@summersrhythm_z6a, here is Peggy Martin that I gave to my friend growing on his new fence that we built last year. It's already swirling around the swags. Last Oct. After it had been transplanted during mid-Summer. We transplanted another this spring so it is a little behind. These were growing at my house in total shade where they would get a great spring flush and put on wonderful growth but not much after that. Here's a picture of them from my house. floridarose : its just one plant. Initially i thought of planting a second one on the other side of the arbor but i thought it may be too much for the arbor to take. It roots very easily. i actually got a cutting from a nearby day lily farm. I had gone to see their dayliies and saw this rose on the owners fence and started talking to him about it. He was so generous that he gave me a big cutting to try out. I made quite a few,can't recollect how many but 3 made it. The owner told me a different name but said its beeing called Peggy Martin now.

There is a difference between climbers and ramblers which will affect how and when you prune. As I am not familiar with PM, I cannot help on this one.....but, as a rule, ramblers which bloom on older wood also tend to throw canes from the base...and therefore need pruning after flowering so new wood can ripen for the following season. Climbers, on the other hand, will produce laterals which will often (not always) bloom on new seasons wood...and require the usual spring pruning to keep in shape and health. Vigorous laterals can be swapped about easily, removing gnarly ones and tying newer greener canes in their place. Even so, I would hold off on any pruning as your rose is still young and developing - it has no trouble producing blooms on upright canes that I can see, so wait another season or two and just observe the sort of growth patterns you are getting.

I'll admit Peggy M doesn't make anyone gasp at the beauty of the blooms, but I would suggest it has a place, not in every garden, but in enough that it's a valuable rose. We know it can survive just about anything and it's the best short fence climber I've ever seen. I think it would be beautiful covering the side of an out building or provide shade on a porch. She doesn't require pruning to bloom, and that is a plus for such a big climbing shrub. And, for those of us in cold zones, she's a pretty decent option. Some of the Canadian roses we depend on, like Wm. Baffin, don't have to-die-for gorgeous blooms, but they provide a massive wall of color. While the individual blooms are not exceptional, the entire bush as a whole is breathtaking. See Garden nut's photo for it's covering ability. It's all so personal and that makes our gardens personal as they should be.
