide Gush

I just wanted to post about how utterly happy/joyful/ecstatic I am about my Ebb Tide Rose. I planted it Late December 2012. It started blooming February 2013 and hasn't stopped! The scent has only grown richer as the summer progresses. The dark purple does not fade in the sun and the scent lasts until the last of the petals fall. I only prune when the last bloom is gone on the floribunda cluster. a new cluster will rebloom within 2 weeks. I have never had less than three clusters blooming at a time. I shovel pruned a rose this summer and will definitely replace it with another Ebb Tide this December.

i wish i could figure out how to get a picture posted. Will have to have the kids help me with that ...

So sorry about the gush, my hubby just rolls his eyes now when I talk about Ebb Tide. His favorite is Mr. Lincoln...

I'm delighted for you. It's a lovely feeling when you fall in love with a rose. Especially when its a strong performer. You get that tiny rush if pleasure every time you see/smell/walk near it.

roselover: Would you pay the shipping on another Ebb Tide? I have one I think I'll be taking out and replacing with something else. The first year mine bloomed and bloomed and the second year hardly anything. I've sprayed and watered and fertilized, still nothing. It's gotta go!!. Pembroke

Straw and Sam - How much rain are you getting, and what are your highest temps now - that yesterday was summer solstice for you? Rose, the spots have spread, to Dr. Grill which is in a pot next to Ebb Tide. No leaves have fallen, however. Paul, I am in awe of your expertise (and your roses!), and so I am thrilled to have your input. The thing is, I have sprayed with fungicide within the past two weeks — and the two weeks before that. I use either Rose Rx or Captain Jack’s Dead Bug. As neither of these have proven effective against thrips, however, I wonder about their efficacy overall. I have so few roses these days that I can walk around and wash or rub the thrips off when I see them — but the spray didn’t work on them, so maybe they are useless as fungicides as well. Should I try neem oil? I have some of that on hand. How far about should potted roses be from each other? I have them clustered together for purposes of drip watering - but that could change. Here is a picture: Dr. Grill is on the left (against the trellis). Ebb Tide is in the center - you can see the spots in the foreground. Winter Sun is on the right - no spots there. Also, the spots are affecting only a small portion of Ebb Tide. The rest of it appears very healthy, including the newest growth in the left foreground. Oursteelers, we have very hot, dry summers--not sure where you're located, but I'll wager it's hotter here east of the Cascades in desert, than PNW where you live. I have three Ebb Tide roses, and they do fine, though, I agree, they can fade and do some frying in the heat, but lots of other roses do some frying in this garden. Evelyn does not fry, nor does Augusta Luise. But the dark roses do burn more easily, the worst being The Prince. Twilight Zone is best here of the purples, and Munstead Wood is good, as far as dark reds go. Ingrid, judging from the Evelyn bouquets I've made today against the blooms currently on Eglantyne, it's no contest. Evelyn is much more beautiful, I think, and smells even better, though Eglantyne has a lovely scent. Eglantyne does not hold up in the heat as well as Evie, and her blooms are smaller. I've grown Eglantyne in two locations from the time she first was introduced in the 1990s, I rarely use Eglantyne in bouquets because she doesn't hold up well. This is just my personal opinion, and I know others may disagree. I hope I haven't offended fans of Eglantyne. This rose is indeed lovely, but not my favorite by a long shot. Diane

Back in CT Ebb Tide was very weak and not worth it but I tried it here in Pasadena and after a seemingly good start it went into a funk. I pulled it out and potted it really good and have been feeding it and making sure it gets just the right amount of water and sun and it is doing fine. The blooms are spectacular so it is definitely going back into the perennial garden (replacing Europeana which has been consumed by powdery mildew).

No thankyou for the ebb tide. I am pretty picky when it comes to my shopping. I appreciate the thought though. :)

Hopefully mine will continue to flourish!

Love Ebb Tide too! That smell is great and it is very healthy for me!

For those of you having trouble with Ebb Tide (I have three and they certainly have their issues), consider Twilight Zone, an offspring of Ebb Tide, and I think a much better rose, especially if you live in a hot, sunny area. TZ's blooms don't fade to murky pinks and other off colors for me. Diane
